Hi everybody,
I have a question and PLEASE dont anybody blast me for typecasting, this was not MY statement, it was a LCSW I was friends with. She claims that a huge % of nurses are first born females of alcoholic fathers. Something to do with the fact that as the first born in dysfunction family of origin you are a caregiver from the get-go. Now my father was not an alcoholic, but I am a first born. I was wondering how many of us are first-borns. (Also, she said this to me a long time ago, and I have lost touch with her, so I cannot ask her where the heck she got her information was) I was just starting school at the time and didnt really fight with her about it, just kind of gave her one of the Hmmm, thats an interesting opinion.... answers. Also, she meant it as a compliment, that we take a difficult beginning and build on our strengths and turn them into a career.
So, how many first borns are out there?
KristyBRN
9 children in my family--I am # 7 and a nursing student
I have one sister (#4) who is an RN
I also have two brothers (# 6, #9) who are RN's
....all with an ETOH Dad and emotionally absent Mother!.....
Another one of my brother's (#3) daughter (1st born) is an RN --definitely no ETOH there.
BTW - my two RN brothers are married to RN's who are both 1st borns with ETOH Dad's
anyone tallying up yet?? would love the results :)
See the poll for the numbers
https://allnurses.com/forums/f118/rns-mostly-first-born-alcoholic-fathers-194487.html
and keep in mind that neither this thread nor the poll can hope to be even marginally accurate because they are limited by the selection of people who choose to respond AND by the limited population of nurses who come to allnurses. Neither should be used to make sweeping generalizations about "most RNs".
There are a lot of generalizations that could be made
Most RNs were abused
Most RNs marry alcoholics
Most RNs marry paramedics or police officers
Most RNs are codependent
Most RNs like the color purple
Most RNs have curly hair
Considering the large population of RNs out there, I'm sure you could find some that would identify themselves with one or more of the above. If you chose to put the question out there and 100 people read it, 5 identified with it and chose to respond, 5 disagreed with it and chose to respond, and 90 passed it by, your results would look like 50% of people identified with the question, but in truth only 50% of respondents agreed, which means, well...very little.

lol not looking for hgh grade reports on this - just wondering what the thread results were. i thinmk we can most of us agree that "most" would not be a good word to use- just looking at it as an interesting theory - not an exact science test. thanks for the link

First born, father wasn't alcoholic but he was always right like one and ruled the roost (physician). I married a rip-roaring alcoholic for some reason. I think a lot of nurses marry someone like that.
