Who is Taking Micro this summer? Here is a thread that we can all refer to for support. If you have any links to helpful websites please feel free to add them.
What text book is everyone using? At my school we use 'Microbiology-A Human Perspective'.
There is a lady in my micro class who is 48 so dont worry about it, I myself am 32 and did this ten yrs ago but now going back again. Its tough but if you really want it, you will do it. We have a lab quiz every week in lab, so far we had no actual practicles under the scopes but I'm surely not suggesting it, everything from what I understand is on paper. Major exam #1 is next Wed.
Hi everyone - So glad I found this board! I'm taking an 8 week Micro course this summer along with Med Terms, online. The class started on June 7th & we're using Tortora's book. This summer load is making me crazy, but @ least I won't have time to obsess over getting accepted into the nursing program for fall (should hear by July) Good luck & hang in there!
Hi, I'm taking Microbiology as well. My class started May 30 and will end June 28 I go to class from 1 pm - 4:45 Mon- Thursday. I'm also taking A& P I from 0815 - 1200 Mon- Thursday. I'll start A& P II July 5th. I had my first micro test. I made an "A" but I worked hard for it but my instructor is great. The next test is a openbook test that covers 3-4 chapters. You'd think it was an easy grade but the way the text is written and our required purchased lab notes you easily become confused. The text book we're using is Introduction to Microbiology, 2nd edition by Ingrahamn & Ingraham.
a word of encouragement, it is do..able we can do this :)
took my first test monday 5th and on tuesday took my first lab test so far so good! if i can keep this up i might get an a it will be tough though but because i'm obsessive compulsive i'm gonna do it..
counting down the days until nursing day.... august 14 2006....
Hi everyone, I'm Keisha and I'm also taking Micro this summer. We use Foundations in Microbiology, 5th edition by Kathleen P. Talaro. I'm actually taking it online and we started May 22nd. We have our first test next Friday when we meet for lab. It's a hard class, but interesting. Our teacher is great and she provides excellent notes. I haven't been studying like I should be, but I'm cracking down and will be hitting the books hard starting tomorrow for three hours a day until the test. Well, just wanted to put my two cents in. Good luck to everyone!
my class so far is ok what's not ok though is a couple of students that don't have their books. on the first day of class, one sitting by me asked to borrow my cd from my book to do homework that was given to us that same day, i went ahead and let her take it home, she returned my cd next day and everything was fine until another chick later on sat at the table with us and she started this similar conversation "the book cost too much and that is just ridiculous and i'll not spend money on something i'll just be using once" blah.. blah.. blah..almost the same lines the first girl gave me. i try to understand but i don't get it, i cannot comprehend why someone could be that much of..... and not buy its own book, c'mon i don't have it easy either but i'm sure that if i can do it so can they!, for starters i'm paying myself through school and have never ever gone to a class w/o being ready and sit and hope that someone would let me use their books, this is just too much of..... now i'm expecting next day of class thinking of how am i going to handle this situation! some people really have no clue of the meaning of the word parasites even after being explained in microbiology class!
cyb - you crack me up! i do know exactly what you mean by your posting! personally, there must be other valuable information on the cd for you to learn from! i would not give it over, and just explain you need it, or just say you had to let another friend borrow it. i know two women that share books. they take the same classes, and buy only one book between them - hey that is great, because its an agreement between the two of them. i help them out when i can, but i need the book too!
so how is the class coming along? do you think there is any other class that might have helped you prepare for micro?

We have lab reports due for each lab we do. Also we had just one practical. Our instructor set up various microscopes with specimens already focused in on. Ours was 25 questions, 30 seconds at each station. Some of the questions were identify the specimen. . . Algea, protozoa etc.
There was questions about gram staining, basic and negative staining... why you use oil submerrsion, why you fix a slide?, 4 descriptions of colonies?,idenify the objective len used (40x). The way I studied was from the lab reports. I got a B on it. Good Luck!
