I got a letter yesterday about being honored does or have anyone else got one of these. I haven't heard about this and was wondering.

the real deans list sends u a letter from the dean of ur department or something and says congratulations, i got one of those. never heard of a national deans list, cuz that would be extroardinarily large with lots of people.

I am on the list but never paid for anything. It's nice to add to your resume.

I get one every year, I think it's stupid and I always throw it away personally.

funny how it said that only "1/2 of 1%" of college students get nominated. couldn't they said 0.50% instead? are we too stupid?:rotfl:

The National Dean's List IS real, and IS legitimate. It's been around for ages.
I was listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students for three years. Big deal.
I also belong to Phi Theta Kappa (which is Phi Beta for junior colleges) and the Golden Key International Honour Society. All of which I thought was a big deal at the time. They’re not scams, they’re legit. (When you get OUT of college, unless you're Phi Beta Kappa - which I missed by only a few hundredths of a point - I've not seen that anyone really cares.) The main reason we paid for me to be listed and published in high school was because they ask for that kind of stuff of college applications. I'm a lifetime member of Golden Key and Phi Theta, and I still list it on "Academic Honors and Affiliations" on applications, because it is. I too was nominated to the National Dean's List, but I didn't buy a book. But I can and do legitimately say, "nominated to National Dean's List" and put the years.
It seems logical to me that if you WANT a book, you should have to pay for it. We did, because like I said, we all thought it was a big deal when I was in high school. And I had to pay a membership fee for the others (just like Beta Club dues and National Honor Society dues in high school). This stuff's not cheap anymore; I can imagine what it costs to print a book now.
Not everything is a scam, but caution is a good idea.
I agree. How pretentious does academia have to get?

I bought the book last year and had my photo & biography published, but have no desire to buy a book this year. On my nomination letter, it said buying a book or adding a photo & biography was optional, every thing else would be published at no cost.

I list my info, but don't buy. I get soooo many of those letters. However, anything sent from my school goes in my folder. The only thing that I'm invited into that I will join will be Sigma Theta Tau.
