New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Hi Aelith..

so in order to do the 4week practical or part b..i have to fail the clinical module in part A. I thought one was allowed to choose the part b or an educational module..So which is true ? I found this in the pocket book for the Part B of the CAS exam

"Applicants who achieved 80% or more in the Evidence Based Practice/Clinical Issues component of the Part A Challenge Test but did not pass all other subject areas are eligible to proceed to Part B Clinical Challenge upon completion of the required education modules. Applicants who are eligible to proceed to Part B Clinical Challenge may opt to undertake the clinical practice education module instead."

yes this is true. one can choose either to do the Part B or to do the Clinical Education Module..:)

...and the tram too. There is a free tram for tourist in the city, and a tourist guide as well. Anyway, how about my enquiry with regard to police clearance, is it the nbi clearance? Did u submit it yourself with ETEA. thanks

hi, im sorry for the late reply to your query.. yes, thats the NBI clearance that we have there in the PHilippines...i submitted a scanned copy of all my documents with ETEA while i still applied with them.. no expenses for mailing just through emails even the receipts of the payments i made with them..

thank you so much for your pm, for informing me about the 2 consultancy firms. well, about asnc-ansm (i'm allowed to say it, right? sorry in advance if i am not) i think they are legitimate. because i've had my relatives there check if the owner (poc) is indeed a registered migration agent. he is. and his business name is registered there with what is equivalent to our securities and exchange commission here in the philippines. his photo is even shown on its website. i've also done my homework on him here, that they are also registered with our securities and exchange commission. also, they do not require us to pay them in cash, rather to deposit payments in a bank. we just have to show them the deposit slip. their package costs about 9,500 aud. i guess you already know the inclusions.

my hubby and i tried to compute and see how much we are gonna save if we do it on our own. let's just say that we had allowed for a big amount for my miscellaneous expense (a bit of shopping money, transpo/bus money etc. not to mention that i will be renting a whole apartment for myself) and we still came up with a savings of roughly 3,800-4,000 aud. the thing is, we are thinking of going altogether (the three of us). so if that should happen then i guess we will incur more expenses but at least we will be together in one apartment. it's like we are gonna have a taste of things to come. me working (or should i say going to my clinical placement :coollook:, and my son and hubby just staying at home, waiting for me :chuckle). anyway, if we decide the latter then i'm sure all of our expenses will almost be equal (if not more than) to that if we decide to sign up with the consultancy firm. but for singles like you i presume, if you diy then you'll be sure to save 4000 aud, even more if you really spend you pocket money wisely.

by the way, what review materials are you using? just the four books or do you have access to review materials from other agencies?

thanks again nyk!

when in june? i have yet to take the ielts too and i'm also scheduled this june. good luck to us!

yes thank you for the update. when i attended the orientation of the consultancy firm that i mention, the owner said that before, if one passes all the written parts of the challenge test then next would be the 1-day clinical but now, he said, we already have the option to choose whether we would like to undergo the 1 day or the 4 week (160 hrs) clinical placement. that's good news for me because i don't think i am confident enough to prove my skills in 1 day. :o

so you're doing everything by yourself too? what are your review materials?

thanks again everyone! best of luck to all of us! hope that someday soon i'll bump into one of you guys in qld! maybe we can hit the beach or something :yeah::yeah:

right, ansm is a legitimate consultancy/migration agent but it's not registered with poea. one of the staff of poea that i phoned explained that this firm is legitimate to do migration consultancies but not with offering jobs because they are not registered wih poea to do so. that's the reason i and other 7 friends withdrawn from this firm because there is no job offer, as explained by poea. but this is still an individualized decision, it varies per peson, but in the long run.... good luck to all of us:coollook:

I am not sure if you are aware of the National Registration on July 2010. Anyway, endorsement of license will be obsolete at the time since every nurse will just have one license valid throughout Australia. However, before that date, the current law regarding state licenses is still in place.

Ya, this was discussed to me by a prospective employer/sponsor that I applied with, so my target goal for now is to pass the challenge tests, have my QLD license and have it endorsed to NSW or Victoria. Being optimistic...not to go as far as July 2010.. (Crossing my fingers) good luck to all of us.

Yes, I just re-read it. My mistake :) Thanks for the correction.

Thanks AELITH!

I am still inexperienced, just passed the June board exam. and like so many others I too have tried applying to hospitals and even clinics but got the same line over and over again. "We'll just call you in there's any vacancy..." :crying2:.

Anyway, one of the reasons why I'm also considering a consultancy firm is because they promise to hold reviews and provide us with all the materials that we will need. I know I can purchase the 4 books recommended but I find it difficult to review at home. Being a wife, and a mom it's just...difficult hehehe... need to cook, need to spend time with son, need to spend time with hubby when he comes home, etc. But hubby's 100% supportive with all my decisions so he understands that I have to attend reviews outside. And as of the moment I've read somewhere in this thread (not quite sure if here or another one) that only agencies or consultancy firms hold their own reviews.

Mostly that's what I'm after.

But you're right. DIY is much more practical and I know it is "do-able". Hehehe after following this thread for days now I think I know how am I going to proceed if indeed I decide to do it on my own. Especially you, I have learned a lot from you with your earlier posts. Thanks! :yeah:

I will continue to follow this thread. Will also post my progress when I decide already as to how to go about this QLD-CAS thing.

Thanks again!

I understand your situation and I know it's really hard to juggle everything especially when you have the little beauty already :) You're right that agencies are the only ones that offer reviews for the CAS program - but not all; in fact, I only know of ANSM who conducts the reviews and help with the modules. Several nurses here have signed up with ANSM too but I haven't heard from them for a looonng time. I suggest you follow whatever makes you feel comfortable and secured. But choose your agency wisely ;) I think you've already attended ANSM's orientation.. but if not, I can forward you my email correspondence with them.

Good luck dear! And I hope you can keep us posted here. :) A lot of people will help you here.

As far as I know, ANSM doesn't give you job offers. What I think they are doing is they will just be introducing you to a sister company or other contact agency for the jobs. Not 100% sure about this, but this is what I remember they told me.

actually, the one offered by ansm is not for the whole family or could be for accommodation's part only. all other expenses, you will have to shoulder too. so, in the end, going with the agency and bringing your whole family there will incur more expenses on your part. the tickets, food, transportation, leisure, miscellaneous expenses of your family should be factored in too. ansm's package is tailor-made for a single person as far as i know.

Hi Aelith,

Is 300,000 enough for me and my gf as financial requirement?? when i prorated the 12,000/year it is 1,000 AUD per month per person....plus we will be staying with a relative....

my plan is just to get married (civil) before i get my student visa since we decided that she will go with me for the whole duration of my course....initially our plan was for her to just visit me 2x ... but if she ever gets to work 4 hrs per day for the whole 3 month period she would earn around the same if she stays here in the Philippines.

I think 1k per month is the pro-rata rate for the main applicant for the student visa. But for the spouse it is 4.2k AUD/yr plus travel expenses for both of you. I think 300k should suffice for a 3 months stay plus a declaration from your relative that he/she would be responsible for your accommodation and other expenses would help I think.

Btw, what student visa will you be applying for? 575?

same rules apply to both countries..nurses coming from the philippines needs to do a 6-12 weeks competency course in new zealand and 7 week course in australia.. You must be a staff nurse before you apply with a min. of 1 yr experience..I worked in New Zealand for 2 yrs before transfering here in Australia ..

that bridge program will take how many months? been working here in Philippines for 2 yrs, and have existing contact for US, but since retrogression is still on effect i'm planning to apply for Aus or UK.

thanks!:yeah:
