My RN venture ended today.

Just when I thought I was going to be prepared for my exam this week on hematology and oncology. On Monday AFTERNOON, our instructor just happened to mention (via e-mail) that she "forgot" to add a 60-page chapter on Breast Cancer and added 26 NEW lab values that we had to know for our exam today.

Then when we had lecture on Tuesday...she never bothered to cover the the Chapter on Breast Cancer nor another chapter we had on Shock at all.

I had clinicals all day on Wednesday and a night class on Wednesday night...so instead of reviewing my material like I had planned...I had to cover NEW material for an exam whose reading assignments and objectives have been in our Syllabus since August.

That proved to be a devastating error on her part as I am now mathematically too far behind to pass unless I get a perfect score on each test from here on out, and that is impossible to do.

I sent my children to my sister's house for tonight. I just can't deal with anything more right now. I have no idea of what I am going to do and there is no way I want to re-apply to this nursing program. These are the worst instructors I have ever had in my life.

I am sorry for what you have had to go through. Have you gone far enough to do something about finishing on line?

I have heard that there are Nursing programs that can be done on line and then you do clinical at a hospital of your choice.

There must be a way not to let all that education go to waist.

Perhaps challenge an LPN Registry exam or something. macspuds

Awesome! Inspiring! Woohoo!

Congrats. You have a wonderful Dean. Some Deans would have taken sides with the instructor, they obviously have an agenda. I know of one at a school in Tallahassee, florida. She was a real under dog and I prayed that God allow the president of the university to see the hypocrite she has become and God answered my prayer. They threw this Dean out of the school like a spoiled mango. Amen! Prayer changes things!

Good for you!

A classmate and I were accused of copying each other's care plans by an instructor whose propensity towards presumptiousness far outweighed her ability to teach.

Well, guess who got the boot instead?

You got it. :D

YEA!!!! I'm so glad you kept us posted. It sounds like there are going to be some changes for those incoming 3rd semester students. Even if not this coming semester, your Dean seems to be wondering why this is more of a problem this semester. I wager to think you probably helped many students for the next few years. Good luck to you.

Good job, very glad to hear you are back in.

Keep fighting the good fight!

congratulations on getting back in the program!! best of luck to you!!

Awesome news! Best of luck to you!

Earlier this year, when I was having a problem with a clinical instructor, and we left after waiting for 20 minutes (she was usually at least 45 minutes late), you posted to me: "Personally, I think the action was childish and cowardly."

I'm not sure your action of impulsively withdrawing from the program was much better.

I hope now you see that us nursing students have to stick together. When there is a serious problem with the instructor, you have every right to take action, and sometimes our emotions get the best of us.

I am so glad you were able to meet with the dean, and let her know very objectively what is going on. And I'm really happy for you that you are back in the program with the Dean on your side. When you walk in with a solid reputation (and the grades to back you up), and have written documentation, they really must listen! I hope your fellow students will stand behind you and press on for a change in the program.

I hope things improve for you, and wish you continued good luck!

Hi,

I just read your thread today and was glad you decided to go to the Dean and get enrolled in the class again. :yeah: I just graduated in May from a BSN college, so your comments about instructors were right on target! Just because someone has a MSN doesn't mean that they can TEACH. I had a few instructors like that. Anyone can stand up in front of class and read a powerpoint! I don't know your history, but I will say again to "hang in there". Continue to do your absolute best and look forward to the end of the road.:):) When you graduate, everyone will know how hard you worked and what you sacrificed to get your degree. Your family will be so proud of you. Think of this as just another "hoop to jump through". My husband told me that many times and it worked. Best of luck to you!!!:nurse:

Honey, that is great! Just learn from this experience. In the nursing profession you are going to have ups and downs. The only advice that I can offer, now that this is all over, is to next time, go home, take a deep breath and regroup before jumping the gun. Just slow down and take it easy on yourself. It's the same while working as a nurse. You are going to run into good nurses and bad nurses as well as other coworkers. In our state, we can follow the chain of command when there is a problem with our schools. Then, if we get no results, we can write to our state boards of nursing where they are closely monitoring the nursing programs in our state. Our school is actually on probation for low NCLEX pass ratios. You can look this up on your state's board of nursing websites to see how well your school or any other school is doing. Usually, students are afraid to go to anyone to get help for fear of retaliation. Just stay calm and cool headed and follow the correct chain of commands to get results. Thanks to you, you have helped many others by going to the dean. The other advice that I can offer is to get a good study guide that covers each area of nursing and use it when you get stumped. There are tons of review books for NCLEX that have chapters on each medical problem ie respiratory, cardiac, cancer, peds, ect. I used the Saunders and it really helped me. I had some instructors that simply read straight out of the book on our CD lectures and I had to do a lot of researching on my own to get through nursing school. I had so many web sites I used as well as books. I had to spend some extra money but it paid off. Your family and friends will understand that right now, you just have to concentrate on your school and career and when it's all over, there is plenty of time for them. My teenagers and spouse and family kept asking me to do things with them and I got so frustrated at them because they knew but when it was all over, they understood when I finally got back to being myself. And one final note, I was on the Dean's list with my grades until I actually started the nursing courses. That happens to the best of us so don't let that get you down. If you are not doing well on tests, then try something different on studying. I was not doing so well in the very first class and I had to do my own research to figure out how to understand what they wanted. It all paid off. I finished LPN school with only a "C" average but I passed my boards just recently and I'm learning to be an LPN now. Just because I only made a "C" doesn't mean I'm going to be an awful nurse. And some of us are awful test takers but great nurses. Just keep your head up and keep holding it up and keep going. Don't let any obstacles take this away from you. It's just like anything else you want really bad, keep your eye on the goal and you'll make it. Now, get back to studying and show the Dean that you can DO IT!!!:yeah:

I have to say I'm outraged! We are in the midst of such a nursing shortage & we try to make it even harder to get through the course. Many years ago I had the same problem, I was given a 50% for a term paper (a pass was 80% I knew I didn't deserve that mark I asked for it to be remarked by an independent 3rd party alonf with 3 other papers all with no name on them. The college instructor refused, I went to the Dean of admissions he approved it as my Grade point was 3.91. The Instructor refused untill I brought in a lawyer & the threat of a lawsuit!!You are paying for this program in essence these Instructors are working for you! See a lawyer if all else fails. If there is documented evidence of incompetencies go after them on terms they will understand. Remember they will not want the unflattering notice & notify your state College of Nurses as they set the standards for Nursing practice.:nurse:
