Hello,
This is my first time on here so I will explain the scenario. I am a b- to a c student. I am very safe and proficient in my client care but today I was released from the program with the explanation "the faculty feel you are unsafe to practice at clinical". There is nothing on my record that even indicates I am "unsafe" with patients. There has been "concern" of my inability to connect dots at times but STUDENTS don't always connect the dots. I am a 3rd semester student currently passing all courses with a steadily improvement track record. Clinical evals in the past of yielded 90% or greater. I just do not understand it. How is "slowly" connecting the dots relevant to direct patient care? If schooling is building a foundation and the majority of our "learning" occurs in the hospital setting wouldn't all student nurses be "unsafe"?
Just got off the phone with the department head and, well they do want me to come back as "protocols" were not followed. As far as "I'm a second semester student, and personally, those values made me raise my eyebrows. I miss alot of stuff too, and that was just one example. But, I don't know what he's truly like as a student, but that one example did perplex me.; what exactly made you raise your eyebrows? or perplexed you?
That is great news...hope things go better for you. Keep us posted on your progress.
Yes, great news! I'm happy for you. But now just keep your nose clean and follow all the "protocols." If anything unseemly occurs make sure to document. And ask to see your records and make sure you are in the clear. And, oh, play the game. Be sweet, sincere, and ready to learn, but still be yourself. Your goal is to get out of there with a diploma.
Well getting back is GREAT news, however, is ALSO bad news.... The way our program works is that we have "checkoffs" again and a final in physical assessment. Unfortunately these 2 things are very subjective on some aspects and basically I am giving them an opportunity to dot their i's and crossing their t's this go around.
To me, this currently is not a "learning" environment. A learning environment is one that everyone is calm, cool, and collective in which the teachers obviously were not in this situation.
What do you all think?
I am torn b/c I want to finish but I "feel" that if I go back I am setting myself up. I have looked into finishing with Excelsior and they said I would only have 4-5 classes to take if the classes I have now transfer..
Do you think it would be better to finish with excelsior or with the original institution in which this whole mess started?
OP, just do it.
What ever you do, don't seem as if you've done it before (that is where they will get you). Be sure to show up and sign in for double lab time. Be sure you are seen and noted. Ask any lab instructors you might have to watch you and critique you. Be sure you are seen and not heard (unless they want students to be heard, LOL). Make sure you volunteer for any scut work that nobody else seems to want to do without being obvious kiss-up. Please and thank you's all around.
As you have guessed, it's more than likely that you will be critiqued in skills by those who rec'd you to leave. So prep yourself to be "non-reactive" to any remarks/general huffiness. Show them you have nerves of steel!!
