New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

hey guys! it's been a while...been busy the past few days, didnt have time to check on the thread. :typing:p

anyway, for those taking the IELTS:

Though task achievement (meeting the required number of words) is one of the criteria for grading, i think it would be more prudent to be concerned about the content of the composition than counting the words used. More than anything, the writing task (1) assesses one's ability to effectively write a clear, logical description about a figure. So one should work on the actual style and skill of writing--determing trends and salient points in a graph/process, and explaining them in a comprehensible manner. There's no problem with making sure the min number of words is met, but make sure this doesnt become the primary goal, coz you'll tend to write aimlessly and incoherently in an attempt to fill up the page. i think when you get the hang of describing figures, the ideas will flow freely and you wont even notice you've gone way past the 150-word requirement. :p just my opinion.:twocents: :D goodluck to all of you taking the IELTS!:redbeathe:wink2:

Now back to nursing in AUS, does anyone have an idea about the actual costs involved in taking the clinical placement/challenge in Brisbane? Where is the challenge test usually held? Are there inns/hotels nearby to stay at? How about the transpo? How much would it cost (for one day AND for the 1month placement)? I'm asking these questions coz I'm on the process of laying down the proposal to my mom, hehe. :argue: And you know it can possibly get bloody :chuckle , so i'd like to get all the facts and info ready. I browsed through some inns/hotels in brisbane before, but i was a bit confused with the rates coz it didnt say if the payment has to be given weekly or monthly...And, where exactly are the placements done? Coz i also have to consider the transpo, how to get to the place, how much that'd take, etc....err...help? :banghead:

And oh, just a tip i got before: you dont really have to count all of the words. Assuming each line has 10 words, try to fill in at least 17 or 18 lines to make sure you're past the 150-mark. And when you practice, do it on paper as you would do in the exam. The experience is quite different on the computer coz it's easier and faster to type/edit/erase, etc. In the actual exam, you wont be able to do these so might as well practice with your own handwriting. At least you'll be more in tune with your writing strengths and weaknesses, and will be able to manage your time more accordingly. Goodluck! ;D

@luna538 regarding cost of CAS program and accomodation

Your expenses depends on the pathway you'll choose. If you'll take the 1st pathway or the clinical challenge test,

Challenge Test : AUD 260 (The Challenge test can be taken in Manila.)

Given that you've passed the challenge test, you're now eligible for Part B or the Clinical competence assessment which costs AUD 504 and needs to be done in Aus, so you'll have to add the cost of your airfare (around PHP 50 000 two way) plus VISA processing including Medical (around PHP 7000) and your accomodation.

If for example you go directly to the educational modules or Pathway B, you'll be required to get 4 modules and each module cost's AUD 902, after completing them, then you go to Aus for the 1 month placement, that's airfare + 1 month accomodation. If you rent a flat or an apartment unit, it can cost you around AUD 200-250 a week so that's AUD 800 - 1K a month plus food and utilities. Food is around AUD 7-10/ meal if you eat out, you could save if you buy from the grocery and prepare your own food. Public transpo is around AUD 2.50 one way.

Don't forget to add in the application and overseas assessment fee for QNC (AUD 158) and other miscellanous expenses like IELTS, notarization, prc verification fee, postage or courier fee.

Tip* If you want to save, what you can do is "gamble" by taking the Challenge Test, If for example you were able to pass 1 subject, that would equate to a savings of AUD 696 (902 less 206 = 696), if you were able to pass 3 subjects then thats AUD 2500:yeah: (3 modules at 902 each = 2706 less 206 = 2500). Get the idea? But if you don't pass any subject then you lose AUD 206.

i shish, can you pm me the name of the agency please.. it would help me a lot.. thank you

Branyan has given you a good breakdown of the money to be spent in the CAS pathway including the possible expenses for accommodation and the like. As for the transpo, it would greatly depend on whether you would want to rent right next to the facility or a bit further. The clinical placement can be done in a lot of places and so you would need to first find out where you will do yours, after which, you can then look for possible accommodations.

If you are going to tell your mom a possible budget for the expenses, I would suggest following what Branyan has given you regarding rents. That price he has given is the actual price if you are going to rent in Brisbane, which is as far as I know, the area with the highest rental price in Qld. Most hostels and inns have only nightly rates by default, but they also sometimes offer weekly or monthly packages. Another tip I could give is to assume a budget which is a little more than the actual expenses so you wont ran out of money when you are there or just so your mom would be ready for extra expenses if ever.

And oh, just a tip i got before: you dont really have to count all of the words. Assuming each line has 10 words, try to fill in at least 17 or 18 lines to make sure you're past the 150-mark. Just another thing, there are two parts in the writing - one with 150 and another with 250 words. But above is a good tip

@ trion08:

i would give you an estimate only as prices really vary and could increase by the time you finally apply.

cas fees:

written test: 260 aud

clinical assessment: 504 aud

source: http://www.qnc.qld.gov.au/upload/pdfs/information_sheets/registration/competence_assessment_service.pdf

education modules: 902 aud

source: http://www.cas.cqu.edu.au/fcwviewer/view.do?page=655

subtotal:

challenge test: 764 aud

education modules: 3608 aud

brisbane expenses:

living expenses:

accommodation: 100-120 aud/week (shared accommodation)

180-250 aud/week (one bedroom to two bedroom accommodation)

food: 80-100 aud/ week

electricity & gas: 20 aud/week

phone: 20 aud/week

transportation: 20 aud/week

subtotal weekly expenses: 240 - 280 aud (shared acco) & 320 - 410 aud (1 br - 2br acco)

total monthly expenses: 960 - 1120 aud (shared acco) & 1280 – 1640 aud (1 br up)

other expenses:

miscellaneous: 500 - 1000 aud

n.b. the above money is more like an emergency money or shopping money. can also be used for tours if you choose to avail those during your stay.

n.b. fare depends on the flight carrier. the quoted price above includes possible taxes and other surcharges.

total 1 month living and other expenses: 2260 – 3120 aud (shared acco) & 2580 – 3640 aud (1 br up)

extras:

airport pick-up: 100 aud

n.b. contact the university for this to verify the price. they may or may not arrange this for you.

visa expenses: 100 aud (tourist visa)

just a quick note: as far as i know, the agency in manila will only pay one-way of the air fare and will not pay for the modules. :)double check if the agency's rate is really 380k php or 10k aud. 4k aud vs 10k aud :)

Yes, you can avail of a courier, you just have to tell them that you want it delivered via courier.

good day to everybody. i would just like to ask regarding the papers needed in qld. I have mine authenticated at DFA, the one with the red ribbon attached to it, my question is do i still need to have it notarized or would it be enough? or do i need to photocopy it then have it notarized? thanx!

Hi branyan!

When are you going back to Au? Why did you have to come back here rather than converting your visa in Au? I'm quite worried with employment opportunities especially now that everyone is laying-off workers. The world is in crisis.
