I ve worked in hospitals and nursing homes. It sucks. Dont let people here convince you on how great it is. If you are going back to school dont hang onto the mentality of "nursing is a great career there where always be jobs" that was 10 years ago when that was true. do research, there are no nursing jobs. People from overseas come here by the boat and take jobs. The wage is on the down trend, there are more then enough nurses to replace those ready to retire. Please if you are just getting into college pick a less stressful, good paying career choice. PPLEASE research on forums and here from nurses who are not happy with their career. coorprate has destroyed nursing. Dont listen to the few on here who say nursing is so wonderful, i promise you when they run out of paxil and adivan, which is fueling there happiness, they will no longer be posting on these boards on the issues of how great their jobs are.

I enjoy my ED most days. It's pretty much like any job in respect that's it's still ..... Work. I'd rather not have to do it at all.
In saying that I have encouraged my children to get good quality high school education so they have a choice to go medicine or IT etc. but NOT nursing ever ever. Thankless job.
I do think that men are promoted faster than women.
And I agree with the foreign nurse ********. Taking jobs from the local born/trained.

So sorry you hate your job, I still love mine, but there's no reason to disagree with you because opinions are just that....... Now, where's my 'ativan'? I'm late for my dose.... Washing it down with some Kool-Aid LOL
Don't demonize those brave souls coming to the US seeking a better life, blame the greedy employers trying to exploit them....
Yes this is true. I have a bit if a love/hate relationship with America. Very capitalist. But he potential is amazing.

Somebody has nothing better to do at 4 am, 5 threads in 13 minutes all saying "Men don't go into nursing". I guess you women can waste your time in nursing. He doesn't care about you.

So sorry you dislike your career so much. While I am not quite as negative, there is a lot that you said that I agree with. While there are still nursing jobs, the positions that are open are usually not desirable ones. The better positions get snapped up by internal candidates, and if they aren't believe me there will be a very good reason nobody internally wanted it. Pay is stagnant at best. I have been with the same facility for almost 20 years and am only making $5.00/hr more than when I started plus benefits have decreased and insurance rates have gone way up. Combine that with cost of living increases and I figure I actually make less now than when I started. I can't comment on the influx of foreign nurses since there are literally none that I have seen in my area, but I do understand that it is a real issue elsewhere.
Now that I have managed to depress myself writing this...maybe I need some paxil and ativan!
PS. Why the title, "MEN, don't come into nursing"? I guess it's ok for us ladies to get suckered into it.

You can't even spell ativan correctly.... yea maybe you should keep your prospects open for another field.
Life is what you make of it. I know some most excellent male nurses and admire them and love working with them!

Maybe you should look for a different job in nursing, sounds like your place of employment isn't a good fit.
I love my job. I have a fantastic quality of life. I make more than a comfortable salary.

Hmm..the jobs are going to people who don't think the work is below them and know how to spell "Ativan", wow - what a shame

I'm tired of posters like this coming in who have had a bad experience with the career and then go and act like it's the same across the board. I'm sorry you think nursing sucks, but many of us love it. I've been surprised at how much I love my job, honestly. My being male has actually made me enjoy it even more, and I'm on no happy pills. ha.
To anyone considering nursing, it's not for everyone, this is true, and apparently the OP was one of these who should not have gone into nursing. But many, many people love the career and find it enjoyable and rewarding, myself being one of them. I had two job offers before I even graduated from school and somewhere in my hospital is always hiring, so it's not true jobs aren't out there. Some areas are harder to find than other, and if you have an attitude like the OP I'm guessing no one wants to hire you anyway, but they are out there.
If you hate your job and/or can't find one, I'm sorry but it's your fault, not the career's.
To the OP, maybe you haven't found the right job yet or it just wasn't meant for you.......or it's going instead to committed nurses who can spell "adivan" correctly. heheh......
