Men in Nursing

Published

Hi everyone! I just wanted all you woman in nursing, to share your thoughts on men being in the nursing field?

Specializes in Pediatric Critical Care.
My unit has 300 RNs (298 female, 2 male). I work with 30-40 female RNs each shift, plus female RTs and Docs and they see me as a coworker and I see them as coworkers, not male nurse and female nurse. It is truly a non-issue. Would you ask the same question in an accounting message board?

When will these types of threads stop??? :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Guy, I love that profile avatar for you

I think male nurses are fantastic and I wish there were more. I think for a man to choose nursing as a profession speaks volumes about his character and most of the male nurses I've encountered have been awesome.

I don't mean that to be sexist, but I think it says a lot if a man can ignore the stigma, jokes and ridicule that are sure to follow suit.

I just get extremely annoyed when people ask why I didn't want to be a doctor. Gets under my skin every time.

If that's what you're getting from the responses, I think you are engaging in quite a bit of misinterpretation.

OP wasn't talking to me, beings as how I'm a man in the nursing field and never having been asked about my thoughts on men in nursing.

What a stunningly original question! (Where IS that sarcasm font)

Might as well start questioning your career choice and sexuality sooner rather than later.

I quote Adam Carolla, from "The Man Show" a few years back.

"When I'm king, I will eliminate male nurses. The only thing a

man should be nursing is a bottle of scotch."

I'm kidding of course. I was inspired to become a nurse by a

friend of mine actually, who was a guy, and just graduating

nursing school.

Murses unite!! :woot:

In my organization, 12% of our acute care staff nurses are male - ranges from 5% to 20%, depending on the clinical specialty. Lower numbers in ambulatory and post-acute areas. Slightly higher in management roles. I think this is reflective of our geographic areas. Some of our regions benefit from military presence - medics moving into civilian roles. It's all good.
