As a nurse, what is your first reaction as you hear those words?
Updated:
We have all seen on the news the terrible scene that played out in the streets in Minnesota when George Floyd, an unarmed 46-year-old black male, was arrested by the Minnesota Police for attempted forgery at a convenience store. The action was caught on video as George Floyd, handcuffed and pinned to the ground face down by an officer who pressed with his full weight with his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for more than 8 minutes. We watched and heard George Floyd crying out that he couldn't breathe. We heard him calling for "Mama". We watched as his body went limp with the officer still holding him down. This will be a scene I shall never forget.
The following are quotes from the Minnesota Nurses Association's response to this heinous crime.
QuoteAs nurses, we see the horrific effects of racism in our hospitals and community every day. We cannot remain silent as yet another black man has died at the hands of police...
QuoteGeorge Floyd's last words were "I can't breathe.” George Floyd died shortly after arriving at the hospital."
Nurses jump into action when they hear someone say "I can't breathe", instead of standing there watching them die. Their goal is to save lives, not kill people
QuoteIn the case of George Floyd, Minneapolis Police took no care or life-saving measures. Instead, they left him pinned down to the ground until paramedics arrived. Police ignored the pleas of George Floyd and he died.
Nurses care for all patients, regardless of their gender, race, religion or other status. We expect the same from the police. Unfortunately, nurses continue to see the devastating effects of systematic racism and oppression targeting people of color in our communities. We demand justice for George Floyd and a stop to the unnecessary death of black men at the hands of those who should protect them.
As a nurse, or as a compassionate human, how has this horrific event affected you? We have seen protests (some peaceful and some that have erupted into riots), vandalism, looting, and more. What is going on in your community? What actions can nurses take?
Let us stand together and let our voices be heard. Post your comments below.

As Hoosier states there is good and bad people in every size, color, gender etc. and yes there will be some people who are racist in some situations. But, our "system" does not allow racism and we as a country have worked long and hard to change and weed bad actors out. Will it ever be perfect, no, because humans are flawed (not excusing it just stating facts). IMO, the bigger problem is that out media (MSM) and politicians including the current regime and certain organizations are not helping but worse are fanning the flames. Our "leaders" should be trying to unite, not tear apart. The speech made by Biden and Harris yesterday was not to unite but to further divide (even though they said pre-election they wanted unity!). And, if Biden truly wanted to fix the problem of systemic racism then I ask what has he been doing for the last 50 yrs he has been in office, including 8yrs as VP with a black president! When the media and others come out immed. after a police event (like the current Ohio case) and place blame on the police it only further divides and starts riots (oops I mean peaceful protests), then after the facts come out it is too late, innocent people have been killed, business' and lives ruined. BLM has publicly stated that violence is needed for juctice, anyone see the irony there! If anyone thinks that we will solve any problems by division, violence, riots, blaming "white" people etc you are sorely mistaken! We probably need better police training, retention efforts, pay etc but blaming the entire system and/or defunding will only make matters worse. How will the police backing off help the everyday people including those who live in black neighborhoods with many many killings including children and babies (80% of black people do not want less police in their neighborhoods). Maybe some education on how to behave when stopped by the police would also help. Also, if anyone truly believes that this country is so racist then why do you suppose so many want to come here, doesn't ad up. We need real unity and not all the BS from our leaders/media/schools that we are currently getting or the problems will only get worse and our entire society/country is going to implode and then none of us will like the outcome except the elites!!
Yeah...our "system" allows, tolerates and sometimes even promotes racist ideology and thinking. I wonder how isolated one must be to actually try to deny that fact in this day and age.
Racism in policing.
Racism in the DOJ.
Racism in housing.
Racism in employment.
Racism in healthcare.

How you must treat your patients when you can feel that it is OK to hurl these kinds of stereotypical insults at another nurse. What a closed mind for someone who is "1997". I don't know whether to laugh or cry because it is so sad to see a person of a younger generation who is more backward in judging others than anyone of my era. Makes me feel there is little hope for the future. People are getting worse instead of better. They hurl hate at all that is not them.
Why thank you very much for your validation ??, most gracious of you. Hopefully you realize that all liberals don't just roll over. This liberal, bites! With very large teeth and hands the size of buckets I've been told!
I am only polite to considerate, non cheating, non grifting, non gerrymandering, non voter suppression people.
Pity you don't know any!

So I honestly don't know if you know this but your people have a problem with facts and evidence! You make them up to suit your narrative as you go along.
Wasn't it your president that uttered over 30,000 lies in public office? Did Joe Biden win the election? We don't believe pathological liars. Ever heard about the boy that cried wolf? A republican quoting facts surely you jest? ????

I didn't say it never did! I said the current system does not allow for it, in case you missed it there are now laws in place that make it illegal. But of course there will always be racist people in some of those positions, like the Biden pick who is black and has come right out and stated that black people are superior. Like I said they come in all shapes, sizes, races etc.

"your people "
If a white person says that to a black person, they would never hear the end of it.

Wht people say that sort of thing to black people all the time...that's not unusual or uncommon at all. Typically those wht people feel all offended when they are called out for that type of thoughtless language.

There may be laws but it doesn't mean they are followed. Although there are laws against employment discrimination, it doesn't mean employers have to hire black employees, or give an explanation as to why they hired white candidates instead of equally qualified black candidates. In one experiment, a man sent out the EXACT same resume but on one copy put the name DaQuan, and on the other John. John got many interview offers, DaQuan got none. What does that tell you?
There are laws in the South against lynching. Still happens, even in 2021, without consequences. The Tulsa massacre, where a white mob burned Black Wall Street with no consequences. The "war on drugs" where cops bulldozed black people's homes, didn't find the drugs they were looking for, yet didn't get consequences or have to repair the people's homes. Breonna Taylor, shot in her sleep. SWAT team experts (white men) testified it was a horribly botched, unnecessary, terribly executed raid. No murder charges. The current system DOES, absolutely, undoubtedly, allow for it.

This is not the dream Martin Luther King wanted. it's turned into a nightmare. Blk people think all white people are racist and assume it and fight all white people like they are.

Are you speaking for the black people now or just making a wht assumption about what black people think and want? Are you saying that blacks should stop fighting wht people and just do what the wht people say?

But surely in such a broad statement you should realize that I can't mean everyone? At least that is is how I see things. I don't think all republicans are bad but the bad ones are dominating your headlines.
I would think based on the attributes of republicans that most are exactly in line with how I think. *Small efficient govt *strong military *fiscal responsibility *sensible immigration reforms.
Where we differ and I extrapolate because I am after all a psych nurse and I analyze everything, is, this judgementalness re LGBT, misogynistic tendencies, the differentiation of the races etc. When I expand those things I come up with lack of consideration and a desire to control outcomes to the point of insecurities. AND I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TRUST INSECURE PEOPLE!
Everyone has some levels of normal insecurities but when they manifest themselves in misogyny, racism and alienating LGBT people, that's pathology! Calling Mexicans rapists and murderers, siding with far right groups, calling Africa *** hole countries and no republican house members speak out? I draw the line. Those sort of insecure people are dangerous as evidenced by DeSantis now allowing people to drive their cars into protestors.
Imagine if the British had decided to kill Washington and Ben Franklin when they were in England? Where would we be? How about simply kill the puritans instead of allowing them to leave?
