School Nurse's, I would like to know what frustrates you with your job as a School Nurse?
Me......Parents who bring in an inhaler for their child to use, because of severe asthma, and the box the inhaler comes in reeks of cigarette smoke >>>>>
So what get's to YOU ?
Oh my gosh, I think your student's mother is one of the teachers at my school! "I just heard about this scary new virus, WHAT are YOU doing to keep our kids healthy?!" Well for one thing I'm not scaring them half to death . . .And now that there's a confirmed ebola in Texas, I just know I'm going to have teachers convinced someone here has it. Because, y'know, Virginia and Texas share a lot of border area.
OMG I had a teacher almost tackle me as I came in my office this morning ranting and raving about Ebola and that it will reach California in a week. I just stared at her. All I could do from rolling my eyes so hard I would get a migraine or laughing. I calmly explained that Ebola is not a NEW virus and doesn't spread like in the movies. When it reaches the Arizona border come back and see me K. Just wash your hands.
I took a student that had been hit in back of head with basketball, passed out in locker room, c/o numbness & tingling in all ext., with nausea, and unable to get parents..... ER dr didn't think I should have called 911 and made statement a couple of times that all I do is "put on bandaides". I'm sure he would have felt different if it had been one of his children, which are both at my school.

So, the funny thing is . . . . . the information about avoidance is the same for flu and everything else. Wash your hands. Stay home if you are sick. Etc.
The school nurse does not have a magic wand.
Of course a child died today . . . . and the way it is presented is the child had enterovirus D68.
First US child dies from enterovirus D68
Then you get into the body of the story and you find the child also had a staph infection. And you find that there is no link, as of yet, between the virus and the paralysis some kids get.
How about how many kids die from the flu or from pertussis? Way more. And people won't get their kids immunized.
Yet they'll get all hysterical over this. When there is no way to prevent it except hand washing.
I'm not looking forward to work tomorrow.
Epi-pen pricing is all over the place. Full price for a 2 pack is $311, I paid $34 with insurance (last week) and the coupon saves you $100 on the 2 pack (not sure if it can be used with insurance).
EpiPen coupons can be used with insurance EXCEPT government plans--Medicare, Medicaid and its varieties, Tricare. I work in allergy so we're filling those forms out for school all the time. If we dx a food/insect allergy I always ask if there's an EpiPen/Auvi Q and write a new rx for it. You'd be surprised how many people don't believe in food allergies. I had a friend THIS WEEK feed their food allergy child various dairy products to see if their toddler had outgrown the milk allergy! NO NO NO!

I had a very nice mom tell me her insurance won't pay for an epi-pen and so she was wondering if it would be ok not to send one to school with her highly allergic-to-bees son?
Anyone have this experience - that insurance won't cover at least part of the epi-pen?
