New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

World Immigration

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Maybe WA should become its own country, sorta like Canada and the US of A.

Good call! Hope they stick to their guns then.

I still can't find anything about WA rejecting the NRAS. All I saw was the issue of PM Gillard and Health Minister Roxon about Abott's $1.5bn proposal. It has nothing to do with WA rejecting anything. It's also worth noting that WA is indeed an active participant to the NRAS. This is just me but I refuse to label, brand or discriminate a whole demographic as having a certain "mentality".

There is even a published Newsletter from the WA Transition Manager for the NRAS

found here.

Just my :twocents:

What the!!!!!

Talk about shut down, well ok...

Contrary to what you said before editing your post, I am researching it.

You: "Its the Australian Practitioner Health Board of Australia.....APHRA, that Western Australia has yet to pass the law so that they may join."

I'm sorry but the law is named "Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (WA) Bill 2010" which is, at this time of writing, under the second reading at parliament. It is also AHPRA, not APHRA.

Exactly my point that the only current health issue I could find has nothing to do with Western Australia rejecting the NRAS (National Registration and Accreditation Scheme). Forgive me for you telling me about my ignorance of "Australian Humor" or having "no idea about Australian History" (like what you said before editing your post). I was under the assumption that you were joining a discussion by responding to terdjay pointing out of the news of WA rejecting the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme and that it was "all over the news and internet" as he stated on the previous pages. I'm not patronizing you if that's what you are saying (again, before editing your post). I even gave a kudos to your post before replying to it.

Oh and regarding using abbreviations for just about anything as you asserted, I didn't make it up. The Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council coined it and is used by the various agencies concerned.

I don't mean to be a smart alec but a lot of people are reading this thread and I could not even begin to fathom the value of the information they gather from here, myself included. This is why I have taken it upon myself to at least give something back to this thread, researching as much as possible and answering questions as close to the truth as I can. If you notice, some of my post even have supporting links.

I do hope that the tenor of this thread would not change. Considering the reaction I got, I believe that I would have to return to "lurking mode" and instead dish out advice in private messages and apologize to you, cerdywn and terdjay. God bless you all and all the best to us. :)

Those who are sending me their essays to be checked may still do. You know my email and I'd still be glad to give comments and suggestions about it. Much :redbeathe -John

does it really take that long for NBV to send the letters? I'm a littlt bit worried, I mailed my application for the IRON last April... I emailed them around May and they said that my letter has is at the registrar's office waitng for the signature and will be mailed to me shortly... its July but I got no mail yet.... Does it really take that long?

Relax. What's impt here is that wa will be joining ahpra soon.

Wa always likes to be pressured since time immemorial that's why it's always last when it comes to everything national. This is a known fact and all of us wa residents are aware of it. Look at the extended trading scheme, the proposed soccer stadium in burswood, and many many more. Wa is full of politics, slow, outback thinking and very bureaucratic. That's why it's lagging behind. (a result of perth being an isolated city?)

Ironically, wa is the richest state and plays a key role in Australia.

The state of the art Stanley Fiona will be operational by 2014 so hopefully a lot of nurses will be hired.

Its already July 1, 2010, and im already an Australia-wide Registered Nurse, not only a Victorian Nurse..hehe LOL

@cioman, whats APHRA? dont they have an email address? whats their number, i will try to ring them once ive got a time...:)

By the way guys and goyettes :D try contacting this agency, they are sponsoring overseas nurses who are worth spnsoring (hahaha..just kidding)..yeah try to contact them and maybe they can help you...their website is mediserve.com.au and have a read through their website,if they are willing to sponsor you they will be the one who will pay for your visa expenses among others:up:...and im currently working for them as agency nurse as well as my friend:)

sorry i mean AHPRA.. they have email address.. i would like to have the landline number instead of that toll free number which we in the philippines could not contact..

mediserve has high standards with regards to experience requirements, when i checked it years ago, they required 2 years experience, but for other members here pls try to check them now perhaps they changed their previous policy regarding 2 years experience.. i do agree that they sponsor nurses, and this mediserve is a nursing agency (not just a recruitment agency)..

thanks ryan, hope you could help us with regards to that landline number..

Thanks for your inputs, cioman! I'm considering the bridging program since it's more economical and less time consuming. However, with the national registration in effect, I'm presuming the processing time for the board to review one's credentials will take longer as well. Would you know how long it takes on average for the then-independent state boards to grant eligibility?

I'm a second courser, so I'm kinda rushing things. I wish to go to Oz by the beginning of next year, be it by conversion (just awaiting for offers) or BP (haven't started any move in this path!). However, conditional offers granted by universities can't be put off for a long time (say, if I start processing my BP and had to wait for the eligibility and then securing a slot for the program) since slots for the conversion also fill up easily.

Gosh, I'm really confused! Do you reckon if I start processing my papers now for the BP path I'd be able to get my eligibility within the year?

hello,

- AHPRA would be a bit busy now, i dont know exactly how long they would finally be able to cope up, but my best guess would be either by the end of July or August their workload would normalize already..

- I suggest you read the AHPRA website and check the requirements for registration.. then for now, prepare those requirments and documents needed..

- I assume you want to be in Melbourne? Right? In that case, after you finish preparing the req.and docus, you send your application to AHPRA Victoria..

- They will evaluate your application within 90 days (this is their target processing time).. After getting your approval, then start hunting for a slot for your BP, which i dont know how long or what because it will depend on the slot availability and the schedule of the BP..

HOpe this helps.. again, read the AHPRA website.. good luck..

P.s. im a second courser too, welcome to the club..

oh thanks, cioman. I will try to call NBV's numbers tomorrow. and btw, yes im still here in the phil. Ill give it a try for AHPRA's too, but more likely, just like what youve said, wont work. anyway, hope we can figure out what numbers should we be calling soon.

mikyong, hope you could update or share me about how to contact them landline.. thanks.. goodl luck to us..

Keep it going mate. Your posts are very helpful as they are highly accurate. You will be doing a great favor to active members, lurkers and guests who want find information regarding the RN OZ dream. This thread has a wealth of information but unfortunately it also has a lot of misinformation.

The possibility of being misinformed increases when some people would state opinions and make them appear as facts. It would be nice if we all can state facts as facts and opinions as opinions as there are some who have difficulty in discriminating one from the other. There is a saying that goes--- When asking for directions, if you ask at least three people then you will most likely get there. Your posts could serve as a direction from one of the three people.

Thank you for sincerely trying to help others in this thread by doing thorough research. People like you make this thread nice and beautiful.:yeah:

People who correct each other is what makes this thread beautiful and interesting bec it only proves that there's a system of check and balance in place. It's democracy at work. Why overreact in the first place. Chillax, go research and post your known infos here so other forumers can post their comments, questions, suggestions, corrections, opinions and whatever they like

Btw, wa being full of politics, slow, outback thinking and very bureaucratic is not an opinion. It's a fact. And it's a social issue for us residents. Coz we're severely affected.

But anyway, you people from other states and countries don't care anyway. So why bother.

Good luck to everyone dreaming to be an aus nurse.
