MNA and Nurses Respond to the Killing of George Floyd by Police

As a nurse, what is your first reaction as you hear those words?

Updated:

We have all seen on the news the terrible scene that played out in the streets in Minnesota when George Floyd, an unarmed 46-year-old black male, was arrested by the Minnesota Police for attempted forgery at a convenience store. The action was caught on video as George Floyd, handcuffed and pinned to the ground face down by an officer who pressed with his full weight with his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for more than 8 minutes. We watched and heard George Floyd crying out that he couldn't breathe. We heard him calling for "Mama". We watched as his body went limp with the officer still holding him down. This will be a scene I shall never forget.

The following are quotes from the Minnesota Nurses Association's response to this heinous crime.

Quote

As nurses, we see the horrific effects of racism in our hospitals and community every day. We cannot remain silent as yet another black man has died at the hands of police...

Quote

George Floyd's last words were "I can't breathe.” George Floyd died shortly after arriving at the hospital."

Nurses jump into action when they hear someone say "I can't breathe", instead of standing there watching them die. Their goal is to save lives, not kill people

Quote

In the case of George Floyd, Minneapolis Police took no care or life-saving measures. Instead, they left him pinned down to the ground until paramedics arrived. Police ignored the pleas of George Floyd and he died.

Nurses care for all patients, regardless of their gender, race, religion or other status. We expect the same from the police. Unfortunately, nurses continue to see the devastating effects of systematic racism and oppression targeting people of color in our communities. We demand justice for George Floyd and a stop to the unnecessary death of black men at the hands of those who should protect them.

As a nurse, or as a compassionate human, how has this horrific event affected you? We have seen protests (some peaceful and some that have erupted into riots), vandalism, looting, and more. What is going on in your community? What actions can nurses take?

Let us stand together and let our voices be heard. Post your comments below.

Seriously, does any of this apply to you? Why would you possibly lump yourself in with these idiots?

Don't you think it's a case of if the shoe fits?

I mean how could I possibly know all these people and how they function. It's a generalization and only applies to the people that it resonates with!

What part of GENERALLY DON'T YOU FOLKS GET?

This opinion is solely mine so don't taint other liberals or Dems with my stupidity.

As a result of my experience and education, these are my conclusions. And that is currently based on my CURRENT PERCEPTIONS which based on new information or insights, can CHANGE!

When you post "both farmers and ranchers" and there was no "generally" in the wording, then those who are in those groups to which the description does not apply will be offended, whether you intend it or not

And now, we see how misconceptions and anger can occur

How about a hypocrite?

You Trumpistas, generally occupy the farming, ranching communities or more rural areas. What do you want to bet that most of them are getting or taking some form of govt handouts!

Both farmers and ranchers are heavily subsidized by the govt. You folks are generally loners and like your independence so you move into areas where you can spread yourself. When you get together, it's a collection of independent, loners who dislike liberals values. You don't talk much or socialize because it's too girlie, you are the strong silent man! The cowboys!

But for some reason defying logic, these quiet, socially inept, contemplative types, hard working, non liberal reading manly men who puts their women in their place HAVE DISCOVERED how to extract knowledge from thin air and BECOME WISE enough to lecture us liberals about everything! The same jackasses who gives the Televangelists their last dime so he can buy another jet or vote to reelect someone who wouldn't spit on them if they were on fire, because he disrespects and thinks so little of them, that he would con them into giving him money for a failed election or a useless wall, AND WE ARE SUPPOSED TO RESPECT AND LISTEN TO THEIR OPINIONS?

I agree most liberals are overeducated idiots who are stupid enough to tolerate you morons, but I don't have one iota of respect for you intolerant hypocritic dolts. I don't listen to liars and cheats or racists and misogynists. In reality I wish you people would pack up and move south and the country splits itself. Yugoslavia did it, Korea, Palestine and Israel and any number of other countries. My life is finite and I could most certainly do without you ground knuckle hanging, gun toting hypocrites around. Go shoot up your own schools and malls because I can assure that most of these crimes are perpetrated by right wing, republican voting, anti abortion, racists!

We will keep the black people and Hispanics etc and the other immigrants because they are hard working, intelligent, good people who have contributed enormously to this country and will continue to do so if given the opportunity AND have you ever had blackened catfish with macaroni and cheese with stewed tomatoes, well we are keeping that recipe and we will farm raise our catfish up here! Oh! We are also keeping dancehall stylee and reggaeton music for ourselves as well! You folks can keep your tractor pulls and Nascar races!

I have to say on a nursing website this is the most insulting, bigoted comment I have ever seen. I cannot imagine you as a nurse. How you must treat your patients when you can feel that it is OK to hurl these kinds of stereotypical insults at another nurse. What a closed mind for someone who is "1997". I don't know whether to laugh or cry because it is so sad to see a person of a younger generation who is more backward in judging others than anyone of my era. Makes me feel there is little hope for the future. People are getting worse instead of better. They hurl hate at all that is not them.

I don't think it's the most insulting or bigoted comment ever seen in these threads.  This one did generalize, not very happily, about rural white people though didn't it? Just like black people have known forever in this country, negative generalizations about groups have personal impact. People feel bad, offended even if they believe they've been categorized in a negative way  At least conservatives can choose whether or not they fit the generalized category described.  Most racist generalizations don't allow that.

In contrast, "we find that nonwhite officers kill both black and Latino suspects at significantly higher rates than white officers," they write. "This is likely due to the fact that minority police officers tend to be assigned to minority neighborhoods, and therefore have more contact with minority suspects."

https://psmag.com/social-justice/black-cops-are-just-as-likely-as-whites-to-kill-black-suspects

More blk cops kill blk people than white cops. Where are the riots for this? Are the BLM signs for blk cops or just the white cops? How about making some signs for the blk cops to. Blk lives only matter when blk people are killed by white cops. The uproar only came about due to a white cop. Where is the uproar in the community over black people killing each other at extremely high levels. Put some energy into addressing these issues to if you want to help your lives.

Once the few white racist cops stop killing blk people (I don't condone this), blk killings will most likely stay the same or increase because blk  cops are killing blk people the most, blk people don't seem to care about that and blk people kill each other at alarming rates. Blk people make up about 13 percent of the population but are responsible for half of the crime in the US.

You truly are obsessed. You take a non-related comment and turn it racist again! God love you!

LOL

Funny how you think your comment wasn't related to race relations in this country. Veiled adequately I guess....

God does love me.

Racism is a pervasive problem in this country.  It's so pervasive that millions of wht Americans don't even really understand what racism is or how it affects daily life for nonwhts. We see evidence of that wht ignorance of systemic racism here in the AN threads.  We see it in the casual language usage of whts when discussing the black experience with racism.  Maybe you can't see that...

What black America needs is fewer excuses about why white racism makes them fail. We need to awaken to the liberating, xTC even exhilarating, realization that we can succeed on our own and fail on our own without any help from white people whatsoever.

And along about now, May 22, 1996, the white racism excuse being used to explain away the more uncomfortable aspects of African-American life is taking on the disturbing stench of an excuse. And it's not because white racism doesn't exist. Plenty of it exists, yet immigrant blacks are able to overcome it while native-born blacks seem to blame it for nearly everything -- from failing to start businesses to being unable to tie our damned shoes. If white racism were the primary barrier to blacks being more successful, shouldn't it affect all blacks equally -- native and foreign born?

I am so worried for our Country because we are not going in the right direction. As Hoosier states there is good and bad people in every size, color, gender etc. and yes there will be some people who are racist in some situations. But, our "system" does not allow racism and we as a country have worked long and hard to change and weed bad actors out. Will it ever be perfect, no, because humans are flawed (not excusing it just stating facts). IMO, the bigger problem is that out media (MSM) and politicians including the current regime and certain organizations are not helping but worse are fanning the flames. Our "leaders" should be trying to unite, not tear apart. The speech made by Biden and Harris yesterday was not to unite but to further divide (even though they said pre-election they wanted unity!). And, if Biden truly wanted to fix the problem of systemic racism then I ask what has he been doing for the last 50 yrs he has been in office, including 8yrs as VP with a black president! When the media and others come out immed. after a police event (like the current Ohio case) and place blame on the police it only further divides and starts riots (oops I mean peaceful protests), then after the facts come out it is too late, innocent people have been killed, business' and lives ruined. BLM has publicly stated that violence is needed for juctice, anyone see the irony there! If anyone thinks that we will solve any problems by division, violence, riots, blaming "white" people etc you are sorely mistaken! We probably need better police training, retention efforts, pay etc but blaming the entire system and/or defunding will only make matters worse. How will the police backing off help the everyday people including those who live in black neighborhoods with many many killings including children and babies (80% of black people do not want less police in their neighborhoods). Maybe some education on how to behave when stopped by the police would also help. Also, if anyone truly believes that this country is so racist then why do you suppose so many want to come here, doesn't ad up. We need real unity and not all the BS from our leaders/media/schools that we are currently getting or the problems will only get worse and our entire society/country is going to implode and then none of us will like the outcome except the elites!!

Definitely black people need more wht people telling them what they should and shouldn't do and what counts as an excuse versus what is just claiming victimhood.  Definitely wht social conservatives know a thing or two about excuses and blame in the Trump era.

I guess that racism doesn't exist because there are poor wht people too, or doesn't trickle down economics make everyone equally wealthy? It's difficult to understand what sort of logic you are applying to your evaluation of racism in this country.
