MNA and Nurses Respond to the Killing of George Floyd by Police

As a nurse, what is your first reaction as you hear those words?

Updated:

We have all seen on the news the terrible scene that played out in the streets in Minnesota when George Floyd, an unarmed 46-year-old black male, was arrested by the Minnesota Police for attempted forgery at a convenience store. The action was caught on video as George Floyd, handcuffed and pinned to the ground face down by an officer who pressed with his full weight with his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for more than 8 minutes. We watched and heard George Floyd crying out that he couldn't breathe. We heard him calling for "Mama". We watched as his body went limp with the officer still holding him down. This will be a scene I shall never forget.

The following are quotes from the Minnesota Nurses Association's response to this heinous crime.

Quote

As nurses, we see the horrific effects of racism in our hospitals and community every day. We cannot remain silent as yet another black man has died at the hands of police...

Quote

George Floyd's last words were "I can't breathe.” George Floyd died shortly after arriving at the hospital."

Nurses jump into action when they hear someone say "I can't breathe", instead of standing there watching them die. Their goal is to save lives, not kill people

Quote

In the case of George Floyd, Minneapolis Police took no care or life-saving measures. Instead, they left him pinned down to the ground until paramedics arrived. Police ignored the pleas of George Floyd and he died.

Nurses care for all patients, regardless of their gender, race, religion or other status. We expect the same from the police. Unfortunately, nurses continue to see the devastating effects of systematic racism and oppression targeting people of color in our communities. We demand justice for George Floyd and a stop to the unnecessary death of black men at the hands of those who should protect them.

As a nurse, or as a compassionate human, how has this horrific event affected you? We have seen protests (some peaceful and some that have erupted into riots), vandalism, looting, and more. What is going on in your community? What actions can nurses take?

This isn't a thoughtful comment, in any way. In fact, the premise for the comment is racist.  The quoted comment amounts to trolling.

Call me racist but you can't call me wrong. It's not trolling. Blk people have a tendency to burn up their neighborhoods. How about less burning and more building. That is a way relationships between white and black can improve. Even black businesses owners are fed up and when they complain they get push back from their community.

It's a 2 way street. People can hate white people just for being white.

Sure, people can hate people for any reason...like for being gay or transgendered or muslim or jewish or mexican...do you get the point? Hate for wht people isn't normalized and interwoven into our institutions.

Actually, I can call you both, if that's how you'd prefer to direct this conversation.

I'd honestly rather that you read something on the subject and listened to more black people so that you didn't embarrass yourself in these comments.

Gee...didn't you say all is this was straightforward? Now all of a sudden we're supposed to just trust and believe the member who seems pathologically unaware of racism in this country.

What this really looks like is you trolling AN, no tide involved.

"your people "

If a white person says that to a black person, they would never hear the end of it.

Yeah, that's called distraction! Over 30,000 documented lies in a four year period and he was the president that over 70 million people revoted for! BECAUSE THEY FELT that he was a good president! The same guy who secondarily was responsible for over a hundred thousand deaths!

The thing is Trump was exactly who he said he was. He wasn't pretending to go to church and con everyone into thinking he was a good guy! It's his supporters who did that! They are the ones who encouraged him and reinforced his despicable behaviors and it's a TOTAL REFLECTION of what they feel people should behave like! After all, if you ask someone for the recipe, it must mean that you liked the meal? So if that's who you people aspire to be, well? What else can I say?

All hail Q!

There may be laws but it doesn't mean they are followed. Although there are laws against employment discrimination, it doesn't mean employers have to hire black employees, or give an explanation as to why they hired white candidates instead of equally qualified black candidates. In one experiment, a man sent out the EXACT same resume but on one copy put the name DaQuan, and on the other John. John got many interview offers, DaQuan got none. What does that tell you?

There are laws in the South against lynching. Still happens, even in 2021, without consequences. The Tulsa massacre, where a white mob burned Black Wall Street with no consequences. The "war on drugs" where cops bulldozed black people's homes, didn't find the drugs they were looking for, yet didn't get consequences or have to repair the people's homes. Breonna Taylor, shot in her sleep. SWAT team experts (white men) testified it was a horribly botched, unnecessary, terribly executed raid. No murder charges. The current system DOES, absolutely, undoubtedly, allow for it.

Well I know I'll be totally discriminating against republicans in the future. I mean suppose a Stephen Miller type comes along and decides to put all the Hispanics in cages and then builds a wall blocking off the bathroom and starts an insurrection and starts hitting people with poles, I might just have to shave his hair plugs off! ??

Nah! I'm just totally going to discriminate against them and save us the trouble! I love Mexican food and no republican is going to build a wall between me and my fajitas and tequila! They might want me to pay for it! ????

You are right, people can hate for any reason...like for being white (also)

Nobody should hate for any of those reasons but we should not be stoking any of those fires but that is exactly what some media and Dems are doing. Of course our Country has a hx of racism but the Country has worked hard to fix/overcome that. It is not interwoven into institutions, yeah there are still racist people but that goes across the board in all directions.

The article you linked is a good example of one written by some woke-ist. Good hx lesson but lost me with the current examples of police discrimination. The writer proved my earlier point about media/politicians using a police event to immediately blame police and call them racists, but even worse this article/writer is still using some of them (as victims of police racism) even after the facts have come out. This does zero to prove (current) systemic racism and is very disturbing. Not to mention how much damage was  caused by the ensuing riots both in property and human damage!

The problem will never be solved until people can have legit conversations with legit facts (vs media/political spin)

This is not the dream Martin Luther King wanted. it's turned into a nightmare. Blk people think all white people are racist and assume it and fight all white people like they are.

Are you thinking about basketball, Bro? I hold a British passport so I can say exactly as I please. We don't give two figs about political correctness.

Dude, are you like using an old laptop or keyboard that's missing the A and C letters? Or are you afraid you might combust if you typed black?

Why do you think that is? Let me hazard a guess? Because they disappear when they walk past a white wall? I wonder why? This is going to keep me up all night ??????
