My two least favorite words

Published

"Nurse's discretion"

Translation: we have no intention of giving you any guidance, so you're on your own, but if a family member doesn't like something you said or did, we're totally going to yell at you.

Specializes in LTC/Skilled Care/Rehab.

lactulose

ok that is only one word but I know I'm in for a long shift if my patient is on lactulose and needs bathroom assistance or a bed pan.

"chest pain"

not something you want to hear a patient complain of

Specializes in Oncology, Triage, Tele, Med-Surg.

"frequent flyer"

Specializes in Staff nurse.
"Code 7" when you just walk off the elevator with your coat on.

"Golytely" Well that is one word but it makes me cringe everytime I hear it.

Yep, nobody goes "lightly", lol!

Strangely enough those are two of my favorite words.

Translation "nurses deal with this problem a lot more than I do so I'm leaving up to your superior experience to manage the problem within what I consider medicaly safe boundries"

Specializes in Med-Surg, Psych.

Charge Nurse.

Means you get blamed for anything that goes wrong during the shift, even if you had no support from management.

My least 2 favorite words is when a patient says to me "I fell".

another one is :madface::madface:"short staff":madface::madface:

"difficult family"

Specializes in Med surg, Critical Care, LTC.

Least fav words "Code Blue"

Favorite words "Have a nice weekend!"

Specializes in NICU Level III.
My LEAST favorite phrase: (said by one of the NICU divas to me, working in the intermediate nursery) "Well, they're just feeder/growers."

Like, you don't think they can get sick and die? Wanna bet?

feeder/growers are sooo much more time consuming than level III kids, IMHO.

my least favorite words...seen by myname on the assignment sheet - "first admit"

Specializes in NICU Level III.
7 pm

Meaning it's time to go to work.

I like 7 am

Meaning I get to go home and get some sleep after being up all night, so please do not call me at 1300 and ask me if I was sleeping. I don't call you at 0100 and ask you if you were sleeping do I.

NO KIDDING.

I put my cell phone on alarm only and unplug my landline when I am in between shifts. There is NO way to get in touch with me to 430pm and I tell whoever calls from work that when I return their voice mail hours later. I need my sleep ..and DO NOT even think about calling me asking me to do OT that night when I'm ALREADY ON THE SCHEDULE. UGH. :nono:

Specializes in Critical Care.

Restraint charting

Mandatory meeting

Pharmacy's gone(we don't have a 24 hr pharmacy at our facility. I suppose the patient can only be sick between the hrs of 7am and 8pm. Otherwise, they'll have to wait until morning)

New admit

Drug overdose

Educational opportunity(to enhance my job performance cuz I didn't do your stupid paperwork right the first time cuz I was more concerned with taking care of the patient?)

Bowel obstruction(can't stand the projectile emesis/fecal matter coming from places where fecal matter should never be)

psych patient(Sorry, I would NOT make a good psych nurse)

telemetry overflow

Crazy family(like I have time to deal with that?)
