My first day

Specialties Home Health

Published

Today was my first day as a home health nurse.

I only did the orientation thing but tomorrow I go out to see pts.

I'm really looking forward to this new part of nursing.

I'll be hanging out here a bit more these days.

Wonderful!! Rusty, I think you will be great at it!

I started HH five weeks ago and love-love-love it. I am temporarily off work for 8 - 10 weeks on medical leave. So share your stories!!

Yes, do give us updates!! And you can also post it on the TYpical Day thread, so those who are thinking about HH can see what it is really about.

Ditto !

Please fill us in... am interested as well. Always like to keep my options open. Just have always been a bit leery due to all the medicare restraints and BS involved... would definately like to hear more.

Enjoy !

Best of luck! Hope you enjoy it.

Hope you enjoy your new job . I am sure you'll be great!

Good luck to you.... hope you enjoy it. Keep us posted on how it goes :)

well, went to this one ladies house and spent most of my time explaining why the regular nurse wasn't there. But she finally settled down and let me take some vitals and draw a tube of blood and as I was leaving she said "You are a very nice young man".

My second pt was this HOH diabetic with a foot ulcer.

He had this box of donuts next to his easy chair.

I documented "Instructed pt on importance of being compliant with diet".

Only 2 pts today. More tomorrow.

Sounds like your getting a good introduction!

Check out some of our previous posts re wound care---TONS in home care and understanding OASIS---even though you will not be responsible.

Regnurse, nothing serious I hope.

Rusty, the first thing I had to do when I started home health was bone up on advanced wound care skills. Now, I can honestly say I know more than most doctors do! (Have had a G.P. ASK ME to TELL HIM what to write as a wound care order! At least he was humble enough to admit he didn't know!)

Right now my company is doing a pilot project on Best Practices in Wound Care, focusing on leg ulcers. It's great to know you're on the cutting edge.....now, if I could ONLY get more practise in applying those blasted Profore dressings!!

Specializes in Transplant.

I am looking to start in home health? It seems you have been doing it for a while. I love hearing that you love what you do because as it stands now, I have to drag myself out of bed to go to work. I left bedside 4 years ago and did not realize how much I would miss it. I am looking to come back but not on the level that I left ( I worked in a surgical trauma ICU).

Thanks for just sharing how nice HH can be.

Disabled nurse: YIKES!!! Sorry I have not answered you!

(Twenty lashes with a wet tourniquet)

Not serious as in "life threatening". I had my rt ankle operated on and reconstructed. I had an "osteochondrial defect" (Whew!) and a large cyst on top of the tallus that the tib-fib sat upon and irritated. Also had a bone chip fragment floating around and terrible scar tissue and arthritis in the joint. Surgeon put in artificial bone, took out the other junk. Casted for 5 weeks. I just got into a knee-high boot-cast that I'll wear for 3 weeks then PT.

So....4 more weeks before I can return to work! Gads......they will have to retrain me!
