Need advice: Nurse Bullying

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello :)

I have been a nurse for about 10 months. I was working med-surg night shift and i fairly recently put in my transfer and started working telemetry days because it was run by the ER and i wanted to work my way up and get tele experience. I was hired as assistant charge on days and am cross training for ER. Ever since i put in my transfer the med-surge unit has been really rude to me. I have left and began my day job on another unit and i keep hearing about how "I will never make it on days, am too stupid, the boss hates me and won't want me back if i screw up"...Etc.I keep trying to ignore it, but i feel like it is constantly thrown my face. I have never had problems with coworkers..EVER.. I am always wanting to learn and offering to help start Ivs, etc. I really don't get it. Is this 'normal' for nursing"

I am not sure how to approach the situation

Thanks for your help in advance! :)

It sounds like they are insecure and jealous. Some nurses in med surg get an inferiority complex since they are lower on the hospital unspoken hierarchy.

Which I think is BS, I've worked many areas of nursing and have found out that your comfort zone is what you do a lot, and surg nurses are great multi taskers, and can easily learn other departments.

It's really odd to attempt to characterize ("is this normal?") an entire profession by one experience at one job.

This may be "normal" for this ER [sic ED]

This may be "normal" for those particular employees.

To attempt to cast a shadow over an entire profession due to one 10-month experience is definitely NOT normal.

I'm confused. If you have already left the med-surg unit, how is it that you are constantly "hearing" their criticisms?

Just ignore what you hear. It sounds like you have a pot stirrer who likes to keep things heated up. And, it's not bullying....immaturity on their part, jealousy perhaps, but not bullying.

Yes! This! My mom told me living well is the best revenge!

Forget about the negative people and do you!!

I have no idea what is "normal"

Like any occupation, some nursing units have a toxic culture.

From your description, med surg where you worked is populated by petty vindictive rude people.

I am surprised you didn't notice it when you worked there.

Thank you everyone for your advice!

It appears as you have achieved some success. There are some people that are jealous.

Certainly, you must continue to ignore rudeness, however.. it is also time to stand up to the haters.

Practice in front of the mirror, you've got this.
