New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

If I apply for CAS this week, will I be finished by June 30? Is it doable?

Is it true that those who are taking the CAS should pass everything, because they wont be allowed to take modules anymore?

antigone:

yes, they require that you pass all of the subjects. if you fail one subject, you just have to wait for july next year to see the new registration process and apply using that.

applying this january will put you in some disadvatage due to time constraints but still you could try. we wouldn't know unless we try

^So if I go through (I'm at that step wherein I'm being referred to CAS already) and start studying now, when do you think I should take the exam since there wouldn't be modular studies option anymore? I'm under the impression I should take this ASAP, but I don't want to sacrifice reviewing for the exam.

Is it possible to review starting this week and take it mid-Feb? Will that be enough?

i think it would be best to take it on march. how long did your assessment take?

I started March, then they needed more documents because I'm a second courser and I got the go signal to pass my IELTS on end of October. I forwarded my IELTS second week of November. They sent my letter to take CAS on end of December.

I am a newbie and am really interested in this topic, specially those written by aelith - so informative. But then upon seeing that it is up to this page now (373), I decided to post reply hoping that somebody can summarize the whole thread for me according to my needs. Please!

I am a second courser local RN from June 2008 batch. Hospital experience is just 2 mos as a volunteer in a 75 bed govt hospital, although I had been a private nurse of my mother since I graduated.

I am interested in migrating to Australia as a nurse. I have a spouse and 2 children, wherein the youngest is now 6mos. I don't plan to bring them right away since I know that migrating is expensive especially if I am to opt to study first. I do not have any relatives there but my husband has a cousin in NSW.

I have seen in the local news papers that the age limit of Australia is now 41. You see, I am now 38 yo. I cannot have the luxury to wait for vacancy at our local hospitals only offering volunteer positions. Currently, I have a few money left and have parents whom I could borrow money from. I've talked to friends in Aus who are taking 2 year course and had taken a bridging course. The bridging course they say say is much cheaper, but aelith says the 2 year course is better.

I wanted something that could give me the chance to study and support myself and my family right away and possibly bring them to Aus the soonest possible on a permanent resident status. BTW, my other course is IT (last working experience is 2004) and I have a tesda certificate as a caregiver.

Please help.

@ drednag and new mac, thanks guys. i hope we'll all be able to get a favorable assessment from nbv.

@ chabeli: hi chabeli and girlfriend. it's good to know that you've already started your studies in la trobe. please do keep us posted for any updates and stories as we're also bound for victoria (deakin or la trobe, whichever of these institutions would still be open for enrolment when the time comes that we get our assessment letters from the board - and i do hope it's soon.)

@ drednag: i was also supposed to send an application to nmbwa and qnc at the same time i lodged my application to nbv for fallbacks as i've also found out about the introduction of victorian college of health and nursing (vchn) in nmbwa and the cas for qnc but i decided not to. it was confirmed to me by someone from vchn that the course that requires eligibilities letters from nmbwa and nbv are the both the same. the course is for 10 weeks in which 4 weeks is the theoretical component in victoria and 6 weeks would be the pratical/clinical placement in western australia, and the course fee is aud$10 000 - approximately the same amount that i'll be shelling out in deakin and la trobe. the partition of the course in two different states poses a disadvantage as it would require one to relocate from melbourne to perth just to complete the course. plus, it is hundred folds more expensive than hph (aud$1 100) and doh-rph (aud$2 200). in addition, i carefully studied their 10-week course structure to be seemingly compressed as it is also patterned with hph which is known to be very competitive, meaning difficult (e.g. a couple of 500 word case studies, 100% accuracy in drug calculations exam, etc) . in that scenario, the 14 week-course of deakin and 13-week course of la trobe appeals to me more as it would give me better time to saturate myself more on studies and be more confident in clinical placements.

with regards to my halted application to qnc, the deadline to complete all requirements by june 30, 2010 - strictly passing part a & b challenge tests (which is more of a pressure than an option) including registration due to the commencement of the july 2010 australian health practitioner regulation agency (ahpra) discouraged me from pursuing the queensland pathway.

apllication, verification, IELTS - all received [NBV]! :) now what? am i supposed to receive any acknowledgement letter/email? :)

I contacted CAS, and was told if I sit my exam on February, as long as I pass 2 of the four modules, I would still be able to continue. Goodluck to me!
