New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Hi again, I hope that my answer were a little help, I have again spoken with sawsee, and as he is not a member of this site, he has said he would welcome the chance to arrange an orientation for Nurse that would be interested in learning more, not necessarily interested in training with his company, he would welcome the chance to arrange something for all of you, to learn from him so you can look else where or just be armed with new information, and he will if time is possible have Clinica sit in on the conversation online at his office, if this is of interest he has welcomed anyone wanting to know more and correct him if he is wrong 11.30am Thursday 30th october in their quezon city offices, I hope this will help anyone, like most of you i would like to help as much as i can

thank maria for the clarifications and good luck..:)

btw, Sawsee/Clinica require applicants to have at least 12 months of hospital experience to be able to qualify of their offer. (am i right?)

I'm afraid there's no other way but to wait for the certificate. It's a requirement that you need to fulfill. Your PRC ID will not suffice for the certifcate. You may inquire from PRC if they can expedite this for you but I doubt if they could because there is no service like that. You may try.

I recommend that you contact your school about this. You must have a record of your commencement and graduation dates. Your graduation date should coincide with the date on your diploma. Though in reality, we graduate at a later time. But you should write what's on your diploma. The registrar has a record on your commencement date. Better ask them.

For the statutory declaration, you may copy the declaration on the form but you have to state that you don't have nursing experience from the time you graduate. You have to express that you are competent even without experience. Anyway, you just graduated Dec.2007. Oh my, I hate PRC. They are delaying things for the nurses.

Thank you Kit25.. i guess i have to wait a bit longer ei.. i graduated march 2007, passed the December 2007.. registered April 30, 2008.. claimed my PRC License on Oct. 21, 2008.. Will wait for the Cert. of Reg. next year 2009..:sniff: Nonetheless, i will try to find ways to ask agencies if they have "documentary" ways to address my situation, similar to that "statutory document" for nurses with no experience.. i just hope there is indeed a way for this:specs:, otherwise, cry baby cry :scrying:

Yes, from the list I gave before, there are several there who sponsors. Even public hospitals do sponsor overseas nurses. You can also check with the health government websites of each state as they are actively hiring overseas nurses. I will have a look at the websites and post here tomorrow. For now I'll just go rest. ;) I'll update you tomorrow. :)

Oops wait... did you just say bridging program? That is different.. when you say sponsor, it means sponsor you for the visa. You will have to finance your bridging program and be registered first. But for the employment part, Yes, there are hospitals that will sponsor you. Although, there are a few who might sponsor the whole bridging program. The ones in WA I think will be able to give a refund I think.

good it's clarified.. indeed, many agencies and institution are willing to "sponsor" you, meaning, it is assumed you already are a registered nurse in australia.. thus, they sponsor your for your working visa, and perhaps other expenses and initial housing accommodation.. :specs:

Other expenses and initial housing accommodation can be arranged with your employer. Some do offer help on initial relocation costs. But the main thing that everyone has to accomplish first is the registration - which is the hardest part of it all.

Here's the list of expenses I spent/estimated to be spent for this endeavor.

PRC Cert of Good Standing P75.00

mailing to Perth via EMS 970.00

cost of certifying docs 800.00

mailing to Perth via FEDEX 1,370.00

Assessment fee to NMBWA 8,404.00(AUD220.00)

mailing to Hollywood Hosp 1,350.00

Tuition AUD880.00 @ 35 30,800.00

return ticket SIN-PERTH-SIN 20,128.00

1 way ticket dvo-sin 6,600.00

cost of living/month AUD1k/MONTH inc allowance

105,000.00 (3 MONTHS)

est total expenses P175,497.00

I have allotted a 25% allowance on my cost of living allowance. Visa costs only AUD100 which I fail to include and medicals which cost at P2,800 here in Davao.

NMBWA does not require experience for them to grant a positive assessment to be able to pursue a successful bridging program. However, Dept of Health requires 2 years post grad experience (employed)while Hollywood Hospital requires 1 year or 1,840 hrs of post grad experience(training is acceptable). I only have trainings but I was accepted by Hollywood Private Hospital for the January 2009 run. I am currently undergoing ward nurse training to complete my 1,840 hours. I hope to complete this training by Dec. 04.

I hope this will enlighten and guide you in deciding which path to take.

Good luck and God bless.

hi nursemavi, i forgot that you are from davao city like me (rationale: to establish rapport).. just want to ask somethings and clarifications:

  • In davao city, there is only one doctor in Davao Doc Hosp who is accredited by australian embassy for the medicals.. so for visa/embassy purposes, the total cost is only P2,800 ?? ..i thought it runs around P6t-P8t..

  • Australian hospitals require nurses to have been vaccinated or immunized by certain diseases which are listed in their website. How did you meet this requirement? Did you obtain a doctor's certification that indeed you are immunized by such diseases? Or did you undertake a serum tests which proves you are immunized?

  • Your plane fare is very very cheap ha!! good for you.. any advice please how you get such inexpensive ticket?

  • Your visa cost/fee is AUD$100 which i assume a short stay visa (around 3 months). I believe it is not a student visa because the latter costs AUD$450.. Am i ryt?

  • I assume you did not go through an agency, so you processed your application yourself.. Who processed your visa application in manila? I'm wondering because i did not see any visa processing expenses in your posts above (although you mentioned Aud$100). If somebody or an travelling/immigration agency processed it, how much is the processing fee?

  • Who arranged your room accommodation in australia? Do you have relatives there or does the Hollywood hospital have accommodation which you could rent? I believe finding room accommodation is one of the major obstacles of applicants who process their papers on their own (unlike those hooked with agencies, which have ready room accommodation as part of the deal). Any advice please..

  • Just wanna be sure, so your monthly budget for rental, food and transpo, etc. is Aus$1,000, which means $250 per week(plus 25% allowance).. Is this enough already? Pardon my being makulit.

  • Do you have personal health/accident insurance during your stay in australia? How much is the premium and where/how did you acquire it?

  • Do you have personal/professional indemnity coverage during your clinical duty in australia? How much is the premium and where/how did you acquire it?

  • You have a return flight ticket. As what you know, after passing your training and a hospital will hire and visa sponsor/nominate you, how long is the processing of your existing visa converted to working visa? 3 months from day of application for conversion/nomination? 2 weeks? what's your idea on this?

Nursemavi of Davao :), i hope you would answer my queries. It means a lot to me.. There are many things that i know about the processes in going to Australia but somethings i just don't know or sure of, like those queries above..

Later when you are there, please share to us how easy or difficult the Bridging Program is, at least other members will have an idea and be intellectually prepared so that they will not be compliance (hindi kumpyansa bah).

Thank you so much.. hope to hear from you..

luckily ill be taking the challenge test. right now my only problem is test B . really dont know how should i prepare for that. anyway i know we can pull this through. good luck to everyone.:yeah:

hello, i think you should be worried of the Part A.. Part B has 99% passing chances as mentioned in one of the members in a previous page in this thread.. As long as you have hospital experience and you review physical assessment, and nursing management/interventions for common disorderss like cardiac, DM, HPN, then you can go through.. It's really PART A that is tough if you don't have the review materials, but if you do, it's chicken like peanut,:specs: or peanut like chicken, :banghead:whatever..

million thanks for your kindness to enlighten me ~ :redbeathe your info is really useful~

however, if you don't mind,i just want to clarify my understanding about this.

1. aud 880 for hollywood private hospital is only for 6 weeks clinicals or this cost including 4 weeks theoreticals as well.

well, i am wondering how come it is so cheap if it is compared with curtin university of technology 6 months which will cost aud10,800.00

2. can i take 4 weeks theoreticals of hollywood private hospital via distance learning the same as the dept of health?

3.how many weeks does the 160 hours clinicals of the dept of health take? i just want to calculate the expenses of cost living during that period.

thank you so much ~ god bless :heartbeat

1) 4 weeks theoreticals plus 6 weeks clinicals = $880.. this amount is

confirmed. tuition fees really vary, there is nothing really fishy here..

in fact, said amount could be returned to you if they hire you under

certain terms and conditions (yep, im not kidding, meaning zero tuition)

2) distance learning is only being offered by wa dept. of health. for

hollywood, you must be there in said 10 weeks program..

3) maximum clinical duty time per week is 40 hours, meaning 8 hours per

day.. if drug calculation is correct, uhm, you can finish within 4 weeks

if you go on duty for 8 hours a day for 5 days in a week, gets? be

wary though, that they may require you to extend your clinical duty

for say 2 weeks if they feel you need further exposure or assessment.

oki dok..

fortunately yeah, i have the review materials. :yeah::jester: i bought it from someone who already took and passed test A. he sought a consultancy's service. i think his username here is JustinRN. he pioneered the idea about QNC and all these things. Thanks to him

By the way, i am inexperienced so Test B would probably be a problem for me. :crying2:
