Hi everyone, please help me.
I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.
Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.
That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.
However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.
I already have my bachelors degree here.
When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?
After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?
Thank you!
Rissem, Does a community nurse count as experience? or does it have to be in hospital? could you tell me how long it took your registration in victoria ? Still dont know what to do
it will count as long you worked in a registered capacity...in fact the australian government encouraged nurses to work in a remote and rural area, sometimes they give incentives to those willing to work in such places...so i think if you got a community nursing experience they would really appreciate that...and again, if you work in a registered capacity (RN), that's counted...
about the appplication: normally in victoria, it would take 4-6 weeks(according to their website and NBV personnel, for your papers to be processed or assessed), but mine was two months (by the way, the processing or assessment is done individually), and the usual outcome of it for overseas nurses, is that you have to take a bridging course they call it "Initial Registration Program for Overseas Qualified Nurses" for three months, but again it vary from case to case basis, since every applicant is going to be assessed individually.
PS: i am not a registered nurse in victoria yet...but they are done in processing my papers, and i have to take the three-month bridging course.
:nuke:
rissem, does being a community health nurse count as experience or do i need to get into a hospital ? Im thinking of going to victoria..i said i would give 2 weeks to think about and still banging my head if queensland or victoria..how did you people manage to choose ?
yes its countec as long as you are a registered nurse when you were working in the community...
i got that same situation before, my application in victoria has been approved and i have to take the bridging course, but knowing that its too dear to have it in victoria, i decided to apply in queensland. and once registered in queensland, it would be easier to register in victoria.
thanks everyone! hey aelith when are you going to Australia?i have friends in melbourne who just finished the bridging course. they told me its not really easy to look for a sponsor esp. if you have no hospital experience. is that true? they said that its the hospital that sponsors the most. they are now worried that they may not be able to find a job before their visas expire and that all their effort and expenses may have just been in vain. well, that kinda puts everything in perspective. i thought everything would follow after the bridging course... so i guess we really have to plan this well.this makes me worrie also... a lot!!!

Hopefully, if all goes well, next year.
Well, to be honest, I wouldn't really say that it is relatively easy to find a sponsor there especially when you are inexperienced. I have been trying to find one for the past couple of months because I was hoping I could give something for those who are going on their own. But, what I found was agencies and hospitals willing to employ inexperienced overseas nurses as long as they have the working visa done - which simply means, they can give you a position as long as you have the visa that will enable you to work. That is the biggest problem.
I know that going for an agency would cost an arm and leg for a lot and I understand why most would go DIY with their application but it is sort of the key for you to land a job there without much hassle. I really don't want to give any high hopes for anyone so I'm trying to be more realistic with things. It also depend on which state you apply to. Some states may have some hospitals or agencies willing to sponsor an inexperienced overseas nurse - but to conclude which state is a better choice, I cannot say for sure.
This is not to say too, that there is no hope for you to find a sponsor once there, but this is merely to help you carefully plan for what's ahead. Everyone should always have a plan B just in case things don't go the way they should.
I have but one suggestion to your friends if they like, I have been talking to one agency's Director (I think), and he assured me that even if I go on a different path, that he will still be able to help me find a job once there should I need it. I will give you the contact and hopefully he can help your friends. I am not sure if it will be the same for your friends but I hope he could still help them. :) I'm pretty sure that would not be a free service but maybe your friends could arrange a sort of payment for him - maybe installment or a certain cut from the wages.
Goodluck! Update me okay?

Actually this worries me a lot too. Even before I lodged my application with QNC i've been thinking about this. If you happen to see my earlier posts you would see that i always ask people around if they already found agencies that are willing to sponsor inexperienced nurses.
Anyway, may i ask if those friends of yours are looking for work in a hospital setting or in nursing homes?
I think it's really hard to find sponsors if we want to work in a hospital but i guess with nursing homes we still stand a chance.
I just hope they can find work before their visa expires. And please update us if your friends managed to find work. Thanks!
Hello everyone,
Thanks Hotpotato101, my cousin insisted that I must take the IELTS so that there won't be any problems later on.. since i don't have a choice i have to study hard for the IELTS again.. Actually I am a retaker, i took the IELTS two-years ago for my visascreen certificate, due to the retrogression in the US I decided to look for another country to try my luck and came across this forum. My IELTS result expired last august 12, 2008. I had an OB of 7.0 but my reading band was 6.0..
Hotpotato101, all you need to do for the writing part of the IELTS is to read a lot and be sure to follow the right format in making an essay.. Introduction, Body, and conclusion.. don't begin your sentences with but and with and.. try moreover, in addition, furthermore and However.. try to familiarize yourself with the current issues these days like global warming, information technology, international travel..etc..because the questions in the IELTS are being used more than once but they would re-phrase it to have a different approach on the examinees.. Try to practice a lot you really need that to have a 7.0 band in the writing part.. God bless!!
hello,I'm new to this site. I'm also interested in studying at Curtin University in Perth,WA. I've already submitted the application form for initial registration and other required documents to the Nurses and Midwives Board Of WA about 2 days ago.
I would like to ask where I can download the application form for the RN DEGREE CONVERSION PROGRAM because i cannot find it at their website http://www.nursingandmidwifery.curtin.edu.au. Also I would liketo ask for your advice on what to do next. I want to lodge my application now because my IELTS will expire 2009 Dec.
thanks.
