MEN, dont come into nursing

Nurses Men

Published

I ve worked in hospitals and nursing homes. It sucks. Dont let people here convince you on how great it is. If you are going back to school dont hang onto the mentality of "nursing is a great career there where always be jobs" that was 10 years ago when that was true. do research, there are no nursing jobs. People from overseas come here by the boat and take jobs. The wage is on the down trend, there are more then enough nurses to replace those ready to retire. Please if you are just getting into college pick a less stressful, good paying career choice. PPLEASE research on forums and here from nurses who are not happy with their career. coorprate has destroyed nursing. Dont listen to the few on here who say nursing is so wonderful, i promise you when they run out of paxil and adivan, which is fueling there happiness, they will no longer be posting on these boards on the issues of how great their jobs are.

I'm not sure what part of the country you are posting from but my state has an abundance of good paying nurse jobs. ER jobs in my area start at $50.

Have you considered leaving America and trying something new and exciting? That's what I did. Plus, you get to keep all your earnings if you stay out of the country for 330 days every year. You only have to pay SSI. If you look on the JCAHO website and click on international hospitals with Magnet certification, you can apply for all those hospitals. They love western trained nurses. Most of the hospitals offer free housing.

Other places to go:

--Cleveland Clinic just opened in United Arab Emirates with a beautiful, top-of-the-line facility

--The American Hospital in Dubai

--You could do contractor work as an occupational health nurse in Kuwait, Qatar, Dubai, or Afghanistan. Most of those pay can pay into six digits.

--Go on USAJOBS.org and search for all the foreign locations. They have locations all throughout Europe and elsewhere working on American military bases and embassies.

Just get out there and find what you like man. Nursing is challenging but if it's in the right location can really make up for the bad times.

Specializes in Leadership, Psych, HomeCare, Amb. Care.

Not with an ADN. Seriously limited prospects depending on the market OP lives in.

I will agree that the market is not like it was 10 years ago. Back then there was sign on bonus, now you just get a job. The are more and more nursing programs graduating people in Dec and June, so yeah you may not get a job right away. It takes some work and time, unless you know someone or worked as a tech at the place you are applying to. It can be very frustrating, it took me a few months to find a job. I have only been working for a short time (months) and I enjoy it. I get a feeling of accomplishment when I do something new in nursing, help another nurse out, and when I have a great patient that I helped out during my shift. Nursing is not for everyone, sometimes you do not know until after you take your NCLEX. I enjoy it, there are days I have that I think maybe I should have did engineering. Some days can be tough. It also matter your fellow staff, the shift I usually work I get along with everyone, the other shift I sometime work I cannot stand the Catty, backstabbing, horrible attitude of some of my fellow staff. It is really awful, I keep to myself, but they either dislike me or are mad at the world. I really dread coming in for those shifts and the only thing that gets me by is hoping a float is on the floor. I guess it comes with the job my grad friends tell me, now your working with all women, have fun with the drama they tell me. Maybe a change in floor or place of job is all you need.

With that said... I would think people are smart enough to research all the option before going into nursing especially if it is a career change. There are lucrative fields out there that have jobs other than nursing.

I don't like being a nurse for several different reasons with only one or two being because I'm a dude. With that said I am in FNP school to do more of a practitioner role or teach. I tell people all the time "don't go into the nursing field" men and women a like. There are many pros but many cons...just like any other industry I suppose.

Specializes in Occupational Health/Legal Nurse Consulting.

I believe a lot of it stems from how you entered the field. OP was probably lost in life and thought, eh, I'll be a male nurse and boomed into the field. Most male nurses I know started out in EMS or military and wanted some upward mobility. And OP, you need more experience before you can demonize the nursing field. If your stuck in long term care, get some experience, for God sake get your BSN, and go to a level 1 trauma magnet hospital. Or, leave the field.

I am not in love with my job. As someone else said, it's a job, and if I didn't have to do it I wouldn't. But, for those of us mature enough to recognize a good career when we are in it, as well as reflect on the lower paying, high demanding jobs we have worked in the past, we count ourselves fortunate to be in such an honorable, satisfying, and dare I say well paying field.

Simply put, get off your high horse and stop representing male nurses across the board as if we elected you our murse king. Go flip some burgers if you want a job that is in demand. I always need a good cheeseburger on my way home from earning 300 dollars a day doing something I like and am good at. Peace out, *******.

As a person who considered the option of RN vs. MA Gerontology, I must say that I sometimes wish I had studied nursing. I already had a degree, just needed the nursing credits. However, the only people I know that seem to love being in the nursing profession are the ones that teach nursing at the University. Is it more difficult to get a job nursing as a man? What I wonder, is why does it suck? I mean so you have to clean up after people, and older adults are not the most pleasant people in the world. If I have learned anything in this life, you will only be disappointed if you have expectations. Capacity for each of us is unique, and confirmation is what makes relationships work.

I call it the blue-collar of the white-collar industry. You're educated, a constantly using your mind. But also you were doing physical labor like lifting people, constantly on your feet, and at times feel like a high paid waiter or High paid secretary. You were exposed to every disease under the sun, blood, urine, stool, vomit, and every other kind of excretion. there's also a heavy amount of liability and responsibility. It's not worth the money some days. I like women, but it's not fun after working with them for six years. Although you're instantly best friends with any other male nurse in the hospital. Some good parts about being in a nursing industry is that you'll always have a job, the pay is decent. you are well respected as an individual.I would recommend being a nurse over being a MA. I did the LPN to RN route, if I would do it over again I would choose to be a paramedic first and then an RN.

Do stats show that "men get promoted faster than women?" Certainly doesn't appear to be true where I work. It's the "good 'ole girls club" where I work. They hang out together, shop together, work out together...management defaults to the ladies with any departmental "special projects or promotions."

In guessing OP had a bad experience somewhere. That being said, I dont think you should be discouraging people from the field because of one bad experience.

I love my job, and my first job was a bad experience. The nurse manager at that job actually told me that she was sorry that that was my first experience in nursing, and said the magic words that not all places are like that. She was actually an excellent reference and an integral part in my getting placement in my current job, which I must say I absolutely love and is extremely rewarding, and the salary is definitely comfortable.

Test a different pond before you say the waters too murky to swim.

Would you like me to google that for you or do you prefer anecdotal evidence?
