Microbiology - Fall 2008

Published

Hi ya'll! Anybody taking Micro this coming fall semester and want to form a study group? I did this for A&P I and II and it helped tremendously! I'm taking it along with Chem 1151 (Survey of Chem). Thanks!

Just curious - does anyone else have to give a presentation over a disease? I was given Hepatitis & Schistosomiasis as my 2 dieseases and I have to prepare a 10 minute power point presentation on them. Been working on this for a few weeks now. You wouldnt think a 10 minute presentation would be such a hassel - but sheesh! I keep finding more and more info and trying to get them organized is such a pain. And wouldnt you know it - there are multiple forms of Hepatitis, so finding the required info on each - it feels like I'm working on 10 diseases instead of just 2.

Thanks - I'm done with my little vent now. :)

I gave a presentation on Cholera, which I had a great time researching. It just so happened that all the students who presented before me presented diseases that weren't particularly yucky, even if they were serious. So before I started my powerpoint presentation, I said, "And now for some explosive diarrhea..." Good thing my prof had a great sense of humor!

That's awesome! I had to do a research paper on MRSA but alas, no presentation. That would have been fun! Ok, ok, so I'm a nerd...:specs:

A few classes ago we were told to go out and swab random things to try to find a sample of staph and then a sample where we thought there would be many organisms growing. I swabbed the ground (dirt) for the multi org one and the guy's gym weight bench for staph. I figured that with all that sweat and boy nastiness (god only knows the last time it was cleaned!) I'd be sure to find something. We got our cultures back last night and my mannitol salt plate was LOADED with S. aureus. You should have seen the guys in our class turn pale! I thought it was ironic that I had just done a paper on it, or at least on it's antibiotic resistant counterpart.

Believe it or not, I found a photo of a special type of bed that is used for cholera patients in countries where cholera is prevalent. The bed has a hole in the middle, and they put a bucket underneath the hole! The poor souls with cholera are too debilitated to even get up and run to the bathroom. That opened a few eyes in the class and made my point about how horrendous cholera can be.

Wow! I owe you so much! :bowingpur I have a Bio. 101 test on Monday that going to have a lot on the Krebs Cycle! Not only have you helped me in advance for Micro. but you've perhaps saved me here in Bio. 101! Thank you! :D

You're welcome! And to thank me, you can pass the information on to some other student when THEY need it before an exam!

Good luck on your test and in Micro next semester!

I just got back my lecture test and got an 85%. It's not as high as I wanted but I still have an A in the class so as long as I continue to do well I'll be fine. We've been doing papers throughout the semester on our microbe. Mine is Legionella pneumophila, aka Legionnaires' Disease. We also have to do a presentation on it. Our teacher said to have fun with it so I'm kind of looking forward to it, even though I normally hate speaking in front of other people. :D

Hey Rachel,

Thanks- it is a lot of work and motivation on my part.

I did applied to several school, but my community college was the 1st one to reject me. The funny part is that I was going to go there as my last resource and they were the ones to slap my face first with a NO LOL- Anyways , I'm still waiting for others school. I'm keeping my confidence level high- If I don't get in, then I would apply again for the Fall- It would make me a stronger candidate since I would be done with all prerequisites donee yeahhhh! But let's pray to go that I can go in the Spring:bowingpur

Congratulations to you!!!!!:yeah: What school are you going to go?
