I'm tryting to become a neonatologist and am wondering if getting my bachelors in ultrasounding counts as a pedatric degree? also interested in knowing for any baby nurses out there where you were able to get your degree I live in the west coast and havent had much luck in finding a med school for it

What on earth is this "bachelor's in pediatrics " that you keep referring to that you think you need? There is no such thing.

Maybe you want to be a neonatal nurse practitioner??? You would first need a bachelor's in nursing, then become a NP specializing in neonates. There should be dozens of possible schools on the west coast. Ultrasonography has NOTHING to do with pediatrics...except you may learn u/s techniques for kiddos.

That why I'm asking if getting a bachelors in ultrasounding could count as my bachelors degree prior to med school because I need a bachelors degree in the field of pediatrics. That all my advisor said was getting a degree in pediatrics so all I'm asking is if ultrasounding is in that category.....

Sorry that part was confusing. I want to do something other than nursing for the next seven or so years while I go through school. I need something that pays good while I go to medical school. I originally wanted to be a radiology technician but did not get into the program for this year however I also applied for the RN and got accepted. Now for the university I want to attend for my bachelors has an ultrasounding degree or sonography. But I need an associates in radiology. So I'm trying to see if a bachelors in sonography will get me anywhere no where I want to be. Which is a neonatologist people! I'm not an idiot. . I came here because I'm trying to get some answers. You can quit trying to correct me. (That wasn't to you Christy1019.) You did answer my bachelors question. So thank you for that. That helps a lot. As for the other people, Neonatology is what I want to do. Not a nurse practitioner or anything else. Just neonatology.

Right. So you haven't answered my question, but I'm guessing it sounds like you're aiming to be a doctor? Which does beg the question why you're asking on a site called AllNurses, but okay.

You don't need a bachelor's degree in "the field of pediatrics" to get into med school. There is just no such thing. Your advisor is wrong. You need a bachelor's degree, period. Some degrees have traditionally been looked on more favorably by med school admissions committees, such as biology, but I believe that's a little more relaxed nowadays.

That said, I don't think a bachelor's in SONOGRAPHY (if you're considering the field, at least call it by its correct name) will do much for you if med school is your goal. From the five minutes of research I've done, most ultrasound technicians have an associate's degree or certificate, and the bachelor's is for people who want to advance in the field of sonography and perhaps run a department or similar. Anyone who is stating a preference for you to have a pediatric-related degree will not be impressed by a degree in sonography.

Why would I think ultrasounding would be any part of a pediatric requirement ? Hmmmm maybe cause your dealing with the body and pregnancies? Maybe cause you need to know the development of the fetus?You don't have to be so rude. And there is a bachelors in it. I already know what school I'm going to for it. That wasn't my question. As for med school. I'm fully aware that I need to go to med school. -_- That question was how can I find a school where I can become a neonatologist? Like specific med schools.

It's not rude to inform you that things are not how you keep insisting they are.

Ultrasound technicians take pictures of things. It is a technical skill (hence "technician"). They are not responsible for interpretation of the pictures. That is the purview of the radiologist -- a doctor.

I know there is a bachelor's in sonography. I just googled it. Read my post properly.

And then go back and read the first few posts in this thread, because you appear to have missed the point that you cannot go to a specific med school for a particular specialty.

I'm going to be blunt, yet try to say this in the kindest way possible. You say you did not get into a rad tech program. Do you think you have the aptitude to get into med school? You seem...unfocused and confused. Both are traits that will hinder entry into med school.

And finally, I will say again - there is no such thing as a bachelor's in pediatrics.

You know ultrasound technicians do way more than fetal ultrasounds, right? And that it's possible to be an ultrasound tech and never look at a fetus or touch a pediatric patient in any way, depending on where you work. Ultrasound technicians could work in a breast imaging center and do nothing but breast ultrasounds. A bachelor's degree in sonography is NOT a pediatric degree.

There is no such thing, as others have said, as a "bachelor's degree in pediatrics." There are bachelor's degrees with focuses on children, like education or child development, but not "pediatrics" which specifically means the branch of medicine that deals with children.

Also, based on this thread, it doesn't really seem that you know what you're going to school for since you said you're both in an RN program and a sonography program. Which is it? And I'm going to have to agree with klone, if you couldn't get into a rad tech program, do you really think you'll be the best candidate for medical school?
