Might get kicked out today!

I might get kicked out today for carrying IV saline with me! I didn't know it was bad :( one of the nurses told me w shoul always carry that with us... Along with other items! :( I made a stupid mistake! How bad is this mistakes you guys? I'm not sure if I would be able I reapply?! I have a meeting with the director of nursing and the teacher who saw me with it! I had zero intention of doing anything bad with it?! By the way my clinical instructor is very strict she had put me on probation for being late once last semester! :( honestly she even lied and said I was late 3 times before putting me on probation last semester! I was usually the last one to arrive but never late. I messed up big time!

They are kept on the COWs at the hospital at my clinical rotation site. They aren't locked up.

I'm sorry this happened to you, seems that's kind of harsh to kick you out without the possibility of being able to come back.

Yeah a huge set back that's how I see it as set back everybody has them! I'm already looking for schools! The closes one is 1 hr away!

As PN students, our clinical instructor today handed us alcohol swabs and wrapped pre filled saline flushes and told us to always carry them around since you never know when you will need them. Not sure why we need them as PN students since we can't use them though but it certainly isn't illegal in Michigan.

Your clinical instructor probably read this thread!

It's actually a JCOAH violation. All meds are to be in a secure place and they don't consider our pockets to be secure. Doesn't mean there aren't thousands of nurses doing it but it's still a violation.

Ah! I didn't know that! Thanks for the info.

If you can afford to take the drive take the drive it's temporary I'm doing it 1 hour and 30 minutes to be exact.

I'm a PN student in Oklahoma and yes we start/flush IVs,but I only carry NS flushes when I am on my way to do an IV med or routine flush.

Just when things couldn't get worst!! Well I was dissmissed for clinal Unsafety and banned from that school... Right so I thought that was the end! I researched schools near me and I came across the fact that some schools asks about the previous schools records! The school that is closes to where I live ( 1hours away) their policy is that if a students has been removed from the program for Unsafety issues is an automatic disqualification!!! :( they even require a letter from the director Of nursing to state the facts of the dismissal

is is there anything I can do?! Is this even legal?!

So now my chances of being accepted into a nursing program are close to zero!! My logic is that why would a nursing program accept someone who has been dissmissed from another program for safety issues to never qualify for that school ever again?, when they have hundreds of qualifying individuals?! :(

has as anyone been in the same situation? Is my dream of being a nurse gone?

Most schools inquire records from previous school.

@rndreamer4. Is there anyway to appeal the schools decision? I'm not familiar w the state or PN vs RN laws but it does seem a little extreme to be kicked out and not just written up or warned.

Im sorry that happened to you. As a PN instructor, that would have been a nonissue with me. At the most, I would have told the student if what they were doing was against the rules of the facility.

As a director of a PN program, each state has there own set scope of practice for the LPN. In AZ the PN students start IV's and can flush with saline, just not give IVP meds. Yes in every state saline per the Joint commission, is considered a medication and is to be stored appropriately. Some facilities are more strict than others, and also depends on the department one works in. Something you may be able to do is write up a plan for your future success, what you did, why it would not happen again, and set a meeting to speak with the director of the program, requesting to reapply under a probationary status.

I talked to the Director of nursing and I feel it didn't go ok..I asked for probationary status next year.. F I felt he wasn't listening and he even rolled his eyes at some point during our conversation while I was speaking! He said it was a safety issue have I giving it to the nurse if she needed it!! He asked me if If a nurse told me to give a medication to a patient what would I have done?! I said I would decline! Then he said what if you were a licensed nurse?! I said I would still decline!! Well if a nurse ask you to hand her medication, would you have hand it to her?! I said no! Because I wouldn't have medication on me to begin with!! He said how about the IV saline flush I said yes!! He said you shot yourself on the foot! IV SAline is a medication! How unsafe is that! ... I said but I didn't know IV saline was a medication!! He said that were the problem is you lack critical thinking skills! "You could put a patient in danger"! He said he will make his decision of o could reapply next year and contact me soon after speaking with my teacher! :( it doesn't look good! I will not be able to qualify for any school!!what do you guys think?!

Move to another area and start over? If this program is a proprietary one and not one connected with a public school, you could probably safely disregard it in future admissions, assuming you were not receiving some sort of financial aid. Just a thought.
