Necessary to believe in God?

Okay, I did a search for GOD and came up with 200 pages of 5492 threads. Perhaps what I am looking for was somewhere in there, but WOW! The closest I have come were these posts which clearly show than an abundance of people DO believe in God:

I am curious about the number of people who do NOT believe in a traditional Higher Power.

What brought me to this was a recent theological discussion with my Jewish girlfriend. We are basically on the same wavelength (so I suppose thats good for us), where she believes in the God who created everything but doesnt care about what happens in the world, only about the outcome, (sort of like a science experiment), and I believe only in the POSSIBILITY of such an entity but not in the context of any organized religion which I have come across thus far. (Satanism is the closest I have found to what I believe, though even that seems to not be all encompassing. I do not prescribe to any religion so please don't get hung up on a particular reference or lack of here and miss the point of my question.)

I DO BELIEVE RELIGION IS NECESSARY TO MAINTAIN CIVILIZED SOCIETIES!!! I just have no faith in the whole omnipotent, omniscient, loving God thing to whom we should devote our lives, depriving ourselves of certain experiences that seem to be the very nature of our existence, spending time on our knees seeking guidance from and worshiping. I AM NOT CRITICIZING ANYONE FOR PRACTICING RELIGION!!!

My question is this: do you all feel it is necessary for a care provider to believe in and/or have faith in God or does it matter if he/she believes there might not be a second chance in "Heaven" and have only one FINITE life to live so therefore it is mandatory to ensure everyone gets the best possible chance to be happy and make our marks (so to speak) the only time around?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

It is getting a little redundant, isn't it?

I'm an agnostic.

I don't torture small animals

I don't steal

I don't write graffitti on the subways

I work hard and pay taxes

I take care of my family

I take care of and comfort the sick

I do volunteer work

I pay my parking tickets

I leave notes on cars I accidently bumped in the parking lot

My morality is internal taught to me by my parents.

No, it is not necessary to believe in God.

PS Agnostic/Atheists are not evil people...geesh

OK I think I have learned something this last 2 weeks. We all should never talk about weight, smoking, or religeous matters. We will never all agree and just keep trying to push forth our opinions on each other.

Why don't we change the topic to sex...I do VAGUELY remember it!

"We will never all agree and just keep trying to push forth our opinions on each other. " That's precisely why i only go so far where certain subjects are concerned.

No about discussing sex, because someone that is having hormonal or physical difficulties will have a problem with that one, too, maybe.:)

Besides, like Bedpan once said, closest i've been to that subject lately was discussing human reproduction in A and P. :D

I'd rather talk about abortion or guns. Now those are topics that we can talk about reasonably without shoving our opinions down each others throats, don't you think?

Two more subjects that people will have to agree to disagree on though. Plus any discussion i've ever had with it involved the same shove-down-throat approach, since people feel very stong on those opinions as well as the other touchy ones.

LOL ... good one 3rd shift guy!

Sex would be a good one you guys ... I vaguely recall what that is.

I didn't take it that way Red, but I have to agree with BluEyes, (thank you for elaborating; point well made). I believe the point of living for those of us that don't believe, (and I could be dead wrong about everyone else, but I know this is true for me), is because I do believe in something greater than myself. That just doesn't happen to be a god. I care about society and I care that thousands died seemingly needless deaths 2 years ago today (right about this hour as a matter of fact.) My question had more to do with whether that is necessary.

...definately going to have to agree to disagree on this one. Thanks for sharing your opinion. This is not a flame.

:)

I knew when I asked that plenty would disagree. I was mainly just curious about the majority of us that would be able to state why they disagree.

...NOW does that make sense? I hope so.

It does. Thank you. And I do agree with you that people should be able to focus on something beyond themselves otherwise we would be unable to remain civil.

I do not think it is necessary. I do know, only for me, I find such strength and comfort in my faith and I have prayed with a good number of clients suffering and during times of making hard choices with regard to health care and personnal stressors.

I had a really good conversation about something along these lines with my female married roommate yesterday. (She is married to my male roommate.) A little background: They are both Christian and she is very strong in her faith and she knows her stuff. (I can't stand when people claim to be of one particular religion or another, preach how everyone should convert, yet are unable to have an intelligent conversation about their faith and not resort to saying something like "God works in mysterious ways".) She is one of the few Christians who maintains a seemingly balanced objectivity about the rest of the world. She also holds a BS in animal veterinary, (i think thats right).

At any rate, the whole point is that I asked her something to the effect of who she would rather have as a care provider. "All other things being equal, education, experience, etc., I would prefer having someone who held the same religious values I do. After that, someone who at least believed in God would be preferential over someone who did not. Without a doubt I require that of my PCP but I don't think you CAN'T be a good nurse, doctor or whatever without believing, I just know myself well enough to know that this particular aspect in nearly any of my care providers would make me more comfortable. I believe one of the major aspects of healing is a faith in God."

I disagree wholeheartedly with that last sentence, but the rest of what she said makes complete sense and I've decided I am quite comfortable with that answer. Even though I know I am more than capable of healing someone physically, (given proper circumstances of course), I would never tell anyone I could (or would want to for that matter), heal them emotionally or spiritually. (Is that really what patients expect?) I'm certain their psychiatrist and clergy would be more than pleased to deal with any of those issues after the pt is capable of leaving the hospital alive.

HELLLLOOOOOO NURSE!! haha gotta be honest here, one of the original reasons I became interested in nursing (I'm sure thousands will think it immature, as do I), was because nurses are just ruthlessly SEXY! There have been plenty of other reasons since but that was one of the first.

hmmm, I also feel this way about female cops and marines (something about a woman with a gun and a restraining device!), but a nurse brandishing a stethoscope and a syringe, marching down the hall in that crisp, sharp looking, little white uniform, just aching to dole out a healthy dose of "How ya feeling today?" .... WOW!! Be still my V-Tach beating heart!
