Is it really a disease, or are they deluded? Who knows?
New to this service. I've been a working nurse for close to 30 years and I'm still alive! Eek!There IS some strange skin condition going on and not just the eczema or psoriasis (who knows what actually causes these conditions, anyway?) I've been following the unfolding of the strange skin issue and feel that it may lead to some pretty profound infectious problems in the health care field. I hate dealing with skin rashes as much as anyone as there are rarely any definitive causes. Contageous? Disguised scabies, lice? Itching has aways been synonymous with issues like insects, parasites, poor hygiene, poverty, exposure to toxic chemicals, bacteria, viruses. It's not like we nurses haven't been exposed to any of these conditions! I've worked in the 3rd world and have been bit by strange insects, caterpillars . . . converted tb tine test after working with the poor. Our environment is ever changing and we've used so many antibiotics/pesticides (poisons) we've created resistant bacteria and viruses - we really don't have to look to MARS or outerspace aliens to bring it to us. Look at MRSA ! (An anacronym to be sure! LOLOL) The lice laugh at Kwell/lindane/pyrethrins. Who knows what toxic brain/body damage parents are doing to their children by repeated applications these poisons on their children? Science and the drug companies create new strange creepy entities every minute! DONT GET ME ON THE TOPIC OF DRUG COMPANIES! There is no magic pill, just costly more pills!
The issue here is that medicine is left investigating inside a box of time restraints and money and are led by the nose by wrong assumptions to bad conclusions. What ever happen to good old scientific curiosity, a great mystery to be solved and the desire to help with an individual's suffering????? Skin problems carry so many stigmas. . Don't be so hasty in judging!! Not too long ago science told us all bacteria was killed in the stomach by hydrochloric acid--- well, H Pylori . . . .
Yes, H Pylori...It will be interesting to watch what happens with Morgellons. In the mean time, that's a heck a of lot of folks that are delusional. I don't want to talk drug companies either.

Informative but perhaps also an advertisement... (taking advantage of the situation?)
Yup, most everybody's out to exploit other people's suffering!
This woman's site is interesting, great credentials. Some of it may be tongue in cheek (the crop designs hoax or no hoax? )but she did an interesting interview on the issue.
It sounds like a legitimate disease- I don't see why people would think it's delusional- whole families coming up with skin lesions and neurological symptoms? It surely sounds like an unusual and miserable illness.
I agree, SOME doctors (not all but too many) when they can't figure out what's going on, are too quick to blame the patient, to say it's all psychological, or to stick their head in the sand and deny the symptoms' reality or significance- it's like it's an ego thing which is quite stupid.
I hope they figure out what's causing this at some point so they can get to treatments. Have they tried muscle or nerve biopsies yet on some of these patients, since it sounds like those are the most serious symptoms? (I don't even know if you can do nerve biopsies though can you?)

I don't know about the biopsies, but it would be interesting if they did. Isn't it strange that so many people are having the same complaints, and they are thought of as delusional? I find that just as odd as the symptoms.
As far as skin biopsies on nerves. . . I'm not sure our hospital pathologists will know what to look for. A new discovery of a virus or bacteria will take some time to discover what "it" is and most likely it will be on a university/federal research level. It will take "interested parties" in the medical field to take these people seriously and refer them to those laboratories.
I believe there is some correlation to the immune system. The meth and other addicts who pick at their skin thinking they are infested with insects may indeed have some form of this. What is actually exciting their nerve endings and cause their skin to break out and crawl? Is it similar to the verucella virus? We haven't a cure yet for viruses. Like tuberculosis, we may never know what it is until individuals without multitude of ailments and of a "higher social caliber" comes down with this and the medical community takes them seriously enough to research it, not blowing it off as delusional! (What an insulting term!)Cindy Casey RN with the Morgellon's foundation is a brave soul indeed!

Indigo - after looking at your second link, I seem to remember seeing a show on TV about skin lesions with some kind of fibers in them - wish I'd paid more attention!

If it's for real, there will be plenty more about it, not to worry. I just feel sorry for the afflicted. They are twice cursed, horrible disease, and everyone thinks they are nuts.
