New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Just to update you guys after the long wait i finally received the letter from QNC. and like my friend, they're asking for a proof that i am 'fit to practice'. anyway i just need to provide a statutory declaration about this and i'm off to the next step. :yeah:

Here's my timeline:

August 14 - pass my application to QNC via speedpost (Singapore-Australia)

August 19 - received acknowledgment letter from QNC

October 22 - confirmation letter. Must provide: IELTS, Stat. Declaration.

will do the statutory declaration tonight.

hi nursemavi, i forgot that you are from davao city like me (rationale: to establish rapport).. just want to ask somethings and clarifications:

  • In davao city, there is only one doctor in Davao Doc Hosp who is accredited by australian embassy for the medicals.. so for visa/embassy purposes, the total cost is only P2,800 ?? ..i thought it runs around P6t-P8t.. Since the visa is Temporary Stay only (visa 456), Dr. Mansukhani of Dvo Doctors Hospital charges P2,849.00
  • Australian hospitals require nurses to have been vaccinated or immunized by certain diseases which are listed in their website. How did you meet this requirement? Did you obtain a doctor's certification that indeed you are immunized by such diseases? Or did you undertake a serum tests which proves you are immunized? Since I will be applying for Visa 456, there is no need for me to present my immunization records. This is only required if one will obtain a student visa or permanent visa or visa 457. However, I will present a MRSA test as this is required.
  • Your plane fare is very very cheap ha!! good for you.. any advice please how you get such inexpensive ticket? You are right. I am flying from Davao to Singapore via CebuPacific and will take Taiger Airways from Singapore to Perth. The return flight takes the same route.
  • I assume you did not go through an agency, so you processed your application yourself.. Who processed your visa application in manila? I'm wondering because i did not see any visa processing expenses in your posts above (although you mentioned Aud$100). If somebody or an travelling/immigration agency processed it, how much is the processing fee? I am processing it myself since one can apply via courier.
  • Who arranged your room accommodation in australia? Do you have relatives there or does the Hollywood hospital have accommodation which you could rent? I believe finding room accommodation is one of the major obstacles of applicants who process their papers on their own (unlike those hooked with agencies, which have ready room accommodation as part of the deal). Any advice please.. I have no relative in Perth but I have acquaintances who are currently taking the Bridging Program in Hollywood Hospital and Royal Perth Hospital. I will ask for their help. Worst case would make me end in a hostel for a week when I arrive there and look for a shared accommodation during the 1st week.
  • Just wanna be sure, so your monthly budget for rental, food and transpo, etc. is Aus$1,000, which means $250 per week(plus 25% allowance).. Is this enough already? Pardon my being makulit. One can find a shared accommodation ranging from 80-150/week and food can cost from 50-100/week. A friend who is currently taking the bridging program at Royal Perth hospital spends AUD150/week which covers housing and food(parang board and lodging ang nakuha niya) while another acquiantance is having a bridging program at HPH and has found a place to stay at AUD80/week(walking distance to the hospital). So my 1,000/month is inclusing of the 25% allowance.
  • Do you have personal health/accident insurance during your stay in australia? How much is the premium and where/how did you acquire it? I did not include this as I am a dependent of my husband who has an international health insurance coverage as part of his non monetary benefit.
  • Do you have personal/professional indemnity coverage during your clinical duty in australia? How much is the premium and where/how did you acquire it? I will get this as soon as I am able to get a paid job in OZ. As a clinical trainee, I don't need to get this yet.
  • You have a return flight ticket. As what you know, after passing your training and a hospital will hire and visa sponsor/nominate you, how long is the processing of your existing visa converted to working visa? 3 months from day of application for conversion/nomination? 2 weeks? what's your idea on this?I really need to have a return ticket as the immigration officer will look for this as I applied for a temporary visa which would necessitate me to return after the three month period stated in the visa. However, this visa can be converted to visa 457(working visa) if one finds a sponsor. One can also look for a sponsor while the bridging program is ongoing so that the visa 457 can be filed simulatan eously and a bridging visa can be issued which would allow staying in OZ beyond the expiry of VISA 456. After the BP, registration can be obltained in a week's time.

Nursemavi of Davao :), i hope you would answer my queries. It means a lot to me.. There are many things that i know about the processes in going to Australia but somethings i just don't know or sure of, like those queries above..

Later when you are there, please share to us how easy or difficult the Bridging Program is, at least other members will have an idea and be intellectually prepared so that they will not be compliance (hindi kumpyansa bah). Ms. Jillian Thomson, training coordinator of HPH,sent me a note via email that she will send advance notes to be studied prior to flying to Perth. I will visit the forum and provide feedback on the bridging program proper when I take the program by Jan. 2009.

Thank you so much.. hope to hear from you..

Have you applied already?

Good luck and God bless.

Just for clarification:

One cannot apply for a 457 visa unless one is already a skilled worker. For the nurses' case, we will have to finish the bridging course and be registered first before we can apply for it. But we are allowed to apply for the 457 whilst in Australia under a different substantive visa (e.g. 456). And you will be given a corresponding bridging visa for you to legally stay in Australia. ;) However, should you plan to go back to Philippines while your visa is being processed, you will have to apply for Bridging Visa B so you can go in and out of Australia.

Initially, that was what I thought. However, this was corrected by a Registered Migration Agent.

I have also corresponded with a South African nurse who was sponsored by St John Hospital in Subiaco under Visa 457 and she was given the said visa prior to her bridging program course. She flew to Perth with her family on a Visa 457 and took the BP course upon her arrival in Perth. Thus, when she went there, she was not yet a WA registered nurse but she and her dependents were already granted VISA 457.

Anyway, I will post a query on this topic to Westly Russel,RMA to clarify facts. I will just post whatever info I will be able to extract from him.

Good day and God bless.

keep us posted nursemavi. ;)

by the way, latest news i've found out:

govt urged to roll back 457 visa scheme

october 23, 2008 - 8:33pm

source: abc

the federal government is under pressure to scale back australia's skilled migration scheme amid fears of rising unemployment.

economists from national australia bank predict unemployment could rise to 6 per cent next year as the global financial crisis deepens.

dave robinson from unions wa wants the commonwealth to strengthen the 457 scheme to guarantee the jobs of local workers.

migrant intake may be smaller: govt

[color=maroon]22 october, 2008

australia's intake of migrants is likely to be smaller next year as a result of the global financial crisis, the federal government says.

immigration minister chris evans said the intake was closely linked to the state of the economy and the demand for labour.

"if there is a drop in demand for skills and labour in the economy, you would expect that you would run a smaller migration program," the minister told a senate estimates hearing.

"i'd envisage certainly that the migration program for next year would be smaller than this year."

thanks silverdragon for editing ;)

by the way, i just received an update from sawsee that i am sure will make it easier for those applying:

here is an update for you, the loans will be deferred until you start working as rn, not whilst you are training on bridging course, hope this is useful to you

finance for the bridging course for successful applicants. it is at australian bank rates and you repay the loan ,when you start working as an rn. salary usually starts at $1000 per week.

This is a bit odd...

Responding to another question you raised.

No one can come as a nurse on a 457 until they have registration in Australia.

That one came from a migration agent too - just got his answer now. I wonder why they have different views on this... maybe we should consult another migration agent to be sure. :zzzzz

I've read about that SA's story in the same forum, was she sponsored as a nurse or as a different one? Or maybe if coupled with extensive experience it will be possible? >.

Hi Aelith do you know if Sawsee also offers job placement for nurses who successfully complete the program?

keep us posted nursemavi. ;)

gosh that's bad news. we're gathering our documents for migration visa now and probably it will take us until next year before we can lodge it to diac. sad. :crying2:

Yea I think they are cause they did mention that they have arrangements for that after you get your registration. The only thing tho is they require 12 months experience. But he also told me that they are currently looking for ways for the inexperienced ones. I will update you with whatever he will tell me eventually.
