New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

these stories of delays do scare me... someone here posted about stat dec. do a search -like a few pages back :) forgot who it was, i think it was ryan09.

Thanks New Mac.. yeah its really scary... to think that we're paying a hard-earned money yet they dont keep to their word.,huh!

@dregnag.. I dont know what kind of stat dec.. it just says that i needed to submit one.

Im really disappointed with this courier, i thought all the while my papers arrived safely yet they've proven themselves wrong.. on hindsight, how come based on their tracking service it was received by somebody from NBV?

ricci88, maybe you should ask the courier the details as to who actually received the package then inform NBV about it...my case might be an isolated case..have faith that yours was received already. when we called up NBV last Monday, they told us that they have a two-week backlog due to the holidays...so that might be the reason...:)

Well if it worked for chabeli ..it should work for us =) assuming his transcript merely indicated the month and year.

Was it like that chabeli? did your transcript involve the month and year only ?

yup only month and date in the transcript.

@ blessed 23: for nbv, ielts is not yet needed in the application for registration. see checklist.. this means you can apply even without it....

when i applied i haven't taken ielts yet. there is a form that nbv gives you later on which asks you to submit ielts results plus the "notification for acceptance in a bridge program".. that's later on...

i agree with what ryan is saying...stick to what is being asked for... just follow the checklist... the checklist is found in the pdf file on the last page of the application form and not this one below... the one here is all the requirements you need but you don't need it all at the same time.

each overseas applicant must satisfy the board that they:

  1. have obtained a qualification that is substantially equivalent or is based on similar competencies to an accredited course that leads to registration in victoria;
  2. are competent in speaking or communicating in english for the purposes of practising as a registered nurse;
  3. are in good standing with the nursing regulatory authority in the country of last practice;
  4. are fit and competent to practise as a registered nurse; and
  5. have provided evidence of identity and have paid the prescribed fee.

to apply for registration the applicant must:

  • complete the prescribed application form and pay the prescribed fee; and
  • provide satisfactory documentary evidence (as described in the application form) which supports the application and fulfills the requirements of s. 6 or s. 7 health professions registration act 2005; and
  • provide any further information or documentation in respect of the application the board may reasonably require.

the board may also require applicants to fulfill the following requirements prior to granting registration:

  • undertake an english language skills test approved by the board; and/or
  • successfully complete a board accredited competency program for overseas qualified nurses.

the qualifications and requirements for registration in victoria are prescribed by the health professions registration act 2005.

@joijoi: as long as you have all the requirements that is in the checklist for application you can apply... although i am not a second courser, i know of someone who is a second courser who got positive assessement...

always bear in mind that everything ...all this process are not guaranteed so it's a risk... in terms of the money we shell out and all but if you don't try at all , you'll never know :)

fuel everything with prayers... it;s what will keep all of us going...

@drednag, i already asked the courier and told me that it was delivered 4 days after i mailed them.. seems like i have to send it again.

thanks again dregnag

guys just want to asked if its ok for me to take the BC instead of IDP for IELTS?

yes, haven't done with the ielts yet..:p:yeah:

Hi! my friend wrote a day month and year on the application for nbv although it wasnt indicated on her TOR. she then got a letter from nbv asking her to send a TOR that has the day month and year. our school cant do changes on the TOR but they gave her a certification indicating the commencement date, completion and graduation date. she hasn't mailed the lacking documents yet to nbv. she still needs a certification from the hosp where she worked that should state she was already an RN when she volunteered..

thank you chabeli for the reply i will have to try to gather first all my documents and see if i have all ready including the money ha ha ha! thank you and goodluck to you out there keep us posted please

Thanks for the responses ryan09 and chabeli :up: :) I was actually referring to the additional requirements that the bridging course providers may require from overseas nurses prior to the start of the clinical component part of the bridging program and not the Board's requirement for application itself. I just know a friend who is already working in Perth wherein back then, she was required to submit valid certificates for Red Cross BLS and Senior First Aid trainings along with "Working with Children" clearance prior to commencement of her clinical placement in HPH in completion of her bridging course... I'm not quite sure if I understand it correctly, but do you mean Deakin and La Trobe do not require these? If so, then that's a relief. :up: :yeah::D I am open for correction though. :) But I agree with you, each state in Australia and in this case, each BP providers vary with their requirements... which will soon change come July 2010 when the national board (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia) steps in. Goodluck on your studies over there guys and do keep us posted. Hopefully, the rest of us here in the forum who are also Victoria-bound will be next in line. :yeah:

yes, haven't done with the ielts yet..:p:yeah:

Either institution is okay as they are both authorized to conduct the exam. :) I took mine in British Council and I was glad I did it there. :up: They are offering unlimited free access to review materials in their library exclusive to their registrants and at that time (November 2009) they were giving away free review CDs to early registrants which proved to be of EXCEPTIONAL help to me in my preparation for the exam in obtaining the required band scores (minimum mark of 7 in all categories, and an overall band score of at least 7). But it looks like they ran out of those free CDs as they were only good to the last piece. You can check with them directly about this. And the most important and fun part was that BC registrants are able to view their exam results (13 days after the test) online via their website even before they receive/claim their actual TRFs (Test Result Form) :yeah: Just my tuppence worth . :twocents: Best of luck on your IELTS preparation :up:

i used fedex and dhl for my application & ielts-c/o test center and verification-c/o prc respectively. any same incidents with these couriers? incidents of lost packages are scary... really scary. :(

Likewise here. I sent my application to the Board through FedEx while PRC sent my verification (Certificate of Good Standing) via DHL. All these horror stories of packages going astray are sure to give us something to be anxious about but let's continue to be buoyant that all our applications have already been received and are just there sitting in their "Big" mailroom, just waiting to be processed... and fervently hoping it would be soon... The waiting part is the challenging and tedious element of this whole process - sure to measure our patience. I agree with drednag, patience is a virtue. Let's keep our hopes flaming and spirits high for the moment :up::up::up:
