Might get kicked out today!

I might get kicked out today for carrying IV saline with me! I didn't know it was bad :( one of the nurses told me w shoul always carry that with us... Along with other items! :( I made a stupid mistake! How bad is this mistakes you guys? I'm not sure if I would be able I reapply?! I have a meeting with the director of nursing and the teacher who saw me with it! I had zero intention of doing anything bad with it?! By the way my clinical instructor is very strict she had put me on probation for being late once last semester! :( honestly she even lied and said I was late 3 times before putting me on probation last semester! I was usually the last one to arrive but never late. I messed up big time!

DO you mean you were carrying IV saline bags with you, or just flushes? Seeing as LVNs cant start Ivs or IV push without certification and only in some states, holding either flushes or fluid bags just seems like a bad idea, but if it was just flushes you may be ok and just get in trouble. If you were holding fluid bags, it may not go as well.

In my RN program, we cant just carry flushes or any IV fluids around with us. But our instructors and the facilities are very strict about this. So I can't imagine that being ok in a PN/VN program. GL and I hoep everything turns out ok.

Hi - when they said they carry saline around, did u misunderstand? As an RN, I always had a few NS flushes I my lab coat pocket. We had the ones in the pre-filled syringes that were still wrapped. When u used one at the bedside, u just scanned it (to charge that pt with the saline). We need them quite a bit, to flush SLs, to flush a running IV, ect.

I can't imagine the staff saying to carry the big saline bags - maybe u can plead ignorance - that when they said saline u thought they meant the bags.

Good luck!

What ended up happening?

It's actually a JCOAH violation. All meds are to be in a secure place and they don't consider our pockets to be secure. Doesn't mean there aren't thousands of nurses doing it but it's still a violation.

I had one of those pre-filled syringes that were still wrapped. I had no idea It was considered a medication. Got kicked out to never applied to that school ever again! :( I had no intentions of using it. The teacher say it over And over again is not within our scope for VN STUDENTS TO ADMINISTER IV. I simply had it to help the RN I was shadowing in case she needed it kinda like to be prepare for anything you know like having scissors tape co band , alcohol wipes!! :( During lab on campus we practice with normal saline to clean "wounds"! Or maybe it was just a pretend Normal saline!!! :( lesson learned! Well the IV saline prewrapped syringes are inside a med room with password to go in students are allowe to go in there with their RN . They're right next to alcohol wipes..the other drugs are inside the med room inside a med drug box which you need a password that only RN have!

I learned my lesson the hard way I left with my chin up I'll find another program I'm still young I won't give up on my dream!!

I am sorry to hear that they did this to you. I would have thought that correcting you would have been enough for such a situation. I wonder how the instructor who told me to steal syringes and needles, as well as vials of saline to practice injections at home would fit into that school's cadre of instructors? Such a vast difference between policies, from one school to the next, and students suffer for it. Good luck in finding another program.

Yeah they accuse me of intentions of stealing it and intentions of using it with patients!! such a shame! It's a huge set back but I will make it! I have a passion for nursing I refuse to settle for anything else!

Our NS syringes aren't locked up. Neither are the bags. In school we were taught to always carry a few syringes (still wrapped) in our pockets just in case we needed them to flush IVs, clean a wound, etc.

They are kept on the COWs at the hospital at my clinical rotation site. They aren't locked up.

I'm sorry this happened to you, seems that's kind of harsh to kick you out without the possibility of being able to come back.
