Which job should I take?
Hello all! I was fortunate enough to have been offered jobs in the unit that I want at 2 hospitals, but I am torn about which I should take. Offer A is at a community hospital 25 minutes by drive. I haven't heard the most positive things about the unit, but it is in a state of transition, and I really enjoyed my interview with the new manager leading the changes. Offer B is at the top hospital in my state for this specialty and overall, but is 40 minutes by drive w/o traffic (> 1 hr with). I don't know management well there. From a learning perspective, as a new nurse, Option B makes sense, but, as a parent of 2 young kids, and someone who dislikes driving, I wonder if I that will be the right decision? What are your thoughts? TIA!

How soon to start my first job after graduation?
I was just offered my first job, the one I wanted, while still in accelerated nursing school, graduating 8/26! My only concern is that they suggested that I attend orientation in September. I would prefer to postpone my orientation start date to October at the earliest, as I plan to go on vacation for a week after graduation, and then assumed I’d need a month to study. While they did say I could work while studying, with the caveat being I needed to pass 90 days after my start, I’d simply like more time to breathe and then solely study, frankly. As an aside, I also have two young kids. In your opinion, is it okay to request a later start date? If so, when do you recommend that I start so that I can account for a vacation and the NCLEX? TIA!

Congratulations on your acceptance, and nice to hear from someone else that has children. My kids are 4 and 6. Maybe we'll be able to have play dates while studying? Haha. I live in Westport, and have a some family in Wilton as well. I recognize your name in the FB group (I think?). I'll introduce myself in that group, and get the convo going there!

Yale GEPN 2021
I’m heavily leaning toward Yale for a few reasons: 1. As someone planning to work as a nurse-midwife at a birth center, I spoke with a number of friends who had positive things to say about the clinical experience I’d receive at Yale, whereas Columbia’s DNP program is better for those who want to have a career in research. 2. My friend who has worked at New York-Presbyterian Hospital for 25 years as a Nurse Informaticist (aka she crunches data), and received her PhD at Columbia recently said that NYP surprisingly does not hire so much from Columbia as NYU and Pace, which again, makes me weary about clinicals. 3. Yale is more reasonably priced. 4. I live 30 min away from Yale whereas I’m 2 hours from Columbia, and have 2 kids, so I have to consider them and my family. Also, I would love to build relationships with preceptors in CT. 5. Some of my favorite midwives came from Yale! Every specialty and individual is different, but boy do I hope to get in. That said, I will also attend Columbia’s Admitted Students activities next week, and continue to approach this all with an open mind. I also emailed my interviewer, but didn’t receive a reply. 2 more weeks before the wait is over!

You are an incredibly resilient person. The fact that that you applied and interviewed twice shows a lot of fortitude. Certainly, we are our own worst critics, and should all be kinder to ourselves. Also, may we all get in! Side note, I really thought my interviewer responded well to my questions (more so than the interview). I hope that holds some weight! ?

I feel the same exact ways as you re my interview, application, etc. I had my interview last week, and haven’t been able to sleep much since. I have so much self doubt about my interview, and am just trying to shut off the thoughts at this point. I got accepted into Columbia the same day as my interview, but all I can think about it Yale!

In addition to Columbia, I applied to Fairfield (ABSN, and would follow with a Master’s in midwifery) and Yale (MDE in midwifery). So far, I’ve been accepted to Columbia and Fairfield, and interviewed for Yale yesterday. All three are very different programs - I’m going to have to do some serious thinking this month. I ultimately want to work as a nurse-midwife. Anyone else in a similar situation as mine? If so, what are your thoughts?

Congratulations! You’ve had to overcome so many more obstacles in your life than most of us to get here. Bravo! I am a first-generation Asian-American, also born and raised in NYC. My focus was specifically as a nurse-midwife supporting the underserved and marginalized, esp immigrants and BIPOC. I am eager to meet you!!

Here are my stats - suffice to say, don’t give up, if you feel deterred by your early undergraduate results/experience: -Overall GPA: 3.17 - includes 1.86 during first 2 years (failed out) and 3.74 during last 3 (I had much to make up), resulting in Bachelor’s in Economics and Asian Studies plus 3.96 in prerequisites recently -Work (all in NYC): 5 years in finance; 8 years owning and operating a wellness business; 1.5 years as a birth doula -Prerequisite grades (all in CC): A- in A&P1; A in A&P2, Lifespan, Nutrition, Stats, Microbiology, Gen Psych -Recommendations: 2 professional; 1 academic -Wrote all essays (esp as I needed to explain my first 2 years of undergrad), and was really happy with my timed writing and video essay -Also, I’ve had to homeschool 2 young children (which has been the most challenging element the past 10 months)
