i'm feeling very short fused lately with the parade of minor complaints coming into my office. Chapped lips -holy crow - i must have seen 50 kids looking for the little packets of lip balm yesterday - i just stopped charting it at one point when i got too busy with actual issues. Dry skin, stuffy noses. I can't believe that students are let out of class for these non issues. Yes, i get that dry skin is irritating, but it's also not worth leaving in the middle of a lesson for.
And, yes - i've mentioned to staff and admins that perhaps the children don't need to leave class for all of these small crises. Some of my admins are supportive, some of the teachers are cooperative - others not so much.
The teacher said the student started to fall, but she helped her down on her bottom. I don't do the training, Ive been bugging the RN to do something, but she replied with..Its a manual wheel chair what training to they actually need! I am really careful and take her up stairs that are dry, and no other kids pushing through. The aides have slowly abandoned her with me when I do her cath's 2x a day, so I am having to walk her back to her classes when they leave her with me. It's a freaking mess. Our campus is not a level walking area. It is old, and ramps are very steep. So I think the aides are not wanting to work those ramps.
I don't know what your state regulations are but a clean cath can be delegated to someone who is not a nurse but I believe you should talk to either your principal or whomever about the aides' behavior.
I just do not get my PE / Athletic coaches. They will call me on the radio in a panic for a 2 drop nosebleed to come with the wheelchair. But a kid who cannot bear weight on foot at all, they have him ice with no barrier for about 45 minutes. Then, he hops on one leg all the way down hall to come see me. I take one look at the huge knot protruding from the lateral side of his foot. Yep, fractured!!!
They have a wheelchair, radio and phone - I have a wheelchair, radio and phone but he has to hop down a very long hallway from gym to come see me???????
Poor kid. Once again, where is good old fashioned common sense?? I swear these teachers think if they just get them out of their door that they are absolved of any responsibility???
She self-caths herself, but I am supposed to be watching her while she does it. She cannot control her bowels, so mostly I am cleaning up her BMs. It's just frustrating when I feel like they could use the Aides for this stuff, but because im the nurse (health) they all look to me. The RN is NO HELP, she says she wants me to be authority figure on campus, and she wants to step away from anything that doesn't involve screenings or IEP's, cause her contract is for that. So I am left to make decisions that Im not comfortable with. Honestly If I wanted to have more authority I would of been a RN!
I had it all today:
1. My nose feels weird
2. I can't move my fingers (as he waves his fingers almost poking me in the eye)
3. My thumb is blue (newspaper ink)
4. My stomach froze on up in gym
5. My mouth feels minty (while sucking on a mint) and I don't like that feeling.
Ughhhhhhhh...........

Just be careful you are not acting out of scope per your state nurses practice act. Don't let her lazyness affect your license.
I had the RN pull up her IEP meeting notes, which clearly state the student can self-cath. Last year in 6th grade she had an aide, but honestly she's 13, and I do not see why I have to stand akwardly to the side of the restroom while she self-cath's herself. My office is literally 5 steps down the hall from the restroom. No one at her home watches/helps her with her cath.
