Learning Thread: Med/Surg
I am still just a RN student but I work as a tech. . I have been wondering if anyone had a great responses to the question, "When will the Doctor get here?" . . . . the responses I am using aren't always well recieved and I end up with a frustrated patient.

Universal coverage for pregnant women and children = 9 days of DOD spending
I totally agree that goverment run health would be horrid. But we all seem to agree there has to be something. But what? I used to work in HR. Image choosing between a good healthcare coverage and your cell phone. The company I worked for had 12 different plans(from $11 a week and up) only 25% of the qualified employees would sign up, rest said that they couldn't afford it or that they would just go to emergencey. But for some reason they could afford their car payments and cell phone bill. For some people healthcare isn't a priority, until they need it. The ones I really feel sorry for is when women during job interveiws ask how long before they can get health insurance. I tell them in 6 mos or after you have work a certain about of hours, whichever comes first. They look really disappointed and say "but my baby is due in 5 months"

Microbiology Spring 2007
That is exactly what I thought too. I can't really blame the teacher because the question was written by the author. Now that I asked her about I hope she goes over it in class. I feel good about the other questions. I do have to admit that after all that AP the critical thinking questions are a bit of a challenge. And probably good to work on in case I do make it into a nursing program. I hope I hope I hope.

Microbiology Spring 2007
Ok, I asked my teacher and she said that E. coli can have one of 2 emzymes that would either change to a double bond in the saturated lipid or remove it and attach a new fatty acid making it a unsaturated lipid. So I guess they will change their membrane make-up depending on the temp to make sure their membrane keeps the same fluidity. At least that is what I think she said. Wow. Now how was I suppose to know that?

Microbiology Spring 2007
Gee I wish it was the other way around. Well, You might want to see how I do on the first test before looking to me for any answers. I ordered the study guild for this text and I hope it is a good one. My instructor is good but she is moving at a train wreck pace but I think it is because she has to. Looking through the chapters there is a LOT of stuff in microbiology and we are covering it all in 12 weeks. . . any way If I can help you I will try.

Microbiology Spring 2007
Ok, So maybe E.coli grown in cooler conditions would have a greater amount of unsaturated fats in its membrane? Does E. coli change the bonding or does it just select more unsaturated(vs saturated) fats from the medium it is growning in?. . . . . Oh Boy, and the chemistry chapter is suppose to be a review. This is going to be a long 12 weeks. We are having our first test next Monday! Ugh! Don't panic.

Microbiology Spring 2007
Did you have to do any of the questions at the end of chapter 2 (chemistry, Tortora)? I am stumped on critical thinking question #3. "What happens to the relative amount of unsaturated lipids in its plasma membrane when E.coli grown at 25c are grown at 37c degrees?" aren't unsaturated lipids fluid at both temps and why would the amount chance? I am missing something.

What anatomy book are you using for Spring 2007?
We are using principles of anatomy & physiology by Tortora & Derrickson. It is HUGE! I am not sure my backpack is designed for this. I might have to breakdown and buy one of those book carriers with wheels.

A&P I Spring 2007 Semster - Welcome!
Hi everyone. I sure would like to join. I am taking both AP1 and Micro. I already got some of the books and I can hardly pick up the AP book! I get a mild panic attack everytime I look through it. There is so much! I can tell right away that this is a class that I never want to get behind in. I am sure I will have lots of questions. Leximast

Chemistry Help
I am guessing because we are starting the acid & base chapter tomorrow but I think you can use the C1V1 = C2V2 equation. So (.250M)(15.62ml) = (.100M)(V2) V2 = 39ml Does that work? I could be way off. Lexie

Chemistry 2006/ 2007 Club***
Hi Miranda, We are covering the same problems in my Chem 101 class. It believe you use C1,V1 = C2,V2 . So C1 = 4.5%, V1 = 300ml and C2 = 35% 4.5% x 300ml = 35% x V2 Divid both sides by 35% to get V2 by itself and V2 is 18.6 ml. So the answer is Take 18.6ml of the 35% HNO3 and add H2O until you have 300ml of solution. That should be correct. Good luck lexie
