Need some advice on quitting school

Published

I need your loyal advice once again.

I am working 30 hours per week and bringing home 303.11 every two weeks. I just started a part-time job on the weekends that I work 12 hours. I get paid monthly at this new job.

My question is this.....my bills are getting further and further behind. I have no insurance on my car right now cause I cannot afford to make the payments. I quit eating out, I have not bought any clothes in over a year, I pinch and put every penny in a jar. My boyfriend has tried helping me, but now his bills are getting behind. I tried for a loan to consolidate. but the answer was no. Would you go ahead and quit for the fall semester, work 40 hours at my present job as well as the 12 on weekend and get caught back up, and apply to school in the spring. I need to make a decision soon to be able to withdraw from classes. My heart is saying "no", but that is not helping me with my bills. I love school. I made a 92 on my anatomy test yesterday and I was tickled to death!

Can somebody offer me some kind of advice...

Hissy:kiss

I tried financial aid, student services, and other places. Unless I have a child or some form of dependent they could not help me. I have prayed and prayed, but I feel like I need to get myself straightened out and try to put some money in the bank. I just have to take one day at a time I guess.

"You could always go the bankruptcy route"

It is MOST unwise to do a bankruptcy unless:

1) You have very substantial debts that are dischargeable (many kinds of debts are NOT), say $40,000 or more. AND

2) You are earning enough to stay WELL out of debt during the process as well as after the final court decision. (Otherwise, you are simply digging yourself a much deeper hole from which there will be no ready escape--not even the possibility of a bankruptcy, since you can do so only every 7 or 10 years.)

It is clear that you do NOT meet this second criterion (and perhaps not the first one either).

You might have to lay off school, or take part-time courses for a while, unless you can find a job that pays significantly more than minimum wage, which doesn't seem to presently be the case.

It is not the end of the world, regardless, just a delay in your plans.

Just wanted to say good luck with whatever your decision is.

Well, the decision came and I went to school this morning and withdrew. I have cried ever since I left school. Maybe it is for the best. I keep thinking that this is the second time I have tried to go to school and had to withdrew because of finances. Maybe GOD is trying to tell me something, but I am just not listening.

Guys I appreciate all of your words and encouragement.

GOD Bless you all.

How about contacting a local nursing agency and getting hired on as a sitter, they make good money, you will be able to study at the bedside, make more money and continue on in school. Just another option to think about. I personally would not quit school, once you do it will be really hard to go back. Don't use the credit cards, mail a minimum payment each month, if you can't you can't, I would not declare bankruptcy it could affect your hiring status, many employers check your credit history and if you have declared bankruptcy won't hire you.

I have always heard that God would not give you more than you can bear, I don't agree w/ dropping out.............it seems like that everything in your life that could go wrong, does go wrong when you try to go to school, but you have to press forward. The more money you make the more money you spend, don't think you'll ever get caught up on the bills unless you buckle down, and finish school..................just a thought

Hey Hissy,

I don't know if where you are if this is feasible, but in my area some hospitals are giving $ to aides and secretaries who are going back to school for nusing. My hospitaldoesn't have a very generous program, but it does give employees $2500.00 tuition re-imbursement for school. Maybe they have that type of program somewhere near you too. I feel so bad for you that w/ your grades you have to quit. I wish you all of the best and I hope you'll be writing on the bb that you're back in school and all straightened out very soon. God Bless!

Hissy, I hope you don't mind but after reading your post my innate need-to-help bell was ringing off the hook :) I REALLY want you to stay in school and your name was familiar. I came across this post from you during the summer. Please tell me this is not the reason you left; I want to see you make it!:

Relationship problem Post #1

I know there was a threat on this topic once before, but I just wanted some input.

Me and my boyfriend have been together for 10 years. Living together for about 3 years now. His daughter has been staying with us since June and she is planning on going back to her moms the middle of August. Me and him have been arguingin alot lately. Well, I listen, he argues. I was thinking about moving out and I told him that I found a house. A month ago, he went and borrowed $500 for me to help me get caught up on my bills. He said that I was a back stabber for doing this and leaving him like that. I asked him if he still has feelings for me and he said he did.

This past weekend, he threw up to me that if I quit school and do not return in the fall, that I have to find me a place to live. The reason I was looking to start with was on my last test, he said he could not go through another semester of what he went through the summer. That was the reason why I was not going to attend the fall semester.

He complained that all I do is study. The only time I can study is on Saturday and Sunday. I work 40 hours. On Saturday, I go to my study group (there is four of us) and we go the material over and over. I made a 101 on my last anatomy test! He told me that he did not know that I was going to be gone all day and that his daughter was home alone. She is 13. She is home alone during the week so what is the difference? He has never said anything to me before and is always encouraging me. If I do really good on a test, he will take me out to celebrate.

Am I being selfish? Should I move out? Finacially there would be no way unless I quit school. I love learning new things. Yes school is hard. I am having a 15 week semester into 10 weeks and I have to learn the material cause the teachers goes too fast.

I am sorry this is so long, but I truly feel some better by talking to someone.

What should I do?

KristinWW..no that was not the reason I quit school. I loved school. I am bringing home 606.22 a month. I have 250 funeral bill (moms), 300 car payment, 88 insurance, 25 doctor bill, 187 loan payment. That right there is 800 not including my other bills. It was a tough decision, but I

will be back.

The place I work does give me tuition reimbursement, but that goes towards the semester bill and what is left over, I use to buy my books.

I jus want to thank you guys for everything and all of your advice. I wish I could give you all a hug cause I really need one right now. Take care

Hissy :o(

I had to cut my hours and the bills were there but bills will be ther after you finish school. You have to decide what is important to work hard a short time which now because you are in school and it will not be forever or for the rest of your life struggling living from paycheck on a measly job? I can say I sacrifice a lot to have an education and I would do it again because there is nothing like working and being in demand for what you do despite the bad publicity nursing is getting these days.

Hissy,

Can't you defer your student loans? That's what I did and it helped a lot! I also have a car payment, so I know what that is like. My boyfriend is helping me pay it off, so I guess I am lucky. Can you take out student loans? I am already up to my neck in loans, and will be going up to my ears for my 2nd bachelors, but I figured it's worth it. Good luck to you!:)
