name that hospital and its starting salary

Published

Heya everyone,

So I plan on graduating nursing school in May 2010 in NY and am looking to possibly move to philadelphia, I'm hoping by that time the economy has bounced back and more places are hiring. I was wondering if people could tell me about the hospitals in the city or surrounding area and the starting salary and whatever other fun/useful facts you may know. Thanks!:heartbeat

Specializes in ER, OR, PACU, TELE, CATH LAB, OPEN HEART.

Ever been to TEMPLE Philanurse74????????? $40 an hour seems low to me!!!! I make that in community ERs in Maryland. Would take $60-75 to get me at Temple again. I went there in the 70's didn't think a thing about taking the EL. HELL NO, not today.

Why yes, I have. I was questioning a starting salary of 40 an hour. Not doubting some experienced nurses make that wage, but not to start. I happen to have been very impressed with their care in the CICU when family was there. Yes, it's in a rough neighborhood, but can give EXCELLENT care, regardless.

Specializes in Abdominal Transplant.
Those would be LPN rates in the Pittsburgh region.

On the UPMC website, rn starting wage is ~17/hr

I remember a very close friend RN who work for Medical Staffing Agency in 1980 and work PEDS at Temple on Evening Tour and was paid $28/hr and it was a rough area even the security guards were afraid to walk her to her car.So at the end of each shift a security guard would drive her to her car at 11:30 PM. She was saving money for her wedding and paying for her BSN at very expensive Private College at that time in her life.

I know of a family member with a BSN that after two years at UOP was making $44/hr Day shift this was in 2007.

I remember graduating during the last nursing crunch (1996 to be exact). I moved from Binghamton, NY with big plans - - - eventually found a very low paying RN job at a little LTC facility where I made peanuts - - - BUT it was better salary than the Home Health AIDE job I took to make ends meet (all with my nice new license in hand). I also highly suggest having the job offer before the move!

Specializes in PICU now, Peds and med-surg in the past.
I don't know about Philly..

Allentown (about an hour away)

Definately can't be true starting RN salaries as I started at one of those hospitals 6 years ago at $19/hr

When i interviewed at St. Luke's in August/Sept 2008, RN's starting wage was $23/hr. The poster's rates for all those hopitals above are off.

I'm pretty sure that's wrong or was the starting salary many years ago. When I started at Lehigh Valley Hospital in 2006, I was started at $22/hr and when I passed my NCLEX, I got a $1/hr raise. My friends who started at St. Lukes at the same time had a similar starting hourly rate to me in 2007.

Non-union jobs in Philly are starting around $27.30 an hour. Oddly enough, union jobs in NJ pay more, around $28.50. I don't know about Temple, which is the only RN-unionized hospital in the city, as far as I know.
