Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

:welcome: Gonna try to stick this one!!! Heres to a wonderful semester for all us MBers :):welcome:

Ok, So maybe E.coli grown in cooler conditions would have a greater amount of unsaturated fats in its membrane? Does E. coli change the bonding or does it just select more unsaturated(vs saturated) fats from the medium it is growning in?. . . . . Oh Boy, and the chemistry chapter is suppose to be a review. This is going to be a long 12 weeks. We are having our first test next Monday! Ugh! Don't panic.

Ok I have no idea on your question I don't start Micro for another week, however i did notice you and I are using the same texts. So hopefully you will have the answers for me by the time I get to that chapter!

Gee I wish it was the other way around. :p Well, You might want to see how I do on the first test before looking to me for any answers. I ordered the study guild for this text and I hope it is a good one. My instructor is good but she is moving at a train wreck pace but I think it is because she has to. Looking through the chapters there is a LOT of stuff in microbiology and we are covering it all in 12 weeks. . . any way If I can help you I will try.

This question dosen't make sense to me. E. Coli is gram Neg so it has a plasma membrane and plasma membranes are made of phospholipids. These are different than simple lipids (unsat.) they are complex lipids. I crushed this class and we used that book but this question is confusing me. I even searched the web and found nothing on E. Coli membrane fats at different temps. It the critical thinking section right, I say the question is incorrect and the answer is, there are phsopholipids in the outer membrane. If anyone finds anything different post it, I would like to know. We covered what the effects of different temps on different bacteria were, but not that. As far as unsaturated fats they will melt at lower temps, maybe thats what he is trying to get at.

I checked my book, my first comment is 'dang, I'm glad that wasnt part of my assignment".

That said, I did a search in google with the following string "unsaturated lipids in plasma membrane E. coli"

It appears that the increase in heat increases the fluidity of the unsaturated lipids. WARNING: I only reviewed a couple of the articles.

Today was my first day taking Microbiology.

I was half asleep coming from the NOC shift ;-)

Ok, I asked my teacher and she said that E. coli can have one of 2 emzymes that would either change to a double bond in the saturated lipid or remove it and attach a new fatty acid making it a unsaturated lipid. So I guess they will change their membrane make-up depending on the temp to make sure their membrane keeps the same fluidity. At least that is what I think she said. Wow. Now how was I suppose to know that?

That's not fair. That info is not in the text

That is exactly what I thought too. I can't really blame the teacher because the question was written by the author. Now that I asked her about I hope she goes over it in class. I feel good about the other questions. I do have to admit that after all that AP the critical thinking questions are a bit of a challenge. And probably good to work on in case I do make it into a nursing program. I hope I hope I hope.

Did you have to do any of the questions at the end of chapter 2 (chemistry, Tortora)? I am stumped on critical thinking question #3. "What happens to the relative amount of unsaturated lipids in its plasma membrane when E.coli grown at 25c are grown at 37c degrees?" aren't unsaturated lipids fluid at both temps and why would the amount chance? I am missing something.

the relative amount of the unsaturated lipids in the membrane should not change when e.coli are grown at 25 or 37 Celsius because the lipid inside the membrane is as viscous as olive oil which won't get too fluid when warmed or too thick when cooled......the consistency stays the same even though there is a temp difference. However, as far as I know e,coli loooove 37 degree body temp and function best at that temp because their job is to hang out in your large intestine and wait for all that undigested food leaving the small intestine. They are called enteric bacteria. Ecoli do what they love best at 37....attack the undigested food particles from vegetables etc and ferment these which will give you all that nasty gas :lol2: Please check with your instructor on this one ;)

Wow. Sounds interesting. Thanks for that explanation.

Don't know if it's right....I am sure some really smart student/ graduate will set it straight if I am wrong :lol2:

I'm taking micro-bio this semester as well. Very much so excited this is my last semester of prereqs. Does anyone know of any good study websites?
