At the hospital where I work, the triple antibiotic ointment is kept in the treatment room with the band aids and other minor first aid supplies, all of a sudden we need a doctor's order to use the stuff, is this standard practice or just my hospital being weird? What's the policy where some of you work? Thanks!

Legally, we would need an order as well, but heaven help the nurse that pages the cardiologist on call for that!

Yep, we need an order for it at my LTC cause it's considered a med. Hell, we even need orders for cough drops.

our tao is kept in the pyxis so yes, we need a written order to get it !

We were told we need an order for it and an order to d/c it.

maybe it is a state wide thing, as we do NOT need an order--like the above post, we keep it on the wound cart with the gauze, band aides and cotton balls and all the other good wound stuff.

---I am sure now that I posted this, next week it will require and order!!

Yes it is considered a med. Maybe its something that can be on a standard order set

I'm a nursing student and we weren't allowed to apply the TAO until we'd completed our meds checkoffs. It seemed silly, but it's technically a med.

we need an order as well. our bacitracin is kept in the pyxis.

We don't need an order at my facility

yep.

In LTC if you put a band aid on...you need an order and about 5 pages of assessments for why...
