As a nurse, what is your first reaction as you hear those words?
Updated:
We have all seen on the news the terrible scene that played out in the streets in Minnesota when George Floyd, an unarmed 46-year-old black male, was arrested by the Minnesota Police for attempted forgery at a convenience store. The action was caught on video as George Floyd, handcuffed and pinned to the ground face down by an officer who pressed with his full weight with his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for more than 8 minutes. We watched and heard George Floyd crying out that he couldn't breathe. We heard him calling for "Mama". We watched as his body went limp with the officer still holding him down. This will be a scene I shall never forget.
The following are quotes from the Minnesota Nurses Association's response to this heinous crime.
QuoteAs nurses, we see the horrific effects of racism in our hospitals and community every day. We cannot remain silent as yet another black man has died at the hands of police...
QuoteGeorge Floyd's last words were "I can't breathe.” George Floyd died shortly after arriving at the hospital."
Nurses jump into action when they hear someone say "I can't breathe", instead of standing there watching them die. Their goal is to save lives, not kill people
QuoteIn the case of George Floyd, Minneapolis Police took no care or life-saving measures. Instead, they left him pinned down to the ground until paramedics arrived. Police ignored the pleas of George Floyd and he died.
Nurses care for all patients, regardless of their gender, race, religion or other status. We expect the same from the police. Unfortunately, nurses continue to see the devastating effects of systematic racism and oppression targeting people of color in our communities. We demand justice for George Floyd and a stop to the unnecessary death of black men at the hands of those who should protect them.
As a nurse, or as a compassionate human, how has this horrific event affected you? We have seen protests (some peaceful and some that have erupted into riots), vandalism, looting, and more. What is going on in your community? What actions can nurses take?
Let us stand together and let our voices be heard. Post your comments below.

Until people black or white can stop demanding to be special based on race, it will not end. Rioting in the streets is not a good way to win friends and influence people. It is a violent radical leftist group. Not going to discuss your baloney any more toomuch. Hate all you want. I am busy caring about real world issues.

Black people are demanding to get the same treatment as white people.
Currently they don't and the evidence supports it

I read that several times, there are no stats in the article

Not all of it but some of it. Of course you could be a law abiding citizen and something could still happen (unfair treatment by a white cop) that shouldn't but dang can't blk people try to help themselves?
Golly, maybe the wht people ought to explain to the blk people what caring about each other looks like. Are you suggesting that if the blk people would just [fill in the blank] the police would stop killing or abusing them with no regard for their well being? You must be aware that you are blaming the victims of police brutality and violence, right?
Speaking about people not helping themselves...have you ever noticed that racists and bigots always out themselves in conversations. It's like they can't help themselves. How ironic, eh?

In a way I feel sad for Dereck Chauvin. He has been held up as the scape goat for a system that is bad. He has been made to carry the can.
Sad situation all round.
Chauvin made his own decisions that put him where he is. He isn't a scapegoat, he's a cold blooded murderer.
Yes, there's a wider problem with policing in this country. The fact that Chauvin thought he could just claim that he was following protocol is evidence of the lack of accountability. That baloney defense has worked in the past...way too often. Clearly, police do not meet the standard to be called professionals.

Rule of 3s. 3 minutes without oxygen...... Former Officer Chauvin obstructed George Floyds airway for over nine minutes. Even if he'd lived, George Floyd most likely would have suffered irreversible brain damage

I believe Chauvin claimed he was following his training. I would suggest the police needs better training. I work in acute pysch, and we often have to restrain and seclude violent patients and guess how many die? None. In Te Whare Manaki which is the unit for people accused of and who have been convicted of actual criminal offenses. Guess how many of those patients die when under restraint? None.
Like I said, these cops need better training. Because if a bunch of nurses can restrain and manage violent people, police have no ***ing excuse

How about a hypocrite?
You Trumpistas, generally occupy the farming, ranching communities or more rural areas. What do you want to bet that most of them are getting or taking some form of govt handouts!
Both farmers and ranchers are heavily subsidized by the govt. You folks are generally loners and like your independence so you move into areas where you can spread yourself. When you get together, it's a collection of independent, loners who dislike liberals values. You don't talk much or socialize because it's too girlie, you are the strong silent man! The cowboys!
But for some reason defying logic, these quiet, socially inept, contemplative types, hard working, non liberal reading manly men who puts their women in their place HAVE DISCOVERED how to extract knowledge from thin air and BECOME WISE enough to lecture us liberals about everything! The same jackasses who gives the Televangelists their last dime so he can buy another jet or vote to reelect someone who wouldn't spit on them if they were on fire, because he disrespects and thinks so little of them, that he would con them into giving him money for a failed election or a useless wall, AND WE ARE SUPPOSED TO RESPECT AND LISTEN TO THEIR OPINIONS?
I agree most liberals are overeducated idiots who are stupid enough to tolerate you morons, but I don't have one iota of respect for you intolerant hypocritic dolts. I don't listen to liars and cheats or racists and misogynists. In reality I wish you people would pack up and move south and the country splits itself. Yugoslavia did it, Korea, Palestine and Israel and any number of other countries. My life is finite and I could most certainly do without you ground knuckle hanging, gun toting hypocrites around. Go shoot up your own schools and malls because I can assure that most of these crimes are perpetrated by right wing, republican voting, anti abortion, racists!
We will keep the black people and Hispanics etc and the other immigrants because they are hard working, intelligent, good people who have contributed enormously to this country and will continue to do so if given the opportunity AND have you ever had blackened catfish with macaroni and cheese with stewed tomatoes, well we are keeping that recipe and we will farm raise our catfish up here! Oh! We are also keeping dancehall stylee and reggaeton music for ourselves as well! You folks can keep your tractor pulls and Nascar races!

My husbands family farms, 250 acres. Not a big enough operation to subsidize, so please know that all farmers don't enjoy this benefit. Mainly large corporate operations
As far as liberal independent values by us small farms, most in my community are live and let live, so maybe there's something in the water of the larger farms ?♀️.
I don't know why you think we don't like others of other cultures. I love to learn about other cultures, especially places I haven't traveled, and people I've never encountered.
Farm raised catfish? Ewww, go wild. Otherwise, the foods you named, tasty. Tractor pulls are okay, NASCAR, well, not so much!
Yes, there are racists out in the country, but there's good people as well. But they're also in the city, suburbs, and come in every race, shape, size, political affiliation and location.
Before anyone calls me racist, know this: my sons, and grandchildren are biracial. My ex husband is black. He and his current wife (also black) come to my house often to visit, as well do my sons and grands. No one has ever called the police thinking that anything was amiss, and I do have some very nosey neighbors. So please, don't generalize about any group, it makes you guilty of an -ism as well.

Exactly this. The ones who point the fingers are often the worst bigots of all. Nascar, tractor pulls, how stereotyped is that? Why do people continue to want to divide this country? If you want equality that means unity. Otherwise, we are back to separate but equal. Is that what some people want? A black world and a white world? A liberal world and a conservative world? We are supposed to be pulling this country together. I am so glad that I live in an area that is well mixed with all sorts of people and we live in peace. Like you, I love to learn about other cultures. We celebrate cultures in my area- we have Nationality Days and all kinds of festivals to celebrate our heritage. And we all get along. I wish the rest of the country was like that. I guess I am blessed.

Seriously, does any of this apply to you? Why would you possibly lump yourself in with these idiots?
Don't you think it's a case of if the shoe fits?
I mean how could I possibly know all these people and how they function. It's a generalization and only applies to the people that it resonates with!

What part of GENERALLY DON'T YOU FOLKS GET?
This opinion is solely mine so don't taint other liberals or Dems with my stupidity.
As a result of my experience and education, these are my conclusions. And that is currently based on my CURRENT PERCEPTIONS which based on new information or insights, can CHANGE!

A scape goat was an innocent animal, slaughtered for the sins of others.
Curious- why exactly do you feel bad for Derek Chauvin?
