Need help preparing for the Hesi A2 Entrance Exam

U.S.A. Michigan

I bought the study guide but I have heard it is not much help when preparing for this test. I will be taking it in Nov at MCC. I was wondering if anyone bought "Hesi Test Secrets" from Morrison Media. It is $40, but it is worth it?

Any study advice would be appreciated!

No it isn't worth the $40. I actually gave mine away and suggested she do the same after looking through it. Check out the site below talking about the same topic. Good luck to you!

Hi, I took. the Hesi Assessment exam and did very well on it. We were only required to take the Reading, Math and Grammar. I also considered buying the Morrison study guide because I was so nervous. I didn't know what to expect. I'm glad I didn't. The math portion has everthing the study guide has. I made a 96 on this portion. Addition, sub., division, fractions. Add, Sub, Mult & Div. of fractions. Measurements. Know your conversion of kilos to pounds and vise versa. I had 1 question with the coversion and 1 question on military time and the rest were basically fractions. OH! Also ratios and percents. Don't worry. I have been out of school for a while. I just needed a refresher on all the info and I practiced. Not hard at all. "How many ounces are in a cup, pint, gallon) The very first question for the math was, more or less 2+10+13+15+18, etc.. The reading part was not that hard either. Just make sure you answer what they are asking. The passages are very short. At the most 2 paragraphs. I wouldnt try to read too much into it. I practiced everything I could find on the internet for Reading comprehension. I made a 98 on that section. I also used the Tasp Study Guide or Thea study guide to practice the grammar and the reading. On the grammer I made a 89. We had quite a bit of grammar usage. It would have a sentence and you would have to determine whether the grammer used was correct. For instance, when to use Whom or Who. also, Past tense or present sentences. Ex. I go to the car or I went to the car. There are quite a bit of those and you can answer them by the sentences just not sounding correct. The study guide, I believe was very helpful. At one point they were testing the A & P portion and one of the girls remembered that some of the questions were in the study guide. Ex.: Which arteries supply blood to the heart? If you read the study guide, the answer is in there. I know the study guide doesn't offer many practice questions, but it does tell you what to study. If you can get on the internet, you can find so many different sites that have tests for reading, grammer and math. Thats what I did and I did great! You will too! I hope this helps. Let me know and Good luck!

Hi Daverica, Thank you so much for the info! What about medical terminology on the test? I have heard there is quite a bit on the test even though they do not use the A & P section. I am not sure if I should buy a medical dictionary to study terms. It sounds like you did a great job on the test. I hope to do that well! Did you get into the program?

Yes, I start Aug 28, the ADN Program. I am so excited. I did study quite a bit and it paid off. I have this obsession, if I dont know it, I will study till I do. I really had no idea what to expect. So I studied and studied. Its really basic. The study guide had information, but I wanted to know the format in which the questions where asked. No one could tell me. I did not have any medical terminology on the test. i cant imagine they would throw difficult terms at you before starting the program. Have you taken Med. terminology? Once again, i would definately go to the internet. check out this website. I am a visual learner, so this has pics to go with the words your learning. Try it before you buy a book.

http://ec.hku.hk/mt/ The medical dictionary is huge. All you need to do is learn prefixes, suffixes and roots. Just like in english and you can learn the meaning of the word. Try it! If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. I'm so happy I could help. What sections are they testing you on?

I heard that the vocabulary portion of the HESI was the most difficult of all the sections. But nobody will tell me what types of words I need to learn the definitions for :o . Will having had anatomy just previous to taking the exam help me at all? I'm taking the exam in January.

I have heard the same thing. We didnt have to take the vocabulary part, so I really couldn't tell you. The only thing I do know is that I have heard that the words that are in the study guide are not what they test you on. I would definately talk to past students and try to pry some information out of them. Someone has to know something. Good Luck! I can also ask one my friends. She took her test at ACC. Ausitin Comm. College. I will get back with you.

Sorry, didn't check date of post........

I bought the study guide and ordered the Morrison one. What a waste. I took the Hesi today thinking that I was prepared. I left with a score of 84. Needless to say I am devastated. I have a 4.0 and know that I won't get in the program.

Good luck to you.

I took the exam last year in Jan, it was the last date offered. My sister told me it was going to be hard. She gave me a xerox copy of the study guide that you can review at MCC library. in 2004 she took it and got a 87 and got in the program. I took the exam last year and got 92 and will be starting in March. I think it was not hard at all any educated being can pass with a good grade. You just need to know the basic math (elementary school), reading, grammar, and vocab. Just study from the study guide, don't even buy it just review it at MCC.

Good Luck!

linux7,

What subjects were you tested on? There are different HESI tests. I'm scheduled to take the HESI A2 in March which covers anat/physio, chem, vocab, rdg, and math. I need to score at least a 90 to be really competitive in the program I'm applying for. Tell me your secret! I also bought the HESI review guide and flashcards. But if your test didnt include chem and anat/physio thats totally different from my test. It seems like most people dont have to take the portion.

The program at in MCC in Michigan dose not test for AP and Chem. We only had vocab, reading, grammar and math. Math is very simple the stuff that you did in 1st to 5th grade (there is a soft calc in the testing software that you can use), reading is very simple just keep track of what you read and answer the question, grammar is also simple but can be tricky so just go over the errors that the book shows you. vocab is very simple top, its not medical terms but it is general english vocabs that doctors tend to use. The book dose a good job with the terms. AP and Chem part cant be that difficult. I would suggest reading your class notes and the review book.

I got a 93% and yes you probably want to do better then that as every year it becomes more and more difficult to enter a program.
