Hey ! I know im super early to make this thread for the MDE program at Columbia for the 2021 start year ? but I was wondering if there are any future nurses out there as eager as me to get started !!
Is everyone going to attend the Admitted Student Virtual Experience? Congrats on the acceptance ?
My stats:
GPA 3.95 and 3.54 for my undergrad schools (business major)
Prereqs: A+ and As
Experiences: Military, First-gen immigrant, Research admin, Hospital volunteer, community volunteer
Accepted into MDE/FNP!
WOW, everyone's background is so amazing! Now I feel like I am not worthy of admission...#impostorsyndrome
Regardless, if I end up going to Columbia I hope I can be friends with all of the amazing future nurses/NP here! And if anyone is looking for housing in NY, hit me up cause I am gonna be needing one too. Does anyone know if the classes are going full virtual for Fall 2021?

Undergrad in political science: 3.5
Masters in nonprofit management/Healthy Policy from Columbia School of International Affairs: 3.5
Prereqs: Nutrition - B, Anatomy I and II - A, Microbiology - A. Finishing up Stats and Psychology in the next six weeks. Nervous about this hurting my chances.
Two years in the Finance Sourcing Dept at NY Presbyterian Hospital.
I spent ten years with Doctors without Borders in the field as an HR/Finance person in various medical programs. Last five years as a Director of Program Finance at an int'l org that raises money for water projects in developing countries.
No direct healthcare experience.
No optional essay. Video essay material seemed fine but my video presenting skills aren't great. Personal statements = who knows?
Volunteering experience is mostly as a foster parent for the past three years - two babies came from the NICU with some initial medical needs. Plus, some work with newly arrived asylum seekers.
References were three professional as its been a long time since I was in school. I'm nervous that will also hurt my application.
I'm not sure how much they want second career students/older students.
Hi, I found your background to be very fascinating. It is incredibly unique and I hope you will get in! I heard that if you don't hear anything yet, you are still being considered for the 2nd round in Feb ??
If you don't mind me asking, what pushes you to pursue nursing? My personal goal in nursing to be involved with public health because I am passionate about education and prevention (due to my nutritional science and research background). This question is just out of pure curiosity and I would love to see economic background being brought to nursing!

Good luck to the folks still waiting, I understand the uneasiness. I am waitlisted at USF, and also accepted at Emory, but I think Columbia’s my top choice. As a trans person who grew up in NYC I’m pretty nervous about living in the south, even Atlanta, LOL. I’ve been living in Denver for years and would like to make my practice out here probably, but I am just so excited to be in an environment like Columbia to get my foundation.
My background: 3.67 BS public health from a private liberal arts school in Utah in 2017, prerequisites all done at community college in Denver, worked healthcare advocacy nonprofits for 3 years, worked as a wilderness first responder on backcountry tips as well during that time period, coordinated a food pantry at a resource center for folks experiencing homelessness for 1.5 years, and have been a unit coordinator at a hospital for 1.5 years. My application was very clear about who I am and the queer-inclusive-holistic view I’m trying to bring to my practice ‘cause I’m not trying to go somewhere that doesn’t accept that and wow I’m still just reeling that they want me lmao!
Congratulations! You’ve had to overcome so many more obstacles in your life than most of us to get here. Bravo!
I am a first-generation Asian-American, also born and raised in NYC. My focus was specifically as a nurse-midwife supporting the underserved and marginalized, esp immigrants and BIPOC. I am eager to meet you!!
I am also awaiting a decision. Congrats to everyone that has been accepted so far, loved reading each of your backgrounds!
Here are my stats:
Undergrad GPA:Lets just say not that great! LOL
MPH GPA: 3.78
Prerequisite: Nutrition B+, Psychology B+ Microbiology A- A&P 1/2 A/A, Biostatistics A
Experience: My background is mainly rooted in public health programs, I have worked at UNICEF, Womens Refugee Commission, Same Sky, Healthright International, Keep a Child Alive etc. I volunteered/researched at a vaccination clinic for 2 months in Kenya.
Essays: Did all of them but the optional essay, I was pretty confident in my timed essay and video essay.
LOR: Two current employers and 1 Graduate Professor
Submitted: 10/11 , Went to the admissions committee 12/22
My main focus is working with BIWOC, children and patient advocacy.
Best of luck to everyone waiting for the 2nd round! This forum has been extremely helpful with updates and encouragement.
Hi Everyone! I received my decision email yesterday and was accepted into the MDE program! I didn't apply for any of the NP track since I'm undecided on what specialty I want to do yet, and I'm leaning towards more neonatal so it didn't make sense for me to apply to the NP track program.
Just curious if any of you are coming from out of state! I'm from California and the idea of moving to a new city is thrilling yet nerve-wracking!
Also, I was wondering if anyone had an idea whether there is a difference between MS vs MSN. I asked a few people at the hospital I work at but no one seems to know the difference. I did some research as well and it says they are comparable credentials and it's based on what is stated on the diploma. Hopefully, someone may have a better insight on this?
Congrats to those who have been accepted and for those still waiting on decisions, I'll be rooting for you!
hey yall! I’m so happy that everyone is sharing stats!! here’s mine ? I wasn’t sure if I posted them here or at another school’s thread already but:
undergrad GPA: 3.22/4; I studied science in engineering but my grades definitely reflect that HAHAH! I have an F and a W on my transcript (from physics classes) but I addressed it in an addendum. I also wrote the optional essay!
prereq grades:
microbio: B+
stats: B
A&P 1, 2, nutrition, lifespan: A
the video essay I literally don’t remember HAHA but I’m pretty sure I was visibly nervous! the timed writing I felt okay about.
I currently work as a medical scribe for an urgent care and my grades did a very nice upturn in my junior and senior year and had some leadership experiences: was an orientation leader and mentor to underclassmen women in STEM. I’m also published in a textbook.
I applied 9/22 and got an email about my application being passed to review on 11/19 and am awaiting a decision!
I hope all of us posting our stats will help future applicants looking back HAHA!! but it looks to me that columbia reviews very holistically so healthcare experience or publications might not really matter to them!
good luck everyone ?
Hello everyone,
I'm still waiting for an admission decision, but since we are all sharing stats. Here are mine.
Program: MDE/DNP Acute Care
Application Submitted: 08/06/2020 - Initial Review: 11/05/2020
Undergraduate GPA: 3.47 - I studied Respiratory Therapy and Labor Relations.
Graduate GPA (MBA): 3.16 - Major life event happened and I failed a class, which was addressed in my addendum.
Prerequisites: A&P 1 - A, A&P II - A-, Microbiology - B+, Nutrition - A, Statistics - A, and Psych - A.
Experience: I've been working in healthcare for 10 years. I started working as a patient registrar and scribe for the first 2 years. For the last 8 years, I have been working as a Respiratory Therapist in the ICU and 3 years as a Manager.
Extracurriculars/Volunteer: Make-A-Wish Foundation, NY Medical Reserve Corps, Former Chair of a Code Blue Committee, Former Chair of a Emergency Disaster Committee.
LORs - 1 from my Director, 1 from a former supervisor and 1 from a nurse practitioner.
Personal Statement/Video Essay - I was pretty transparent on all of the essays. I think I did pretty well on the video essay. The timed writing.. Hmm.. I don't even know what I wrote. LOL! I also completed the optional essay to speak more about why I wanted to become an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
@babyalph2021 Thank you. I've got my fingers crossed. I'm interested in nursing because I've always wanted the medical knowledge of a nurse and I'd like to be closer to patients. When I was traveling/working in the field I felt very close to the ground because I was often living in the same place as the patients. However, once I stopped traveling for work (to have a family) the finance side of things felt too removed. As I'm getting older I thought it was now or never to try for my nursing degree.
