Just when I thought I was going to be prepared for my exam this week on hematology and oncology. On Monday AFTERNOON, our instructor just happened to mention (via e-mail) that she "forgot" to add a 60-page chapter on Breast Cancer and added 26 NEW lab values that we had to know for our exam today.
Then when we had lecture on Tuesday...she never bothered to cover the the Chapter on Breast Cancer nor another chapter we had on Shock at all.
I had clinicals all day on Wednesday and a night class on Wednesday night...so instead of reviewing my material like I had planned...I had to cover NEW material for an exam whose reading assignments and objectives have been in our Syllabus since August.
That proved to be a devastating error on her part as I am now mathematically too far behind to pass unless I get a perfect score on each test from here on out, and that is impossible to do.
I sent my children to my sister's house for tonight. I just can't deal with anything more right now. I have no idea of what I am going to do and there is no way I want to re-apply to this nursing program. These are the worst instructors I have ever had in my life.
Hopeful -
How did the meeting with the dean go? I so hope you got resolution. Personally, I would have fought like heck BUI I completely understood you when you talked about watching a movie with your twins. I am a single parent of a 3 yr old and while I am doing this as much for her as I am for me, she pays a pretty big price.
Please update us on the results of your meeting.

Thank you!
My meeting with the Dean went extremely well. I took all of the work that I do, showed her exactly what I do to prepare for the exams. I did this b/c I am sure alot of people claim that they study but she doesn't know if they are or not...that way she could see how much time and effort I am putting into the class.
I was expecting her to just hear me out, but that isn't what I got. She was very, very interested in what I had to say. I showed her my documentation of things being posted at the last minute, the notes that were recycled from last year, how disorganized they were, etc.
She listened to everything.
When we were finished I said, "I am not alone. There are tons of students that work just as hard, just as much as I do, that have good GPA's that are failing this class and that just shouldn't be. We can't do it ourselves...we need to be met half-way and I don't feel that we are getting that from the last couple of instructors that we have had."
She told me it had been a long time since a student came and sat down with her to bring her what I did. She said that it gave her a better idea of what has been going wrong this semester. She said, "Third semester has always been a challenge...but not like it is this year."
I just said, "I know that ultimately that this is a personnel issue and you can't comment on it...however, I strongly feel that we need something to offset what has happened because there are some students right now that are so far behind that it's not possible for them to catch up with the way things stand right now."
So that is where we left it. She called the Registrar and had them put me back into the program, I went to class and clinicals this week and I'm going again today.
She said, "When something comes down the pipe...you'll know about it".
Wonderful. It sounds like she appreciated your honest feedback. Sounds like you did a big favor to yourself and classmates.
Does your school offer nursing tutors, my school does ( for free!) and I think that helps some students who struggle with a concept . If not you might look to hire one.
Best of luck with schooling and thanks for keeping us updated.
That kicks ass, congratulations!! There are not enough people who stand up for themselves these days - especially when it comes to terrible instructors, or any instructor for that matter.
Congratulations again! You did the right thing, and I'm sure you have inspired others to stand up for what is right. :)
Bet you didn't realize you used the nursing process in your interactions with the dean!
Noted a concern/problem :
"good students over 50% flunking test"
Assessed reasons:
late notification of material AFTER course outline posted
tested on material not assigned for test
reviewed study material in prepration for test
Intervention:
Compiled information supporting concerns
Made appt with Dean
Professionally presented case --no whine/bitter comments
Evaluation/Outcome:
Nursing Class reinstatement
Dean has needed info to make changes/ provide corrective action plan.
:yeah:
Hope all is well.
Just wanted to share with you, my first psych professor told us that it took her damn well near 10 years to get her bachelors. She said if anyone told her at that time that she would get her PhD she would fall over laughing. There she was, in the flesh ...a lady in her 50s with her PhD

It is unfortunate your program is so tough...not many of them out there are easy. You made a good decision. The nursing profession is harder than the schooling!!!
