Microbiology - Summer 2005

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Just getting the Microbiology thread started for those of us taking it this summer :) Let's introduce ourselves. I'm sure we may recognize each other from the A&P thread and hopefully there will be some new students too!

I'm Jennifer, married with 3 kids (11,6,2). I'm starting the nursing program in August and other than my humanities elective, I'll be ALL DONE with gen. ed. courses. I've been a SAHM for 7 years but am considering a PT summer job to help pay for expenses (mine and DD's - middle school is expensive between cheerleading ($305), flute ($700!!) and the newly mandated uniforms  ). Oh and I have been a mystery shopper for 7 years too which basically helps us get out and do stuff that we otherwise wouldn't be able to afford.

My classes start May 17. I'm taking Micro Tues, Wed, Thurs from 6-9 (lecture from 6-7:20, lab from 7:30-9.) I'm also taking English 102 online. YUCK. I don't want to write papers this summer. We're using Tortoro's book in Micro, BTW.

I really have no idea what to expect for this course. I did very well in A&P 1 and 2 (A :balloons: ) but am feeling a bit burnt out - having only 1 week off between spring and summer semester is not enough. We have the entire week of July 4th off for break, and DH and I are surprising our kids with a week in Disneyworld We can't wait!! I spend way too much time on the DIS boards and planning our trip:p

Wow, most of you are already way into micro! I'm just starting class tonight at 6pm...I hope it's not too late for me to join the group:) I have no idea what to expect from this class, but I'm really nervous about taking it in 8 weeks. I figured it was better to get it out of the way before I start my nursing classes this fall....hope I'm right.lol. Anyway, I hope you are all doing great!! I will post as soon as I return from my first class. Wish me luck guys....I'll need it!

Hi, Kayla Caldwell again. It's been a while since i wrote. I started my micro class yesterday. We finished chapter 1 today and started on chapter 2. It's going so fast. I have my first test Monday ( I think. It may be Tuesday.) I keep studying and studying and feel like it's not sinking in. Our first chapter was just the Introduction chapter. Now we are studying the Chemistry chapter. I hate chemistry and don't understand it. :uhoh3:

Anyway, I called the school yesterday to find out that I am #5 on the waiting list for nursing school this fall. I think that's really good. My best friend just graduated from nursing school. When she was waiting to get in, she started out as #28 on the waiting list. She still got in. So, I think I'll get a acceptance letter within the next 2 weeks. :) Anyway, gotta get back to studying. ttyl.

My name is Kimberly, I have a husband and 3 children, whose ages are 9,4 and 3. I'll be starting nursing school this Fall and I'm currently taking Microbiology and Chemistry this summer! Hope everyone does great!:) :balloons:

I am a second year nursing student taking microbiolgy this summer because I was too lazy to take it last summer and am now regretting that decision. (Micro isnt required until the second year of nursing in the program I'm attending)

Thankfully it's a four week course. We take four exams and no lab exam or final

The teacher is fantastic. She has all her notes typed up for us already so we can print them out and she even has the test questions ready so that we can study them. I go to class M-Th from 0800-1310 and on Friday from 0800-1000

Again it's only for 4 weeks!!!:chuckle

Wow NurseBunky, I want to go where you do!

DITTO!!!! My class is only 8 weeks, but the tests are harder than ^*((. I can't follow the instructor at all. For the second test, I am going to do an outline of the chapters on my own. The instructor's notes are not organized, and also hard to follow.

JUST LET ME GET THROUGH 5 MORE WEEKS!!!

Hi everyone, been MIA! We are starting our unknowns pretty soon. I am kind of excited :) I am doing well - got an A so far :balloons: My instructor is just a RIOT so that makes the class fun.

I am so bogged down this summer between my classes (micro and English 102 - online with a HORRID instructor :( ), the kids, hubby, vacation bible school in a week (I am a teacher - though I love it, I am regretting volunteering this year!), prepping for a yard sale to earn spending money for our upcoming disneyworld trip (july 2-8), etc - I am so overwhelmed!!! Hope everyone else is doing well!!!

I haven't even started yet, but you are all scaring me! LOL

2 more weeks.

Ok guys, I can tell already this class is NOT gonna be fun for me!! My lecture instructor is from India and has a very thick accent. I spent all of last night trying to listen to my tape and I still have no freakin clue what this guy is trying to say! As if that wasn't bad enough, he doesn't give any handouts at all!!! I approached him after class to ask why he doesn't give handouts OR notes and he goes " I find that students who have to take notes during class don't pay attention to what the instructor has to say in class...I would rather you just listen to me" Ummm, are you kidding!!??? That would be great if I could understand WHAT you were saying. LOL...then while he was talking in class he goes "be sure to know the strain of E coli that causes disease...it has numbers look it up because I'm not sure which it is." ohhh man, this is gonna be the longest 8 weeks of my life!! lol...help!

My instructor has a very light accent, so that's rarely the problem. Do you use Tortora? I have found, my instructor's notes are a jumbled mess anyway. She talks too fast, then screws up what she is saying. Then she has to go back to correct herself, and by that time I've completely lost what the topic was.....the next five weeks will be long!

I'm not sure if I put all of this on this thread or what...there's 3 micro threads on here lol. BUT....I decided just to go through and make my own outline notes straight from the book. *I still take notes in class, but the time I get home I don't remember the significance for half of it b/c the lady talks too dang fast to take half-way decent notes. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :angryfire

Anyway, make sure you STOP your instructor if you don't understand what he is saying. I usually say if you don't understand what he's talking about, but I really think, if you are in the same boat I am, that understanding will come from studying the book!

Good luck!

It would drive me crazy having an instructor I couldn't understand. At our school, there is some sort of policy in place regarding that, but I'm not sure how it works. Best of luck to you, and ITA with the advice of stopping when you need clarification.
