I was just wondering how many credit hours other moms are taking. I am getting ready to start my pre- nursing courses at Ivy Tech this fall. It will be my first time in college. I am a stay at home mom of three boys ages 4, 4 & 2. (The oldest two go to pre-school and are gone about four hours 4x a week.) I signed up for online courses this fall for English, psychology, sociology and ivyt (every new student is has to take it, basically it teaches you how to study etc.) It is only a one credit hour class for the first 8 weeks of the semester, the rest of my classes are three credit hours. I was thinking of adding intro to interpersonal communication which would only put me at 13 credit hours. Psychology and English are the only points classes this semester. I feel like I can do it but was just wondering what others take. I know the college load one can handle vary person to person but I am just curious. I never did well in high school due to at home problems, however I am extremely serious about nursing. I also have been a cna for three and a half year now. Thanks for anyone who replies, I am new to this forum. (:
I am a stay-at-home mom to three- they are 6, 4 and 1. I am taking 7 credit hours right now, A&P and Developmental Psych.
I need to take A&P 2, Microbio, Chemistry 1 and 2 (for health majors) before I can apply (well I have to be "in process"). I plan on applying December 2015. I have a BA in History so I only need to take prereqs.
7 credits has been the max I've taken at one time so far....but even that, one of those classes was online and only for half the semester. I know the course load will be a shock once I'm in the actual nursing blocks which are 9-10 credits a semester but I feel like I have very good time management and carve out study time and homework time so hopefully I can get it done without being completely overwhelmed! My kiddos are 3 and 6.
Hello! I am just a freshman, lol, but I may as well give my answer anyways! I am a mom of 2 (a 2 year old and 4 year old), I work 30-35 hours a week, and I am taking 13 credit hours (4 classes). So far, I am finding it relatively easy and can just manage my time well enough for work, school, hubs, and kids. I plan on sticking with 4 classes per semester. Good luck!!
I just wanted everyone to know I was successful last semester. I took five online classes and two were points courses, but all were for prerequisites for the nursing program. I made the deans list and have a 4.0 currently. Next week I will be taking on campus courses including anatomy 101. Im really enjoying college so far. I just wanted to give an update to everyone. Thank you all for the responses and encouraging words. It is definitely possible.
Think totally depends on the person. Me, I'm a bona fide nerd, always did well without trying too hard. When I started prerequisites last semester I was working 20-25 hours, albeit from home, my husband works 3rd shift so I don't get tons of help during the week. My girls were 3.5 and 8 months when I started. I jumped right in with 17 credits, 6 classes. 2 brick and mortar, 1 hybrid, 3 online. I actually added the hybrid class about 2 weeks into the semester. Although I was seriously questioning my sanity during November. Lol. I ended the semester with a 3.91 and that's because I got a B in the hybrid class I added. Next semester I'm registered for 14 credits /4 classes and I keep having to talk myself OUT of adding another class, I light of the fact that 2 of my registered classes are A&P 2 and Microbiology.
Last semester I took 13 units and Spring '15 I'm taking 18 units. I have a 1 1/2 year old girl, it can get a little difficult especially when your toddler wants to color on your books with highlighters lol... but its doable ... i usually take advantage when my daughter is taking her nap time or she's having snack/lunch/dinner in her high chair.. or even playing with her toys..

My 14 month old LOVES ripping paper. I have to make sure to keep all my stuff out of reach. I survived last semester with only 2 ripped pages in my A&P book, lol

My kids are 7, 5, and 1. I also work from home for ~30 hours/ week. This is my first semester working on pre-reqs. Most transfer in from my first BS degree, but I have several science classes I'm needing to do (A&P, nutrition, micro, etc). I took 2 classes this semester and will take one (anatomy) next. Like others have said, I wanted to have the best grades possible, so taking a full load was not an option.
