"Nurse's discretion"

Translation: we have no intention of giving you any guidance, so you're on your own, but if a family member doesn't like something you said or did, we're totally going to yell at you.

I like 7 am

Meaning I get to go home and get some sleep after being up all night, so please do not call me at 1300 and ask me if I was sleeping. I don't call you at 0100 and ask you if you were sleeping do I.

Feeder/growers are those babies who just need to figure out how to eat a little better, grow a little more, and manage all of those systems together, before they can go home.

I have a friend who her first and only child died due to this - not being a nurse in that arena, when I read up on it - it's mainly a preemie illness, correct? It's also preventable and rare?

Mainly a preemie illness, yes. Preventable... well, that's not clear. Since we have no real idea what causes it, it's hard to prevent. There are about a million and twelve theories, and steps you can take to reduce the risk (not feeding a baby who is cold, or on prostaglandin, or a few other things) but I don't know that it's *preventable*. Sometimes you do everything right, and it still strikes. We've had kids go from getting car seat tested for discharge to dead in twelve hours. It's a scary, scary thing.

UGH! Why does that never go both ways? "Oh, I thought you'd be up by now." Um, no. Just because my SHIFT ended 8 hours ago doesn't mean that I'm done sleeping. Do you get out of work at 5pm and go straight to bed? I'm guessing you go home, make dinner, feed the cat, read the paper, do some laundry, watch TV, pack your lunch for tomorrow, etc., then get to bed around 10 or 11. I did all those things when I got home from work, meaning I got to bed at about 10:30am. Your phone call at 2pm will NOT make me happy, and your half-assed apology doesn't help. [/rant]
