Microbiology - Summer 2005

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Just getting the Microbiology thread started for those of us taking it this summer :) Let's introduce ourselves. I'm sure we may recognize each other from the A&P thread and hopefully there will be some new students too!

I'm Jennifer, married with 3 kids (11,6,2). I'm starting the nursing program in August and other than my humanities elective, I'll be ALL DONE with gen. ed. courses. I've been a SAHM for 7 years but am considering a PT summer job to help pay for expenses (mine and DD's - middle school is expensive between cheerleading ($305), flute ($700!!) and the newly mandated uniforms  ). Oh and I have been a mystery shopper for 7 years too which basically helps us get out and do stuff that we otherwise wouldn't be able to afford.

My classes start May 17. I'm taking Micro Tues, Wed, Thurs from 6-9 (lecture from 6-7:20, lab from 7:30-9.) I'm also taking English 102 online. YUCK. I don't want to write papers this summer. We're using Tortoro's book in Micro, BTW.

I really have no idea what to expect for this course. I did very well in A&P 1 and 2 (A :balloons: ) but am feeling a bit burnt out - having only 1 week off between spring and summer semester is not enough. We have the entire week of July 4th off for break, and DH and I are surprising our kids with a week in Disneyworld We can't wait!! I spend way too much time on the DIS boards and planning our trip:p

Specializes in NICU.

I got an A :balloons: I can't believe some of you are just finishing. Our fall semester started August 18th! :) I'm in the "real" nursing classes now, and WOW it's different. LOTS of reading.

I noticed this thread this summer, but was too busy to respond (or so I thought). Anyway, the summer is over. How did we all do?

I finished my Online final yesterday. Don't know my grade (B, perhaps??)

:balloons: IT'S OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :balloons:

I did get a "B". So far this was the hardest class I had to take and do not want to see micro again!!!! :uhoh3: I am sure you did get a "B". We started out nursing classes and I am going to the hospital tonight for a tour. I can't wait. I am sure the nursing classes are going to be just as hard as micro. If we can pass micro we can pass nursing!!! Best of luck to you!!!

Hello to all...My name is kelly, and I'll be starting my medical micro class (8 wks.), in june. I'm 37 years old, have 2 girls, ages 17, and 15, and have been remarried for a year this month. This is the first time i've not worked, and just concentrated on my studies.:specs: I got accepted in the nursing program, to begin in August, and this micro class is my last pre-req. My program is in KY. I've heard from other students that it's really hard, and the teachers try to push you and break you down. I hope that's not true. Anyway...glad to meet all of you--hope we can be of some help to each other.

Kelly

Hi Kelly,

You will be fine. Micro is hard. I did make it with a B, but I still don't know how. It will also help you in starting nursing. I am at the end of my second seimester and it is very hard. We are doing Peds and OB. I have a 75% avg and that is what you need to pass. I have one more test and a final. I think Micro taught me how to study and what to study. It is hard, but you can do it. All I can tell you is if your instructor does a "unkown" (that is where you need to identify the bacteria etc) pay attention to the tests. That helped me out. I found I had E. coli and was right from day one. He just wanted me to do more tests to learn. There are many websites to go on. Sorry to say they were all stored on my computer at work and I know longer work there. If you were in PA and were going to my college I would be able to give you all the info.

Just pay close attention to the repeated words the instructor says. Believe me they repeat. Then you can focus on that.

Oh and wash, wash your hands. That stuff is yucky!!! You sure don't need to bring it home. I came home and washed my clothes right away. Never know.

Best of luck. If you need any help let me know. I am off all summer. I need luck to pass this final!!!:crying2:

Enjoy your summer!!

Wendy

Thanks for the advice Wendy, and I'm glad you're doing such a good job! I just took my last final today--my A & P11 exam. I think I did pretty good, but I'll let ya know. It just feels so much better having someone to talk to about the classes. I have about 3 weeks off until I start the summer session, ( a 4-week class of medical micro), but then I go right into the Nursing in August. I went ahead and bought my drug dosage calculation book, and looked over it a little---WOW!!! I know it's gonna take a whole lot of hard work, and prayers, to do well. Here in KY, they take everyone selected, and put them through the LPN first 2 semesters, then give you the choice of taking your boards then, or going on for the RN. I'm just kinda proud to have made it this far...it's been a long road. Thanks again Wendy...and keep in touch plz...Kelly

Kelly,

I did that last summer. Went to micro and right to nursing. You get tired, but you can do it. Dosage calc is easy once you learn the steps. If you need help let me know. Do worry about the dosage calc yet. Worry about micro. You can do it. I took my last class test last night and think I did ok on it in the 80%, but you never know. You think you remember what you picked as an answer then you doubt yourself. I wish we had the choice they give in KY. Here you either go to LPN or go for RN. I took the RN, but sometimes I think I should have went to be an LPN for a while. I am going from accounting to nursing. So you see where my problem is!!

Well my final is Tuesday morning at 9 am. I guess I better get back to what I am sick of doing "Studying".

Wendy

Hi all. I am starting a micro thread for summer 2006.

Thanks Michelle, I've been to that post, but already posted here and met Wendy, and I want to keep in touch with her, and this is easier, since the other thread is much bigger...hehe...

Wendy----Thanks for the offer of help with the calculations; I'm sure I'll take you up on that.;) I have my nursing orientation tomorrow; supposed to last ALL day long too...and I'll have to make it through with a newly diagnosed kidney infection, with possible stones....I feel horrible. Sounds like you did great on your medical micro...way to go girl!!!

Kelly
