Nclex results on hold due to speeding ticket..LONG!

When I was getting ready to graduate school in October, I had to fill out some paperwork to send to boards due to my first and only speeding ticket. The ticket was over $300 because I had listened to wrong advice and thought I was able to pay for my ticket once I went to reregister my car at the DMV ( I obviously know now that that advice was wrong, seeing as how they added about $400 onto the ticket). So I filled out the paperwork and sent in what I thought were the right documents.

The end of Jan I received a letter saying they wanted to know more about my ticket and the events that led up to it. I told them I took my 3 year old son to the snow for his birthday, and when we were returning home I got pulled over coming down the hill with about 5 other cars pulled over too (guess that's how the state is trying to make it's money), I obviously went into more detail than that though. I then sent the paperwork in again in early Feb.

I then took my Nclex PN on Feb 22 in California. I have been anxiously calling the BVNPT since 3.5 weeks post test to see when they mailed Feb 22 results (California does not have "quick results"). I called last Tuesday and was told Feb 22 were mailed that day, that I should have my results by "saturday". Saturday came and went along with monday. Tuesday I get a letter in the mail from BVNPT saying that they want documents saying all the fines were paid (I had had a payment arrangement with the court, I told BVNPT last letter that my ticket would be paid off in March and sent them the Feb letter from the court with my last standing balance. It showed I had been making payments). They also said they didn't want copies of my court documents, they wanted me to go to the court an hour and half away to get paperwork on my ticket.

I called the enforcement center and spoke with a lady asking how long after they got this new paperwork would I be able to get licensed (at this point I thought my test results were still on the way), she said they're two months behind. So yeah, two months from the moment they get my other paper work I should find out if I can be licensed. I went on to say that I can't believe that in an economy this bad that they wouldn't want to help our state out more by getting us off unemployment and into working positions. I have the education, skill and yearning to work. This is a ridiculous wait, I have served the military for five years and was given an honerable discharge. My FIRST and ONLY speeding ticket is taking five months to decide if I can be a licensed nurse?! Meanwhile I'm living off of unemployment and miliary disability until I'm given the go ahead to work as a nurse. The state board here in Cali really needs to do something different. Obviously the way they are running things now is too slow of a process and is only damaging our economy worse (I'm not all talk, even after I get my license I hope to be heard and will talk to whoever I need to talk to).

Anyway so after talking to the lady at the enforcement center, I called the BVNPT back and sat on hold for 30 mins, go through and then the lady accidently disconnected as we were saying hello. I called back, sat on hold another 30 mins go through and asked about my test results. I was then told I don't get my test results until the enforcement unit decides if I get my license or not. REALLY???!!!! Every other state has quick results. All we have is the "pearson vue trick" (according to that I passed) but I'd like to know for sure. SO basically I'm waiting four months to get my test results. Then when they decide I can have my license and send me my results, I have to pay $100 and wait another 3-4 weeks for my license.

Point of this thread: Is there any possible way that you know of to speed up this waiting process? I was thinking of driving to Roseville tomorrow where the court is that my ticket came from and then driving to the BVNPT enforcement center to turn in all documents and ask if they have what they need. Then perhaps try and speak to a manager, give them my sob story (single mom, military vet, unemployment ending this week). Has anyone tried going straight to the source before and not through mail? I don't know how I'm going to support myself and my son at this point. I went to school to better mine and my sons life and it seems to have slapped me in the face. Had I known this process would be taking this long I would have signed up for school to continue towards my RN. I could really use some stories from others who have gone through this in Cali and some encouragement. I'm at my breaking point.

Going to do this all in person is a very good option. I have gone to renew my license in person, and have heard of other nurses that did business concerning their licenses in person. The people seem to be a lot nicer and more efficient when you go in person instead of trying to do stuff over the phone. Good luck with the ticket hassle. I know someone who went through the same thing. I don't see the point in holding up a nursing license over a speeding ticket. I guess they want to insure that you don't get in a hurry to go to work in the state of California!

Thank you!

Well it appears as if the lady I spoke to at BVNPT was wrong about me getting my test results. They came in the mail today say I "PASSED". I am still on hold for my license until the ticket is resolved but at least I know now that I passed!

I don't understand what the big deal is. Traffic tickets are infractions---they aren't considered part of a criminal record. If I were you, I'd talk to both the court of record and someone at the state's board of nursing about this one.....can't see why they'd wait to issue a nursing license, unless being late paying your fine caused you to be charged with the more serious failure-to-pay, which is a misdemeanor.

Something along that line happened to me way back in the '80s; in those days, if people didn't pay their traffic fines on time, the court sent out a notice stating that an arrest warrant had been issued for them. Scary stuff!

I don't know if California still operates that way or not; as I recall, they didn't waste a lot of time and resources on picking up 'criminals' like me, as it was cheaper to send out threatening notices and wait for people to turn themselves in. Which is exactly what I did, and that resulted in the misdemeanor charge being dropped so I never did have to admit to anything worse than an infraction when I applied for my nursing license a decade later.

Good luck to you.....keep us posted.

Thank you. I'm not sure what I have. I never received a court date in the mail. All I received was a letter saying I owed like $600. I'm going to the court house tomorrow and I will keep you posted. I never got a ticket so I didn't know what I was supposed to do. I just assumed (dumb I know) that I'd get a fine in the mail and then pay it when I registered my car again.

I received my temp license last weds. It would have taken me two months but lets just say the lady was really nice who worked there.

My friend still works there and I can guarantee they are not purposely holding anyone up. They are swamped with the new reporting laws, people turning others in, the new fingerprint law because people use to lie on their renewals saying they had no convictions when they did and now with the new fingerprints, they are getting caught. Unfortunately, when your ticket went over 300, it was no longer a minor infraction. A ticket probably (more than likely but can't say for sure) won't deny a license but it has to go through the process by law. Whatever they are asking for is detailed by the law which they absolutely cannot bend. It is a good idea to go into the office but when I did work there years ago, I can tell you...people get much more of a good experience when they go in with a good attitude. It's only human nature if someone comes in yelling or complaining that your attitude back won't be exactly one where they want to go out of their way to help you. Not saying they will be rude, but perhaps not overly excited to put you ahead of others to help you out. When I was there, I heard everything from 10 people just died in the family, starving their children etc so going that route, doesn't usually get far. Just go in with your paperwork, tell them you are dying to find out your results and smile. You will be amazed how far you get. When I worked there and I know my friend said it's the same now, everyone there would rather see someone licensed and there is no one there who just loves to keep someone from getting licensed. (well, there were some who did hineous things that I think everyone wouldn't want them licensed). But it's definitely not the mentality of seeing who they can keep out. It's just a matter of being swamped. She just told me they have just hired 12 new people in enforcement lately which should tell you something since all the layoffs, furloughs that they have the workload to justify around all of that. Good luck, smile even when you don't feel like it (I'm a hothead and get very frustrated with customer service sometimes when I don't feel like I'm getting what I want so I know it's hard).

OOps after all that typing, I see you got a temporary. People there aren't as terrible as it seems : ) I'm also thinking but may be wrong since you said you filled out your paperwork and then got the notice about the ticket that perhaps you checked no on the form that asked about convictions and it showed up on the fingerprint report? That's a huge no no and one that needs to be explained. (I may be wrong here, but kind of sounded like what happened). I always use to tell people, when in doubt, check yes and explain.

Just a hint....when renewing, always make sure all boxes are checked, send in at least 4- 6 weeks prior to your expiration date to the street address (not the PO BOX) and send it certified so you know they received it. When I worked cashiering, can't tell you how many people sent it in 1 day before their license expired and needed their new license so they could work the next day.

Happy nursing and enjoy!

The only way you are going to find out is to communicate with them. No one at this site can speak to your specific case. Call or go in person.
