Microbiology - Summer 2005

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Just getting the Microbiology thread started for those of us taking it this summer :) Let's introduce ourselves. I'm sure we may recognize each other from the A&P thread and hopefully there will be some new students too!

I'm Jennifer, married with 3 kids (11,6,2). I'm starting the nursing program in August and other than my humanities elective, I'll be ALL DONE with gen. ed. courses. I've been a SAHM for 7 years but am considering a PT summer job to help pay for expenses (mine and DD's - middle school is expensive between cheerleading ($305), flute ($700!!) and the newly mandated uniforms  ). Oh and I have been a mystery shopper for 7 years too which basically helps us get out and do stuff that we otherwise wouldn't be able to afford.

My classes start May 17. I'm taking Micro Tues, Wed, Thurs from 6-9 (lecture from 6-7:20, lab from 7:30-9.) I'm also taking English 102 online. YUCK. I don't want to write papers this summer. We're using Tortoro's book in Micro, BTW.

I really have no idea what to expect for this course. I did very well in A&P 1 and 2 (A :balloons: ) but am feeling a bit burnt out - having only 1 week off between spring and summer semester is not enough. We have the entire week of July 4th off for break, and DH and I are surprising our kids with a week in Disneyworld We can't wait!! I spend way too much time on the DIS boards and planning our trip:p

what happened to the other micro thread we were all posting in????

Thanks Traci, I am excited to be in this adventure at this time in life. I'm organized, dedicated and willing to do whatever it takes to get things done! Last summer I took A&P as intensives (5 1/2 weeks for A&P1 and 5 1/2 weeks for A&PII). I had to go 4 hours a day 4 days a week and study when I wasn't in class. It was so bad at home that my dust bunnies had to make friends with each other!! After 35 years of not going to school I wound up with a 3.7 GPA so that's not bad for someone with less gray matter than the rest of ya'll!!

I'm so happy you started this thread and we can bounce questions off each other as need be.

Best wishes in to everyone in the group. I'm here for anyone that might need me! Is anyone taking Patho in the Fall?

I'm yet another stay at home mom who is taking Micro this summer! :chuckle I have two girls one will be three in august and the other is 9 mo. I'm taking Micro online through CCC online. I'll also be taking Organic Chem at a local college at the same time! :uhoh21: My nursing program starts full time in the fall and I'm having major mommy guilt about it. On the one hand I'm glad I stayed home with my girls as long as I have- but on the other- I'm itching to go back to school and am not cut out for stay at home mom-hood exclusively. My kids are just so little though... It's a really tough call for me.

So glad to be a part of this thread!

Jess, please don't feel guily about not being cut out for SAHM-hood - exclusively. It is a proven fact that being a SAHM is one of the hardest (if not the hardest) jobs around. It is okay! From my personal experience, as long as you have a strong support system, you will be fine.

I wanted to add earlier that I am a "nerd", too. If I had my micro book already, I would be reading it. I am getting my from a friend (Thank God) that loaned it to someone else this previous semester and she hasn't caught up with her yet to get it back. But when I do get it - even though my session doesn't start until 6/13 - I am going to start reading. With an 8 week course and lecture being on-line, I figure it can't hurt to get a jump start on the reading.

Well, welcome again to everyone - the more the merrier - we will get through this together. I know a lot of people (at least at my school) look at this thing as a competition and will not be bothered with study groups or the like - the way I see it is the more support you have, the better. If someone becomes a leech, you tell them so. This is a give and take - just like any other friendship/relationship. I am so glad to have so many wonderful people on the board to share and care with!

I'd love to hear how everyone is juggling motherhood and school!! In our house, nobody has clean clothes and there is no food in the house leading up to my A & P exams. The girls are okay with it, but DH gets a bit upset. He's just used to being spoiled......

This is our house too :imbar: I planned to take this week I have off of school to catch up on housework, but the reality is, I'm relaxing. As a matter of fact, I just got out of bed 30 minutes ago!! Well I was up at 6 to get the kids off to school but I went back to bed at 8am and took a nap. So nice! I am having a yard sale in a few weeks to clear some clutter and hopefully make some spending money for our disney trip. I need to get more organized with dinners and make a menu. But I've been saying that for months now. I'm glad I'm not the only one whose house is being neglected in all this. I have been making a point to spend as much time as possible with my kids and the nice weather is helping in that area a lot. :coollook:

Hi all! I'm Tracy from Wisconsin. I am a medical assistant working part time, and also a married mother of two boys- 5 and 7. Micro is my last pre-req, and I was just informed my wait my be until Jan 2007! The waiting list at my CC is terrible.

I'll be taking it Mon-Fri 8 a.m.-10:30 starting June 13th. Kind of sucks going every day but my kids will be in summer school, so I only have to pay day care to drop them off. I have heard micro is easier than A&P, but I have also heard that my instructor speaks very broken English and is very hard to understand. We'll soon find out! Good Luck to all!

Hey, gals!

I, too, know I should be trying to catch-up on the housework during this short "break," but it's really hard with all the beautiful weather. I just want to spend time with my kids outside in the sunshine!!! So, that's exactly what I'm doing...guilt free. The way I figure it, my kids are going to grow up so quickly, and these precious moments will be long gone. Besides, as soon as I start school in a couple of weeks, there will be no more "guilt free" days. So...dust bunnies and laundry are all continuing to multiply like crazy at my house, but we're all healthy and happy, and that's what really matters, right? :)

Yipee -- it's almost summer!!!

Oh yeah...for those of you who are having a difficult time trying to figure out how to plan meals, budget, etc. -- there is a GREAT thing I discovered several years ago called "once-a-month-cooking." There are several really good books out there about doing this, and it has been an absolute LIFESAVER for me and my family of five. You basically plan out many meals for the upcoming month that your family likes, shop for the groceries, do all the preparation and assembling on one day, and then freeze/label everything. Then, you never have to worry at 5 p.m.-- "what's for dinner?!" You just pull something out each morning to thaw, and add whatever sides you want with your entree' that has been "pre-prepared" (by you) several weeks in advance. It's wonderful -- it takes a little getting used to, but it is WELL worth the effort for busy families such as ours. You can use recipes from a book on freezer cooking, or you can throw in a few of your own family favorites. Either way, it's a great alternative to always running out for fast food all the time -- but it does take a bit of discipline and pre-planning. I go in spurts about doing this -- when I'm really "on the ball" I tend to do it quite a bit, but when I find myself short of time (i.e. mid-semester), I don't. Actually, if I were smart, I'd pre-plan to do all my month's cooking BEFORE the semester begins (uh, like RIGHT NOW! lol), so that I don't end up being so stressed about mealtime, come mid-July.

Oh well. Just a thought I wanted to share...might be the solution for someone else's hectic schedule. I know we are all juggling school and kids and DH's! :)

Good for you Susan! Your children are only young once. Looking back at life I wish that I had taken more time to walk barefoot with the kids, play in the sprinklers, etc. I'm a better Grammy for those life lessons, but I have regrets. I NEVER had dust bunnies when my kids were growing up and I should have!!

I too am a proponent of OAMC. Now it's only my DH & I but when we had children at home I spent 1 Saturday each month making & freezing meals. I have lots of great crockpot recipes too!

I pray that each of us will be great nurses and even better wives, moms, friends, etc.
