Microbiology - Summer 2005

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Just getting the Microbiology thread started for those of us taking it this summer :) Let's introduce ourselves. I'm sure we may recognize each other from the A&P thread and hopefully there will be some new students too!

I'm Jennifer, married with 3 kids (11,6,2). I'm starting the nursing program in August and other than my humanities elective, I'll be ALL DONE with gen. ed. courses. I've been a SAHM for 7 years but am considering a PT summer job to help pay for expenses (mine and DD's - middle school is expensive between cheerleading ($305), flute ($700!!) and the newly mandated uniforms  ). Oh and I have been a mystery shopper for 7 years too which basically helps us get out and do stuff that we otherwise wouldn't be able to afford.

My classes start May 17. I'm taking Micro Tues, Wed, Thurs from 6-9 (lecture from 6-7:20, lab from 7:30-9.) I'm also taking English 102 online. YUCK. I don't want to write papers this summer. We're using Tortoro's book in Micro, BTW.

I really have no idea what to expect for this course. I did very well in A&P 1 and 2 (A :balloons: ) but am feeling a bit burnt out - having only 1 week off between spring and summer semester is not enough. We have the entire week of July 4th off for break, and DH and I are surprising our kids with a week in Disneyworld We can't wait!! I spend way too much time on the DIS boards and planning our trip:p

You will do fine! These short classes are intense- I took A&P I over 5 weeks last summer! Yikes! I think we should post questions like you did so we can all help each other out and learn in the process. Kind of like an online study group!

Jess -

I think that is an awesome idea. I just feel bad because my class doesn't start until 6/13 - by then everyone will be half way finished. :uhoh3:

I will take good notes and maybe when it comes time for class to start, I will be well on my way to conquering it in 8 weeks :)

Lucky you! lol Maybe you'll understand it by the the time you start! :)

I went to class tonight, and I think I'll be ok. I just have to make sure I comprehend what I read, study the notes, and do it all over again. :)

My first test is next weekend over chapters 1-6!

(My A&P 2 class is 4 weeks, but luckily the lectures are on video tape. I can watch them over and over! lol)

Last night's lab was cool! :) We did 2 simple stainings, 1 negative staining, and 1 capsular staining. It's really disgusting to know what all is on the water fountain spicketts!! (sp?)

One of the students at my table swabbed where the water comes out of the water fountain, and it grew bacteria like crazy!! :barf01:

I really have to study this weekend, the lecture part is beyond my comprehension right now. :stone

All I know is.....For myself, 7 more weeks and this class is over! :chuckle

Hi, My name is Cindy. I'm 44, I have a 23 year old daughter in the Air Force. I, too, am studying Microbiology this summer ( beginning June 6). It's an 8 week course, 4 nights (Mon thru Thurs. 6-9:30). I work full-time during the day in dental insurance (yawn).

You guys made me laugh when you wrote of reading your text already! I thought I was the only one-LOL. My co-workers call me a "school geek" because I'm always studying and I couldn't wait to get my new book!

I have mixed feelings and expectations about Microbiology. On the one hand, I hated chemistry (but still got an A) and on the other hand, I find viruses, diseases, epidemics fascinating. So I'm dreading the class and excited about it at the same time!

Anyway, I've started reading also. I've also started making flash cards for the terminology and bookmarking some websites. There is another discussion thread here somewhere with people that have already taken micro. Some of the comments were helpful and some were a little scary but take them with a grain of salt since everyone is different.

Good Luck to everyone and hopefully we can help each other get through it successfully!!

Uggghhhh...chemistry! My program doesn't require chemistry, but I did take it in high school. I got a 9 on one of my tests!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cynthiajulia: I'll just say I did manage to pass chemistry in high school. I'm not sure what my grade was. I can pretty much guarantee that it wasn't an A. lol

I really like the lab part, but I just feel overwhelmed about lecture parts. I did feel the same way about A&P 1, but passed with 101%. Hopefully, as long as I buckle down and study, I will come out with an A or at least a B. :) (Of course, I should be studying, and not on this site!) lol Sooooooo, off I go back to hit the books! :banghead:

Good luck to you

Okay, I got my book today and I can join the ranks of geekhood for reading before class even starts! My class doesn't begin until 6/13 but I am going to start reading this afternoon. I figure it cannot hurt - RIGHT!

Have a great day everyone!!

Of those who have started class, has anyone been given an outline or template on how to keep up with your unknown notes?

I plan on keeping mine typed up as I go, but want to have a plan with me each day....in order to write down anything, and everything I may need to know to figure out my unknown.

Hope everyone's classes are going well. My first lab practical is tomorrow, and I have to take the first test sometime this week. uggggh

When did you start your unknowns? I had only 1 lab so far - we go 2x a week.

We go three times a week. Right now, we are starting a practice unknown, but next Wednesday (6/8), we will begin our real unknowns project.

I know we will receive 2 handouts, but I wanted to make a checklist or something to make it easier on me to keep up with, and have all the information I need in a legible, organized manner.

I can't get my book until the 7th, I start the 13th. It's nice to know many of us will be going through it together :)
