I know in order for me to be competitive with other students to get into a program, I need A's and B's. Unfortunately, I got C's in 3 of my major classes Physiology, Microbiology, and Anatomy. I asked my counselor if I could take those classes again and she said "Do not take them again". She told me if I did take them again, it would look bad and told me just move forward. But, i've seen a couple old post from members here telling people to take your C's over again.
So, if i can't take any classes over then how do i improve my chances of getting into a program? I was thinking about applying to every community college program I can anyway. I was also thinking about going to a LVN program and once I finish that I will do an LVN to RN bridge program.
I really want to be a nurse but i feel confused about my situation right now:eek: . Should I just talk to the dean of my school and tell them i need to take these classes again or should i just go with my original plan?
By all means, retake the classes and prepare yourself to enter other programs that don't have these restrictions. The time you waste fiddling around with this school could be keeping you from being accepted at another school. If you do nothing, you won't be competitive at another school, and these people have no vested interest in seeing that you make the cut at this particular school. Time is money when it comes to nursing school. Maximize your time by making yourself competitive.
Is there a school in your area that takes all applicants on a waiting list basis as long as they fulfill the criteria i.e. high school bio and chem, minimum of C in college courses, etc.?! If yes, I would get myself on a waiting list for these schools immediately. They are your best bet. They also wipe out the need to re-take classes you already passed. The C wouldn't be a factor in this case.
If you only have schools where you need to be accepted then I would suggest talking to a nursing advisor. I bet they tell you to re-take these courses. If you take them elsewhere you could submit these courses to a new school if they are the only ones that are applicable to the nursing program. You could leave the other transcript out of the equation completely as your most recent grades would be the only ones that apply.
The reason my counselor said I shouldn't take my classes again is because my community college admits people into the program by a point system. Every time you retake classes it lowers your points.
if they actually added your points for you then it may be true that retaking would hurt your score more than the higher grade would help. it really depends on how the point system works.
This may sound harsh, but I think it would be a good idea for all colleges to not allow re-taking (probably won't happen as they get money from students retaking class, which then takes up spots for people waiting for classes). yes, nursing school is competitive. Everyone knows this going in. This is why you should give your all every time. of course taking a class again will result in a better grade. You have already learned it once!!! It is total review!! It isn't fair for all of the people waiting to take pre requisites. If anything, schools should only allow people to re-take if there are spots left after registration of everyone else.
Listen, I was in the same situation. all my sciences I had C's and then my math and english I had B's. so my GPA averaged to a 3.3
I applied to a bunch of schools and finally got into 3 of them and chose one. and I finished.
so do what you gotta do. keep trying if not, then you have the LPN option.
I am not sure what your admission policy is, but if your goal is to improve your overall GPA to offset the C's and you absolutely cannot retake the science courses over, I would take a couple of random "easy" courses to improve the G.P.A.
I know that they might be looking specifically at these science courses - and their grades, in that case ignore what I said - but if you just want a better GPA, this could help you
Also, even with repeating a course where a D or F is earned; many cases, they are factored in together... (My friend) got an F in one course, repeated and got an A-, but factored together was about a C.
To make it even worse, sometimes the combined grade includes the combined units so a 4 unit F combined with a 4 unit A works out to be an 8 unit C.
OP, I think your best bet is to find a school that admits by lottery or by waiting list.
You should only retake the classes AFTER you have spoken to nursing advisors at each of the schools you want to apply to and have been told that it is a good idea to take the classes again. Many people have already stated that each school has their own guidelines on retaking courses, and it would be a shame to waste time and money retaking classes that may not improve your chances of being accepted. Be well informed before you make a decision.

My counselor told me that i could re-take those classes but i would have to talk to the dean and she completely brushed off the idea of me doing that.
Im thinking of talking to the dean of my school and make a request to take a few of those classes. Then I will just have to apply elsewhere if they feel that it would affect my chances at applying at their school. What do you think?
