New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

@ drednag and new mac, thanks guys. i hope we'll all be able to get a favorable assessment from NBV.

@ drednag: I was also supposed to send an application to NMBWA and QNC at the same time I lodged my application to NBV for fallbacks as I've also found out about the introduction of Victorian College of Health and Nursing (VCHN) in NMBWA and the CAS for QNC but I decided not to. It was confirmed to me by someone from VCHN that the course that requires eligibilities letters from NMBWA and NBV are the both the same. The course is for 10 weeks in which 4 weeks is the theoretical component in Victoria and 6 weeks would be the pratical/clinical placement in Western Australia, and the course fee is AUD$10 000 - approximately the same amount that I'll be shelling out in Deakin and La Trobe. The partition of the course in two different states poses a disadvantage as it would require one to relocate from Melbourne to Perth just to complete the course. Plus, it is hundred folds more expensive than HPH (AUD$1 100) and DOH-RPH (AUD$2 200). In addition, I carefully studied their 10-week course structure to be seemingly compressed as it is also patterned with HPH which is known to be very competitive, meaning difficult (e.g. a couple of 500 word case studies, 100% accuracy in drug calculations exam, etc) . In that scenario, the 14 week-course of Deakin and 13-week course of La Trobe appeals to me more as it would give me better time to saturate myself more on studies and be more confident in clinical placements.

Hi, Reiken830...wow, I see your point..I did not know that VCHN requires the student to go to two different states for the bridging parts...but yeah, I noticed how complicated their process is and the requirements they have for their students are tough...hmmm, thanks, bro.:p:up::up::up:

why drednag? what happened?

I've been emailing NBV and they keep telling me they have not yet received my application documents, just the verification. But the FEDEX tracking states that they delivered the package to NBV last December 14 and it was received ...I wonder what happened to my documents?:cry::cry::eek:

No, problem bro :mnnnrsngrk:

:smackingf We're on the same boat, bro. I thought mine was an isolated case. I corresponded with a customer service officer in NBV and was also told the same thing - that they only received my verification and is still awaiting my application packet. That made me anxious and so I requested that she kindly double check it by giving her the details of the supposed date and time of delivery and receipt of the packet and the person who received it from their office. I also coursed it through FEDEX and their record shows it was delivered last December 15 at 3:07 pm and was received ".

Now, I am awaiting for a positive response from the customer service officer. Hopefully, it will finally be traced. We really have to be vigilant with how our paperworks get sent, received, and processed so we'd have a clearer timeline of our projected goals.

I contacted CAS, and was told if I sit my exam on February, as long as I pass 2 of the four modules, I would still be able to continue. Goodluck to me!

Hi Antigone, are you referring to take the educational modules if you pass 2 out of 4 exams? They would still impose the deadline though. All this deadline is really pressuring all of us. I hope we can all make it.

Hi guys, it's been a while since my last post. Anyway, is there anyone out there who's thinking of or already in the process of the application or already doing BP in NSW? I need your help guys. Hope someone can PM me. One more thing, how come only QNC imposes a deadline and other territories have no announcement yet as to how to go about with the impending "deadline" on July? Reason I'm asking is, I wanna know if it's still possible for me to apply to NSW for the BP? What do you guys think? I am about to take the Challenge test (of QNC) on February and I'm thinking of another route just in case I fail more than 2 modules...

Thanks guys!

update: (from the girlfriend, lol)

i'm bored because i got nothing to do for now. in their class, only 3 filipinos, only chabeli is from the philippines because the 2 other filipinos are from uk. the rest are indians (18 of them) and then 1 japanese.

we're here in the university accomodaton for now. we are trying to look for another house bec the university accomodation is expensive. the houses around are cheaper but we didn't have enough time to look for a place. i went to the marketplace yesterday to get groceries and rice hahahaha...

if in case you choose la trobe university, find out right away if it's in bendigo campus or in bundoora campus. but so far so good here in la trobe and they are trying to get work in the nursing home during weekends.

--reporting live from la trobe :) update you again next time... :)

i am a newbie and am really interested in this topic, specially those written by aelith - so informative. but then upon seeing that it is up to this page now (373), i decided to post reply hoping that somebody can summarize the whole thread for me according to my needs. please!

i am a second courser local rn from june 2008 batch. hospital experience is just 2 mos as a volunteer in a 75 bed govt hospital, although i had been a private nurse of my mother since i graduated.

i am interested in migrating to australia as a nurse. i have a spouse and 2 children, wherein the youngest is now 6mos. i don't plan to bring them right away since i know that migrating is expensive especially if i am to opt to study first. i do not have any relatives there but my husband has a cousin in nsw.

i have seen in the local news papers that the age limit of australia is now 41. you see, i am now 38 yo. i cannot have the luxury to wait for vacancy at our local hospitals only offering volunteer positions. currently, i have a few money left and have parents whom i could borrow money from. i've talked to friends in aus who are taking 2 year course and had taken a bridging course. the bridging course they say say is much cheaper, but aelith says the 2 year course is better.

i wanted something that could give me the chance to study and support myself and my family right away and possibly bring them to aus the soonest possible on a permanent resident status. btw, my other course is it (last working experience is 2004) and i have a tesda certificate as a caregiver.

please help.

hi,

visit www.nbv.org.au . we started processing our application in april of 2008 and then here in australia for the bridge program by december 2009. that's only 8 months. what took the process longer is the philippine post office delivery times that could take up to 1 month from the time they received the letter from the nbv via registered mail --but that's how it is...

to ensure that everything will be processed faster. please send all complete documents and requirements that you find in the checklist from the link of the overseas nurses. if you do not have ielts yet, still pass the rest of the requirements because they can process it even without ielts like in my case. although the school will not admit you unless you have the ielts.

if you apply in nbv asap, that would be great so you're done with step 1.

reminder: ensure that you follow correctly the procedure in certifying the documents. do not send originals.

p.s. by the way, my bf does not have have post grad experience.

Yup. So I don't know how we can squeeze in everything, but hey, nothing is impossible. :) Goodluck to us!

Question: is there ever someone who passed everything (Part A) without doing the modules?

hey angels in the sickroom,

awaiting for my BP to commence on the 15th...

meanwhile im just forcing myself reading (in advance) the books that deakin recommend me to buy...

:uhoh3: Pathophysiology book drives me crazy...

anyway, i hope to see filipinos in the class....

apllication, verification, IELTS - all received [NBV]! :) now what? am i supposed to receive any acknowledgement letter/email? :)

You wait for 28 business days thats around 2 months or so. I have question for others there..Have you ever sent anything by EMS here in Manila? Is that service reliable? I need to send additional papers to NBV and dont really trust the EMS system since i have heard stories about it..bad stories

@chabeli

Thanks for continuing to update us on the situation. You are like our local news correspondent with the information you provide. To chabeli's gf. How are the daily expense like. Could you help us understand and also are you allowed to work. I was wondering what visa you are on and is it the same as chabeli? Thanks. Are the people nice ?
