  1. I have been at it for 14 months and can't get a job in a hospital. There is nothing I haven't tried and no place I haven't applied. It has to be over 250 applications to every hospital, LTC, etc. I even know the director of nursing at OSU and they can't help me. Ohio is great palce for education but awful for new grads. If you can move then do it. Best of luck to you.
  2. I will completely agree with the age discrimation is rampant! I know it can never be proven, but I have a hard time believing that a new grad with no experience (and much younger than I) would be better suited for a job when I have more hands on nursing experience. I hope you find a job soon! I know how frustrating and defeating it can be!
  3. As stated prior I graduated in 2010 and been working HARD to find a hospital nursing job (yes, includes SNF, etc) for 13 months with NOTHING to show from it but a lot of rejections. I think it is MUCH easier for an experience hospital nurse to get a job then a new grad with no hospital experience as an RN. I have even been in home health which hospitals deem "not similar" in job experience. I too have a mortgage, etc. and would love to move if the housing market was better. Nursing can be a secure job if in a different state OR have nursing hospital experience. My advice is to make sure you get into a program that lets you work for a hospital for a certain number of hours per week (they pay your tuition) with the promise that after graduation they will have a spot for you. Would like to get the MSN, but owe to much on the BSN. If nursing is your passion, go for it. Just be smart about it now, and go work in a hospital as a patient care assistanct (or whatever they are called there). I worked in the hospital, but they did not pay my tution which was a mistake on my part and I am truly paying that price!
  4. So,a year later after the last post it is obvious things have NOT changed! I have been trying for 13 months to get an Staff RN job with a big fat ZERO! Must have experience as an RN in the hospital, how the heck do you get it if no one takes a chance on hiring you? I think I want my money back on the education! LOL
  5. I work at NCH...that is incorrect. They are hiring..but..only experienced RN in the floor they are hiring for...sorry. I can't even get an RN job there and I have worked there for several years!

Thank You ScottE for the quick response! I do have my BSN. I had to take on another position in the hospital to stay connected in some fashion, but it is not a nursing position.

I am having the SAME PROBLEM!!! I graduated June, 2010 with passing the NCLEX in July, 2010! It doesn't help I am a more 'mature" RN on a second career! I have put in over a hundred applications with a big fat ZERO! I even tried Critical Care Fellowship and could not get in because it was to "competitive". My GPA was fine and I have experience with PICCS, Vent/Trach..etc. I had to take a job as a new grad in Home Health Care - disaster! Nothing like learning all your critical skills on YOUR OWN in someone's home! The hours are endless with having to do post-op care and taking care of regular clients - ends up being a 21hr shift and more with no compensation. What is it about Columbus that you can't get a job?! Who do you have to contract to get a job? I have restructured my resume to bring out current skill level. I do understand your frustration. I have even heard of nurses taking a job at Cleveland Clinic and renting hotel rooms for a few days and then traveling back to Columbus!
  8. Jobs are slim to none in Columbus, Ohio. To many nursing schools the market is saturated!
  9. luvmyguys - There has been many of floating for RN's that I have noticed! In our orientation class there were 20 people that are scheduled to graduate in 2010 too! All we can do is keep trying and hope the construction falls ahead of schedule! I tried for over 6 months to get a job at Children's - it finally paid off!
  10. I had Chummney as my instructor - she was great!! I couldn't take this type of course online. Karrat is another GREAT instructor for the class!!
  11. I just got hired at Children's for Floating PCA. They did have a massive hiring of "nursing students" for PCA/ and floats. The orientation started 12/15/08. They mentioned they do this once or twice a year with nursing students. I think the next round will be in summer. Keep checking the job listings! They mentioned in the interview that there is no nursing shortage at that hospital, even with all the new jobs being added on, they "hope" to employ their PCA's once they have their license and have a great employment record.
  12. I used the saunders review book in place of the HESI. I used the book outline...not so much the questions. I studied my weak points and the unfamiliar material in that book and I used saunders because of this website! I kept reading how everyone said it helped them so I decided it couldnt hurt. im so glad i have this website to refer to. Where is this webiste or book that you are referring to?
  13. Currently attending Otterbein Continuing Studies in the Nursing Program and it is cheaper than Mt. Carmel. They encourage you to get your pre-req done at CSCC (it is a great school and much cheaper), then go to Otterbein for a few more classes and all of your nursing. It is a small, private college and the staff is great! They do have fiancial aid, so as far as the BSN program is the question I would check out Otterbein. They also just built on a brand new nursing department with huge labs and practice labs!
  14. Don't know about pay and work, but Columbus Public Schools only received a "C" in progress - and that was an improvment! I live in the area and put my kid through private schools to keep him out of the CPS system. Please do your research before you decide on schools - their earlier grades seem to be OK depending on where you go.
  15. I can only tell you about a friends experience with the online program. This person had a degree in business, had a 4.0 GPA, and did pretty well on the NET. He got accepted into the online program and he is working his rear end off! This person actually got his first "B", he actually has to put many hours into studying, reading, posting discussions, papers, labs, clinical, etc. This friend has questioned his decision many times, but it is said the first 3 quarter are so hard that they are trying to weed out people. I don't mean to scare you, but you should go into this knowing it is A LOT of work, and working more than 8 hrs a week only makes it worse. I have talked to another person who made it through the first 3 quarters, and this person said it got better after that.
